The Baby Boks ended their IRB Junior World Championships 2013 experience on a high note by coming from 21-0 down to beat the New Zealand Baby Blacks 41-34 in a very entertaining match for third place. The Saffas played 5, won 4 and lost just 1 in the last minute at this year’s tournament in France. Judging by the quality of today’s performance the team had it in them to be the overall winners.
In the final England fought back from 15-3 down at halftime to beat Wales 23-15 and clinch the JWC title for 2013. It was fourth time lucky for England who had lost to New Zealand in three previous finals. The England team almost didn’t qualify for the semi-finals after they lost a pool match to South Africa. It has been a good year for England under-20 rugby. Earlier this year, they also beat Wales to win the under-20 Six Nations title.
Walsh flyhalf Sam Davies, the son of former international centre Nigel Davies, saw off the challenges of Jack Clifford (England) and Ardie Savea (New Zealand) to be named IRB Junior Player of the year. He is the first Welshman since Gavin Henson in 2001, to win an IRB Junior Player award.

Some wonderful play by both teams. First the outstanding Savea chases a kick (and hurts his ankle in the process). His attempts to regain possession are thwarted by the equally brilliant Cheslin Kolbe. Kolbe collects the ball on the bounce, evades Savea, attacks left and kicks ahead with his left foot. All classy stuff by the SA fullback. |
