Kearsney vs Maritzburg College

Kearsney ‘s last rugby match of 2013 is a rescheduled home game against Maritzburg College at 14:45 this afternoon. It’s an opportunity for the One-Stripes to end a good season on a high note and simultaneously increase there winning streak over College to a record of three. The team will be without their well-known Du Preez twins Daniel and Jean-Luc who have both made a huge contribution to Kearsney 1st XV rugby over the past three seasons and will sadly miss out on well deserved heroes send offs from their peers and supporters today. It still remains a very competent Maroon pack with Bevan Jackson and young Jesse Rich earning promotion, to be part of a unit that scrums, lineouts and attends rucks very well. The Kearsney backline will be looked to to up their game and produce a more decisive performance than they did against Hilton.

Kearsney achieved early season success without the Du Preezs and they will hope for more of the same against a College team bound to play like demons possessed in order to restore pride hurt after a humiliating home defeat at the hands of Westville over the weekend. The Red,Black,White are however also  minus key players in the backline where KZN representatives Marcel Coetzee, Banele Ngwenya and Lindo Ncgobo have all been ruled out. For College there is expected to be no shortage of passion but they need to back this one up with sound basics and more specifically first time tackling if they are to cause an upset.

The interesting head-to-head battles today include the frontrow particularly Tijde Visser taking on Juice Gumede, at fullback with the contrasting styles of the speedy Chris Lines and the powerful Kelvin Elder and probably the most eagerly anticipated one of them all, Ayron Schramm versus Daryn Goodson, two highly rated no.8’s.

@Grasshopper: Yip, it’s about running a business and producing a product, like true capitalism the best rise to the top. I don’t think it’s necessary for it to be transparent, it’s no business of any other school to know what’s going on on a competitors balance sheet.

If you’ve got super wealthy Old Boys, like Ivan Clarke, who can make massive financial contributions, it means you producing a successful product, right?

@WBHS Griffon: yep, exactly what other schools have too. The new Glenwood pavilion was funded by one old boy. What schools do with their money is up to them. I just think bursaries and scholarships should be transparent for all to see. It’s like an arms race between the schools now which is why relationships are tense….

@Grasshopper: Well lets not get carried away again and say every kid a bursary. It’s a testament to having a brilliant Headmaster and a thriving trust fund that parents and Old Boys are willing to contribute to. In business terms that’s what happens when you produce a great product, right?

@Griffonfly: It’s not that schools are offering scholarships and bursaries, it’s the number of them. No wonder Westville are improving so much at sport, 70 no matter what the % is crazy. Anyway, I think it’s fair at grade 8 level, completely open to schools so may the best school attract the best sportsman. These sportsman will have a few offers, so in the end it’s the parents choice….

@Horsefly and Grasshopper. Why are then are you both surprised at the numbers if all schools are doing it?

WBHS is being identified as the only one doing this. ALL schools do it. There are some schools with half their junior A teams coming from other provinces. It is good for KZN school rugby. To be the best you need to play the best.

@Griffonfly: Same with Glenwood, not all 40 are FULL scholarships or bursaries. Again, no one really knows who is funding what as it’s all behind closed doors. I for one know of a few Old Boys at schools helping previously disadvantaged kids, some have even adopted a few. I remember Lucky Hadebe an amazing runner was hosted by Helen Lucre, who I think paid his school fees. He probably still has the 800m and 1500m records at Glenwood…

Yep that’s true, but the fact that College ITSELF only offers 9 is astonishing and shows how confident they are of their intakes every year.

I think Glenwood and DHS have about 35 a year under them and WBHS apparently about 70.

interesting to see 2 KZN U13A players and one KZN U13B player there including the tall lock Reece Zeelie.

also happy to see hearnot toooo many DPHS are making their way to Maritzburg or the Midlands  just need to see if they’ve decided on Bothas hill, the ‘leafy’ suburbs of WBHS or decided to stay closer to home

@Gungets Tuft: I haven’t seen last night’s game but this is basically how the maul law works.

    1. A maul is formed when the ball carrier is held by an opposition player AND a team mate. So there needs to be 3 players: the ball carrier and a player from each team.

