The Tedder Express

MISSION: To find a schoolboy that excels at school level cricket and rugby. Answer: Tristan Tedder!!  Tristan Tedder is a Kearsney College pupil who enjoys playing sports. He is multi talented and is capable of playing any sport.

TristanThis was proven during his primary school career where he made the 1st XI for cricket and 1st XV for rugby when he was only in Grade 6. Tristan also played hockey, soccer, swimming and won every race in Athletics. He was rewarded for his efforts when he made KZN U13 for Rugby, Cricket and Hockey. He currently has a Kookaburra cricket sponsorship.

It didn’t end in primary school as Tristan went on to make then KZN U15 cricket side and was voted as the KZN cricketer of the year  in 2011. Unfortunately Tristan could not go to the Grant Khomo trials as he was in England with the Kearsney cricket side.

2012 also proved to be a good year for Tristan as he was chosen to be the 1st XV flyhalf when he was only in Grade 10. On the cricket field Tristan performed incredibly well and was selected for the KZN  U17 cricket side. He was the only player to make the KZN CUBS from the KZN U17 Coastal team.

However Tristan’s greatest achievement was his selection for the KZN Craven Week team, and he has proven that dreams can become reality with consistent hard work and enthusiasm.  The only thing left now for Tristan and his teammates is to beat Hilton on Saturday. The setting is perfect as it will be Kearsney Old Boys Day. Tristan & Co will have to be at their best tomorrow if they are to prevent Hilton from getting their second victory in two years against the lads from Botha’s Hill.

Some of Tristan’s achievements.

I don’t know. I believe College are missing a few first choice players (5 I think), but not sure if it is injury or illness – among them 3 CW and 2 Academy. Have heard Kearsney are missing players too (the Doops are apparently out?).

Take the time off – I am certain that the 30 boys that run onto the park will serve it up. It is the last schoolboy derby match for the Kearsney boys (??) so I am sure they will want to make it a good one, College will be putting it on the line.

Take the time off, you can work tonight and sleep when you are dead…..

@BOG: Aye, Boggie, aye. Watching that Carte Blanche insert 2 weeks ago about that boykie that fell overboard ship in Indo, he said similar, that he was never going to miss another kids cricket or hockey match. I think Stephen Covey said similar, “nobody, on their deathbed, ever wished they had spent more time at work”. :-|

So – Buffel and Greenblooded – busy as I am preparing for my little detour into the Central Kalahari next week – I will be at Kearsney this afternoon. Not watching the firsts play though, cosYcos my sons hockey match is at the same time. They might move it up till 1.30pm though, as the 1st hockey has been cancelled.

Speaking of cricketers on a rugby blog, I just read some sad news on GCBs FB. A young cricketer, David Smyth, aged 28, matriculated at Grey in 2002. He went to the UK where he played club cricket in Derbyshire. He was also a personal trainer at Virgin and according to his brother,an extremely fit young man. He had been married for only 6 months. He suddenly fell ill and it was discovered that he had cancer in several areas of his body. He died of a heart attack. It just illustrates how precious life is, but also that it cannot be taken for granted. And death is not something which only happens to old people. If you are not living your life as if you are living your last 5 minutes , you should take stock, because life, is really just a vapour. This never made sense to me when I was young, but with every day that passes, it makes more and more sense

@beet: Rob Hank actually played SA Schools for two years – a rare feat – finished at MHS in ’74 and went down to Maties. he was a Collegians and Natal stalwart in the 80’s.

I would have thought Mort had packed it in by the time Cliffy Hopkins was in the Natal front row – Mort was already on the scene when we were still A section in the late 70’s when Bennie de Klerk and Wakka Basson were his front row competition. if I remember correctly it was either Cliffy hopkins or Hank that threw the first punch in the Natal game against the NZ Cavaliers in 1986 at kings Park.

@McCulleys Workshop: I remember Cliffie use to come back to play in Old Crocks games at Kearsney each year. Him and Mort Mortassagne were our Natal Currie Cup B-section props with Rob Hankinson at hooker. I think Rob played SA Schools as well and was also a really good provincial level rugby player in his day.

In 1982 the first girls were admitted to Hilton and Dave and I were almost expelled for being in their room after hours. We hid under their beds and I can still remember the look on his face as the headmaster lectured the twins.

Dale can boast Kenny Watson (1974). He went for cricket and played for SA in 1982.
Monde Zondeki (SA Cricket), though he didnt make SA Schools in rugby was one of the best schoolboy outside centers in his day.

Off the topic would be Buster Farrer (Hockey, Squash and Cricket for SA), Mike Jennings (Boks and SA Swimming in the 60s)- his father C.B. Jennings, who the Dale field is named after also played for the Boks at prop in the 30’s.

    LB Madsen – Springbok hockey – 1961
    Mike Madsen – Springbok hockey – 1968 to 1981
    PL Madsen – Springbok hockey – 1976 to 1987
    Trevor Madsen – Springbok hockey – 1977 to 1987 and Springbok cricket – 1989

The Madsen’s must be the best hockey family in SA. Then there is Lloyd Madsen from Kearsney who is a current SA hockey player who must be one of the 4 brother’s above’s sons who didn’t go to Glenwood or a cousin/nephew…

Its just surprising to see how many flyhalves are also good cricketers- Peter Kirsten, Darryl Cullinan, AB de Villiers — And an interesting comment by Allan Donald awhile ago. He said that at U 14 level, Johan Goosen was the quickest bowler that he had seen and while its difficult to make an objective assessment, he did think that he had the potential to go all the way

A talented young man – lets hope that he fulfills all this potential in whatever sporting code he chooses. Unfortunately the days of being able to play rugby and cricket after school are over so choices have to be made.

Similar all round potential as Pat Lambie a few years ago. Pat played Craven Week and SA Schools in his Grade 11 and 12 years as well as Nuffield Week in both of those years. He also captained both the Craven Week and Nuffield side in his final year.
Interestingly he too arrived at MHS more highly rated as a cricketer and also missed out on selection for Grant Khomo in his U16 year.

Eish. What a brilliant CV. What a talent. Hopefully his parents is wide awake and send him to the Champion cricket and rugby province. The Blue Bulls.