    2. If this ceases to be the case, it does not cease to be a maul. If the defenders disengage from the maul, the attackers can maul all the way to the try line unopposed.

    3. The ball carrier must be the first player to make contact with the opposition. If the opposition then disengage and re-engage – the ball carrier does not have to be in the front.

    4. If the attackers in the mail can split and re-engage with the opposition provided the continue on the same running line.

    5. If they split and move into a new channel (new direction) and re-engage with the opposition – this is considered obstruction. We call it “Changing Lanes” in referee-speak. They have to consciously move in a new direction in a ‘new move’ for it to be considered so.

    6. If the ball carrier disengages – the maul is over. If he re-engages behind the maul it is obstruction because it is considered a new maul.

    7. A collapsed maul is not a tackle. There is no obligation on anyone to ‘roll away’. If the ball is not immediately available to play when this happens – we blow it as a scrum, use it or lose it for the put in.

Have a good week folks. I’m off on holiday.

@Grasshopper: Very sad for Reece-Edwards if that is the case. But if so, why bring in a centre for a scrum half. Surely they would need cover at scrum half? But good for Brad Ellse. He should have been in the team in the first place. If his discipline was the issue in the first place, what has changed in a matter of weeks?

@Westers: You can’t counter it at all if 1/2 the team has broken away and is clearing out the defence. At least 1 try was just blatent obstruction (twice in the one drive to the line) and three or four others were obstruction when the pack split up and reformed.

I will welcome comment from the Refs among us, but certainly my opinion.

@Westers: thanks Westers, I too think the Sharks need to be playing the youngsters like Fisher, Zeilanga etc ahead of Butch and Joubert. Look at James O Connor given his chance really young and now he is a world class veteran in his early 20’s. I actually think Zeilanga should be the Sharks starting flyhalf with Lambie at 15, but that’s me. Zeilanga plays like Johnny Wilkinson, solid at everything. I cannot believe last year they picked Pollard over him. A schoolboy over a player with 2 years Currie Cup experience. Fisher should have been in the U20 side now, what a difference he would have made. Hopefully John Smit holds onto these guys before the move off to greener pastures. Someone like Franna Kleynheins will move if they keep on bringing in loan flanks from the Lions. I would also like to see Whiteley back home playing Sharks….

@Grasshopper: Got to give Glenwood credit in this department. I think Cooper has been one of the best and most consistent players for the Sharks this year. Always gives 200%. Played Burden right out of the team. Adendorff was also great for the U20s last year.
I had not seen much of Zeilinga before this season. Have watched a few of the VC games on TV this year and have been really impressed. I hope he gets some decent game time tonight. He should be playing, not Butch. The Sharks need to give guys like him as much exposure as possible.

@WBHS Griffon: as I said at least 5x Dale Chadwick players and quite a few overseas. Warren Whiteley captained the Lions to Currie Cup win, Kyle had a good season at hooker for the Sharks, Franna & Fred Zeilanga have starred for the Sharks in the Currie Cup, Zeilanga getting a crazy number of points. Shaun Adendorff was one of the stars in SA U20 win last year and in the Bulls U21 squad, was also invited to SA Sevens. Warren played SA Sevens this year. The question is where are our last SA Schools players? Jayden Hill, Ricky Schnetler and Shaun Malton? I know Malton played recently for the Barbarians recently and for a county in the UK. The other 2, not sure?

@WBHS Griffon: yep the majority have joined the Bulls crazy recruitment programme where they have up to 4 SA schools centers and 2 of them on the bench. Many many kids having made that move have got lost in the system, maybe being away from home did not help. The % of provincial schools players making it higher is very very small. I mean what happened to Chris Micklewood? Same can be said for Arlow and Pearson. Plenty stars at school don’t make it. Kyle Cooper didn’t even make KZN schools…..

we will take an unbeaten season locally and 1 loss the entire season. This year has ben very interesting to say the least. The weather has not played ball with the cancellation of the Westville clash which would have settled the score as to who is number 1 this year. Obviously I think that we would have done one over them with a full strength side but that is my opinion. It is now down to the brainstrust to get their teams ready for the new season . Club rugby will be in full swing in a couple of weeks and Collegians are going to be the side to beat.
Hopefully the other clubs have done their homework and come out firing. We need all sides to be competitive to make it an interesting year.

Great to see so many Westville Old Boys coming through at the Sharks. 1 Starter & 4 on the bench!

15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Louis Ludik, 12 Heimar Williams, 11 Sean Robinson, 10 Butch James, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Tera Mtembu, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Keegan Daniel, 5 Jandre Marais, 4 Edwin Hewitt, 3 Wiehahn Herbst, 2 Kyle Cooper, 1 Dale Chadwick
Subs: 16 Monde Hadebe, 17 Allan Dell, 18 Brynard Stander, 19 Khaya Majola, 20 Cobus Reinach, 21 Fred Zeilinga, 22 Tyler Fisher

However, this makes no sense as we are hardly getting any KZN Schools representation each year, roughly the same as DHS with one or two players, yet we seem to be producing some fine young talent that come through at senior provincial level, whereas other schools are getting 5+ KZN schools representatives a year on a regular basis, yet most of those players never seem to really get anywhere at senior provincial level and most of those careers pretty much end straight out of school, can anyone explain this?

@ Greenblooded- Grassy had already mentioned Martin and Anderson and so the core of the backline is looking good with Buthelezi at FB, Pieters on the wing, Anderson at centre and Braithwaite at flyhalf. At the moment the only player from U16A would be Stoltz at tighthead . I think Thomas plays loosehead. The great thing about SBR is that gain 2 inches and 10 kgs and suddenly an U16 player can come from nowhere. 2 U16B players from last year went to 1sts jumping their more vaunted team mates.( Haystek and Braithwaite) and have done really well. The U16A have a lot of players in the mix( 13 to final trials) that need to take the next step up. Have ability though. They with a few B team players have been included in the stayers squad ( Ist to 3rds). As you cancelled the fixture on Dixon’s it must revert back to Bowdens to restore the order of things.

Well done KC on a well deserved win and a great season. Let’s call it that KC are the top KZN team for 2013 and leave it at that. I think it is pointless to try and over-analyse the season on point differences, what could have been , should have been, would have been etc. After all, if one cannot just enjoy SBR for the sheer entertainment value, why bother. I was at Goldstones when GW played MC on reunion day, and that game says it all. I am not saying that this game makes these two schools the greatest or most deserving etc. I am saying this makes SBR more special than any other format and is the reason why many of us will still pop into the local schools to watch any game of rugby. Long live SBR.

Anyway looking forward to next season and judging by the performance of the SA U 20 some of our current schoolboy players will fit in very easilly to that structure assuming of course that we can get the “old school tie ” mentality out of the selection process and just choose the form players ! How about we ban soccer at school level and play two terms of rugby as I dont know what I am going to do on Saturday afternoons now !

It was an entertaining and physical game of rugby yesterday.
I thought that Kearsney’s defence was outstanding as College was prepared to attack from anywhere in the second half.
Tedder is amazing IMHO. In a game like yesterday, he was the difference between the 2 sides. His first half try was individual brilliance as well as his drop kick in the second half – 10 points in a tight encounter is enough to swing it.
Well done Kearsney on an excellent season.
Well done to College in showing great character during this challenging season. Good luck for your 3 tough fixtures next term!

    2) Percy Mgadi – prop/hooker
    3) Kenny Van Niekerk – prop
    4) Kevin Du Randt – lock
    5) Jaco Coetzee – No8
    6) Kwazi Khanyile – scrumhalf
    7) Curtis Jonas – flyhalf
    8) Morne Joubert – fullback/centre/wing
    9) Ruben Fouche – fullback/wing
    10) Vidima? lock/No8 – not sure if in grade 11, but will be Under19…

Add the likes of Chris Bredell, the speedster……and a few more in the 2nd’s, 3rd’s and 4th’s and the side looks healthy with a good spine of experience…Lock looks light again though….errr

All the speculation as to who was missing from the College team. It does not make a difference as you have to play with what you have got. The boys now seem over the virus except for Tharratt who had to leave the field early in the Westville game with chest problems. Yesterday College were without Ngewnya (CW), Ngobo (Academy), Coetzee (CW), Zuma (CW- Nrmally seconds though), Mazwi (Academy)came on briefly and Tharratt. 6 injuries. College played 9 grade 11’s in the match.

Congratulations to Westville too, must be one of their best seasons over the past decade. Not having played Glenwood and Kearsney spoils it a little. Seems Westville will be rebuilding too with only Jordan Martin & Juan Anderson back, unless I missed someone. Westville full season results would be interesting too….

Congratulation to Kearsney for a great season, can anybody put up their full results! Looking at their squad, 2014 is going to be a rebuilding year. Looks like only Langa Hlongwane, Chris Lines, Tristan Tedder and Tjide Visser are back. Tedder may have to choose a sport to focus on in matric, cricket probably being the winner. Michaelhouse in 2012 and Kearsney in 2013 have proven that putting faith in the boys who have worked their way up the ranks and been at the school from the beginning is the way to build a team. Bringing new players in later on just disrupts the team balance and gives no confidence to the boys who have been there from the beginning…..

Both WBHS and Kearsney had great seasons, but what gives Kearsney the edge is that victory over Glenwood. The Glenwood side also had a good season and provided spectators with 2 great games, one against Kearsney and one against College. College, Westville and Glenwood should have good 1st sides next year.

Not only do they play great rugby , they have an old school attitude towards there opponents , whereby they always show respect to the opposing schools war cries , their band is brilliant , their players are very gracious in defeat and humble in victory ……you guys at Westville could learn a thing or two from them …maybe remove your arrogant swagger and learn some rugby etiquette , it will do you some good my boet !!!

@GreenBlooded: Yes, he is currently the u15 coach. I dont know how the coaching structure works but i hope he stays at that age group for a while yet. Agreed, a most respected young man. The stability and reassurance you talk about will come, the move from 2nd form to 3rd form has a lot to do with that. Suddenly in 3rd form you have a few small privileges which counts for something, 2nd form you are told all year your only privilege is to be at this school!

@oldschool: Nice post and thanks for your complimentary words about Glenwood. The best 2 matches I’ve seen this season involve the 3 schools you mention: Glenwood Kearsney and Glenwood College – the latter pegged as the best schoolboy match I have ever had the pleasure of watching (Got the entire thing delivered to me on flash-disk yesterday   ) Will be having a booga sometime this weekend – an no doubt wearing out the rewind button on ‘that’ tackle. Watching the U14A game yesterday, Kearsney will have a few exciting years ahead with this bunch of youngsters. Well done to College too for showing their true colours yesterday – things are coming together nicely. A match that either team could have won on the day. Bounce of the ball stuff.

@Lammonds: Is the ‘exciting young coach’ the current coach? If so then College are in for a great year. And a nicer guy you will not meet. Look forward to watching this group grow into a formidable outfit. The raw talent is there. What they need is stability in the team environment and reassurance in themselves next year.

A quick summary on yesterdays game.

MC came to play as expected from a school with this heritage. KC team less the Dupreez,s and MC less 3.

The effects of a busy season could be seen. The class of KC was the difference on the day, excellent defence and moments of brilliance. As blogged previously KC being the best this year in KZN were never going to have an easy game and this was visible on the day.

In my opinion Tedder was the man of the match and the Goodsen/Schramm match up was not a match up, Schramm was superior in all aspects albeit his visable fatigue and was instrimental in 2 of KC tries. The player who did impress with a solid performance from MC was no. 7 Le Roux. Well done to MC for bouncing back from Saturday as was expected!
Excellent season KC you all know your pedigree, that is the entire squad!

Well done to College yesterday, good to hear some fight being shown…would have expected nothing less!
Massive result for the u 14`s, look forward to see how this group gets on next year. I beleive there is an exiting young coach waiting for them at u 15 level, sticking to the good old College formula of forward domination.

On a seperate note, will someone please chop my w…y off with a spoon if there is ever an `official` ranking system for 2nds, u 16a,b,c, u 15 a,b,c,etc, etc!!! we simply dont need to know who has the best u 14 d side in the province, just let the kids go out and enjoy their rugby…

Great season Kearsney ….the highlights for me are the Glenwood and College victories , as these 2 schools are in my opinion the 2 best rugby schools in KZN , not only in the rugby that they play but more importantly in the manner which they approach the game and the sheer commitment that their boys bring to each match……
It is an end of an era for this Kearsney group of lads , it has been a pleasure watching some great rugby over the last few years !!!
Also , must add that many bloggers have expressed their respect to this side and kearsney , so shot for that .
I hope to see Kearsney competitive in the years to come as I am sure they will be , and looking forward to the resurgence of College over the next few years at first team level , also always look forward to the Glenwood team as the effort that Gwood put into their rugby is brilliant to see …….

@ Gungets- sorry my intention is not to use College as a club but if the shoe fits you have to wear it. This is also not about who has the porkiest chop ( I am comfortable in that regard  ) but to deal with the absolute kak( you see Ploegie I listen) that is put on here. I hope comments about lack of preparation/sickness are now properly put to bed by reference to my question to McCulley. Even my son laughed and said that it was not the Ebola virus and they had a good 2 week lay-up. In the meantime Westville had lost 2 players to injury and others were in recovery.

@Gungets Tuft: Minor correction: Glenwood and Kearsney DID play – at the beginning of the season on Stott. It was an epic encounter which Kearsney won by 1 (or 2?) points in a match that either team could have won on the day. The vital matches that did not take place were Kearsney vs Westville and Glenwood vs Westville. My opinion FWIW: I agree with RBugger (and no doubt many KC supporters) that they are the KZN top team this year.

@star: Just as long as it is clear – none of these arguments are coming from College. College don’t make, don’t need excuses. The scoreboard is what it is.

Must confess to getting a little bit bored of College being used as the blunt instrument in this argument. There is no linear relationship between matches. None, it is the fundamental (and FATAL) weakness in any ranking system outside of a league where everyone plays against each other. Glenwood and Kearsney did not play. There is one FACT. Rationalise and hypothesise till the cows come home, there is no way to reach a conclusion.

I suggest that each of Glenwood, Kearsney and Westville approach their respective reporters and just write it up, publish it, move on. If you think you are going to reach agreement on whose chop is porkiest you are going to be disappointed.

College, after a disappointing season, will settle for a position behind Hilton and take heart from solid performances against Glenwood and Kearsney. We have our bruises from playing rugby, we do not need any from being used by Westville as a club to beat Glenwood and KC.

End of rant, buy a donkey (sorry Ploeg – it’s phonetic – and genetic – cannae help myself   )

@ McCulleys- I can’t believe you have dragged me back into the war zone after I was graciously going to accept defeat. You want to know my true colors -well here they are.
    1) I don’t take S….T
    2) I present cold facts and ask simple questions
    3) Flexibility is my middle name.- look I even reduced the spread down from 40 to 10 and still am drinking free tonight.

With regard to point 2 allow me demonstrate.
A lot has been made of the sickness and lack of preparation for the performance of College and to take the gloss off the Westville victory. If this were true then surely this would have also affected the performance of the other 6 open teams who were subject to the same conditions,However they were the stars of the show winning all their matches bar the 3rds( Westville’s unbeaten team) by one point. Simple answer please.
Cold fact( I watched searching for Sugarman last night  )
In the 7 matches Westville had in common with KC , KC had a 100 % home ground advantage as opposed to Westville’s 43 % . Big tick in the argument for Westville.

My original 40 point margin requirement was to make some bloggers eat humble pie after they derided Westville ( please refer to blog on KZN Tier 1 team please stand up) and I will not make apologies for that.
You yourself have called it a no brainer. I suppose its was also a no brainer that GW would beat GC and Westville would lose or win marginally on Goldstones- Not. Part of my argument has also been that KC have not won on Bowdens since at least 2003. Can someone give me the results for said year and 2001?

@Westers: Touchë. My issue was somewhat different, was heading for a rather costly little “problem” – between R100K and R250K (like towing a Lambo, gnome sane??), needed attention. The lightie understood :-?

The fly-half channel was exploited properly by Westville, it’s a problem that they know about, fixing it is a little more difficult. Work in progress, some youngsters working hard, so I have faith.

Drew their match 1:1 – he played against a few ex-team mates from DPHS so enjoyed that as well.

Well done Kearsney on probably the best season the school has ever had. It was great to see that you boys could dig deep when needed to and the humility you showed on and off the pitch was for me the true sign of champions. Well done. I would guess that this side conceded the least number of tries against it than any other kzn side which is true testament to its defence structures and determination. Just like yesterday without the two doops the boys stood up up against a spirited college side who gave it there all. Long live school boy rugby .

We have wealthy sugar farmer kids, a whole mix of areas so talking about all Glenwood kids coming from the rough harbour area is rubbish. It takes two to tango and we are certainly not going to be dictated to by Glenwood and let them have the upper hand regarding fixtures etc, and I’m sure it’s visa versa for them. @WBHS Griffon: How about everyone stops using College as their blunt instrument. Westville get two log points for the College match, no bonus points for artistic impression. Final log is

    Kearsney 13
    Westville 12
    Glenwood 11
    Hilton 10
    College 6
Then the rest – I think I have the numbers right.

Mr Griffon, suggest you start putting some pressure on the leadership at Westville to resolve issues such as those with Glenwood. It matters little who started it, if the Trevor’s are 1/2 the leaders everyone says they are then they would be sitting over a beer and sorting it out. Then this all goes away.

In the meantime, well done Kearsney, not only on the win and the season, but on the way the school has done the business over the last few years.

Well done Westville, that’s a damn fine season. Back it up with some management diplomacy and you have a formula for success. It’s all that is missing. Glenwood, same comments. It’s not good for the province if one of the powerhouses is under a cloud. Time for all the Old Boys to step up.

..and we gave College 50 points, that’s going to put a serious spanner in the works for no.1 in KZN now. After recent performances Westville would probably have to just edge it although the two sides are very lose this season. Glenwood would have to slip below College after the loss to Campbell and with Kearsney narrowly beating College.

Well I gave my brother in law ( the vice captain in 1981) a 10 point spread and so will be drinking at Waxy’s tomorrow on the Kearsney account.
I think congratulations to the Kearsney 1st team for a great season and to College for having the number 1 2nds, U16A and U15A in KZN. Also the U14A must have showed great character today.

I thought Schramm looked a little jaded after a busy season although he came alive in the second half, but was well marked. Goes to show what a difference the Du Preez make, drawing defenders and creating opportunities for the likes of Schramm. I agree with Greenblooded, the contest between Schramm and Goodsen was a bit of a non event, and for next season my money would be on the grade 11 8th man from Glenwood, physically more imposing than Goodsen. I thought the College 7, Le Roux had a better first half than Goodsen. Tedder, for a light player, was cracker, brilliant in defense, great with ball in hand and tactical kicking good. Haven’t, didn’t and don’t get the Reece Edwards factor, I thought the college 9 was better on the day and out played Reece. Better pass, more physical, better on defense. Both 15’s were great with Lines only getting involved in the game and exerting his influence late in the second half.

Great game – exciting right up to the end. College had 2 scoring opportunities in the last 5 minutes. They set up camp twice on the Kearsney line but outstanding defence by Kearsney kept them out. Very nice to see College back to playing rugby after their non-arrival at the weekend – committed and gutsy stuff from all of them. Kearsney – quality side. No 1 in KZN for sure. My little Schramm / Goodson sideshow – I’d call it a draw today. I thought both of them were a little quiet by their normal standards. Tedder – what a talent. Superb. College player of the day today – Slade Stuart who played in the 2nd team and the last quarter of the 1st. Jobbed like a trojan and made all sorts of magic. He will sleep well tonight. Well done to both teams. Best site meeting I’ve had in a while……..

Eish Reece-Edwards seems to have picked up a bad injury as well today. I hope it’s not nearly as bad as it looked by the way he had to be helped off.

@RBugger: Agreed. I think that Chris Lines also added a huge amount to the team. While not being regarded as superstars, the centres were trojans and delivered week after week with great defence and sniping attacks.

If you consider KC’s results this year excluding the Paarl Gim game, I think the team conceded only 3-4 tries in total. That is an insane record.

@TheGoose: For sure, this could well be the best team KC has produced. In terms of standout players, there is no doubt.

They have had a brilliant season and I only wish they could have played Gim with all players being fit and available. This is not to try and make some sort of excuse, as Gim were brilliant, but I really feel the team has come on in leaps and bounds and would have been fantastic to see the Doops fit and healthy against Gim.

Other than the Gim result, which although a big score the boys did very well in the first half and should have been leading, the rest of the games they showed great maturity, power and skill.

All the boys in this team deserve a big mention as they have been outstanding!!!

I would like to make mention of number 8, Schramm who I felt was a real warrior and although carrying injuries, took up the Doops role in their abscence. To me, he has been a standout player all season and I look forward to what he has to offer at CW.

Well done to Reece-Edwards who captained and led the team with great distinction through-out the year. Also to the twins, what a comeback!!! It was also great to see the support they showed to their team, always happy and smiling at the success of KC.

Looking forward to seeing the brilliant Tedder lead a new era next season

@RBugger: There is also the debate on which will be classed as Kearsney’s best 1st Team ever. I think that this year’s team will be the one. Here is an extract of the history of Kearsney Rugby….

‘There is some debate as to which was the best team to have represented the College during the last sixty six years. The record shows that the 1944 side, led by John Davey, played 12 games, won 10 and lost 2, giving an 83,3% success rate. In this record their claim to have been the best School side was that they beat every school they played. Because the small number of schools in those early days it was common to play some schools twice. They beat Hilton, Michaelhouse, St Charles (twice), St Henry’s (twice), Glenwood (twice), College and D.H.S, but lost to College 5-6 and D.H.S 5-12 in their return fixtures. Three other sides had a better success record. Eric Ngoie team in 2005 played 19 games, winning 17 losing to Westville (7-13) and drawing with Glenwood (6-6). Jeremy Nel’s team in 1987 played 19 games winning 16 but losing to College (10-20) and drawing with Hilton (6-6) and Westville (13-13).

Matt Stevens side in 2001 played 18 games won 15 and lost to K.E.S(13-18 ) and College (15-25) and drew with Southland N.Z. (16-16).The 1981 side of which David Polkinghorne was the captain had an equally successful record playing 18 winning 15, losing 2 against College(0-6) and Westville(6-18) and drawing with D.H.S.(9-9). John Davey’s 1944 side had three players selected for Natal Schools, Trevor Calder, loose head front rank, Harry Newton Walker who was later to become the School’s first Springbok, played both front rank and lock and Norman Theunissen on the wing. Norman played on the wing with great distinction for Natal for many years. Eight members of the team were awarded Honours, the most ever awarded in one year. Only 15 players represented the School and all were awarded team colours

Eric Ngoie’s side had three players and Matt Stevens’ five players selected to represent Kwa-Zulu
Natal. Matt Stevens played in the S.A. team which competed in the Under 19 World Cup. Jeremy
Nel’s side had two players in the Natal School’s team. David Polkinghorne’s side had three Natal
Schools representatives. One could argue for many hours as to which has been the school’s most
    successful team.’

Well done KC – Was always going to be a tough match after College lost so badly on the weekend.

Again, a win without the Doops just shows the depth that KC have. Also, a big well done to College on running KC so close on Stott – wish I could have seen the game!

Can we all now agree that KC are number 1 in KZN :-D

@beet: Agreed. JL did look like he was nursing his knee at the Hilton game and then must have aggravated it in Middelburg.

Would be interesting to see the decisions made to replace them if either weren’t ready for CW. Maseko and Goodson may well get their shot in the Academy side.

@TheGoose: Yes, their injuries come at a bda time. Dan is just a hamstring niggle, but JL has a bad knee and he must be careful – against Hilton he was limping badly… As Beet rightly said, this is only SBR and must be taken into context.

@TheGoose: There is so little time til Craven Week. The boys and parents must also consider their long term futures. It’s pointless playing injured, damaging bodies further and as a result having long term consequences that prevent progress in rugby after school.

The Doops have been to 2 CWs, made SA Schools and have contracts for rugby after school. They have nothing left to prove this year really but they stand to lose much going forward if they are not cautious.
