Baby Boks play France at JWC2013

The Baby Bok team to play France in the final round of pool games at 20:45 on Thursday, 13 June 2013 has been announced. The big news is that SA’s star player Handre Pollard has been moved back to flyhalf after a miserable outing at inside centre against England. Pollard played flyhalf for the victorious JWC team of 2012, while he was still a schoolboy at Paarl Gymnasium.

The SA under-20 team just need a draw from this match to advance to the semi-finals. Although it’s not a given, the BB’s are the favourites to win this game. England should secure a bonus point win against the USA and as things stand, this along with their points difference achieved during the game, should be enough to see them advance to the semi-finals as well, provided that neither of the other two pool deciders end in draws.

In Pool B New Zealand plays Ireland and in Pool C its Wales and Argentina that have to battle it out. Only the winner of each of these matches is guaranteed to earn a place in the semi-finals, so the two games are like quarter-final knockouts in many respects. However that said, a draw in either game would be enough to see both sides involved in that match advance.

Front rows vrot, hookers even vrotter, locks vrotste. Kwagga would have made a difference in the loose yesterday, if you want to play a kortgat loosie, at least play a fast one (Stoney made some memorable tackles at least). Nine was poor, Pollard getting there and Kolbe sublime. Points collected, maybe just move on and hope for better.

@BOG: Thanks Bog. Just stripped with the arrogance of your friend. Agree with your last point but if we agree that his efficiency at turning the ball over is not up to standard. I do see that as a reason not to pick him.

@beet: In my opinion, humble of course, Swanepoel, ito natural talent, is only half a head behind Serfontein. I would expect Swanepoel, providing he remains injury-free, to become a regular partner next to his old buddy.Im sticking my neck out, but here goes- In the next 2 years, he ( Swanepoel ) will become the preferred 13 to JJ Engelbrecht in the BBs. That is how much I rate him. ( Also Engelbrechts shorts is a size or two to small and is going to cause him a hernia in a place he does not want one)

@Grasshopper: Except for the stupid way he threw the ball away to gift France their first try. I actually thought Senatla had a better all round game. Obi’s try was well taken, but set up by Kolbe.
But bottom line, with only 37% possession in the second half, a better side than France would have beaten us.

I think that the BBs are all trying to tackle the ball to much, not concentrating on bringing the man down. They miss the ball, the runner spins out of the tackle. Basics. They need to think, which Pollard seems to have got them doing in the last 10 minutes

Our locks are non existent, can’t jump, can’t catch, can’t tackle properly. The front row is doing OK, better than the last game but not dominating. We relying on talented backs to score miraculous tries. Pretty average side with two stars, Du Plessis and Colby…

You cannot play this game if you do not have the ball. Apart from the 1st minute we have looked shambolic. No trophy this year I am afraid. Time now for a new coach at this level.

@Ludz: @BuffelsCM:@Ploegskaar: @phat55: I think we can all agree that Kolbe is a good player. The difference in opinion is just concerning whether he makes it to the big leagues.

For me better examples than Brent Russell (1.70m) are Shane Williams and Neil Back (1.77m). 2 guys that defied the odds to have memorable international careers. Even Brad Thorn (1.95m). How many times have we dismissed locks of similar height as being too short.

@star: A lot to do with Dawie wanting a genuine inside centre. Had Serf been in France he would have worn 12 and Pollard 10 in the opening 2 games.

Tyler unfortunately lost out to Geduld and Swanepoel.

Geduld was quite possibly the player of the u19 season in 2012 but Tyler could not have been far behind and was desperately unlucky to lose out to Swanepoel.

@Ludz: I agree with you! I know he is small but he doesn’t shy away from making tackles. With ball in hand he is extremely dangerous and exciting. He played some excellent rugby in the Vodacom Cup as you’ve mentioned.

He has picked up a lot of muscle during the last 2 seasons but hasn’t lost pace.

I’ve seen him playing a few years ago at school – he created havoc for the opposition with the ball in hand

I think Cheslin Kolbe is gonna surprise a few. I’ve watched him in the Vodacom Cup this year, thought not SR or Test rugby, it’s still a senior players competition. he looked very good there, he’s elusive, hard to get a proper tackle on him added to that, he’s probably the most intelligent backline player I have seen at this level in a while for South Africa. I honestly can’t fault his defense.

Another season of 7s with Paul Treu would be good, it’ll further develop his skill set, also allow his body to develop without the physicality that come with 15 man rugby. He’s only 20, so his body must be looked after

Hope the pathetic first time tackling has been looked at. Even Gene Louw’s u/12″s tackle better.

Our front row wouldn’t even be stable against Boishaai’s u/15″s

Our locks play like powder puffers

    Stoney is a hooker

Who’ll be kicking for goal? Pollard can’t even kick out of hand anymore, let alone at the sticks.

Nothing wrong with Kolbe’s size, he’s a footballer like Doc used to say, footballers don’t need size

@valke: His creativity will be stifled at 9 with the lack of space around rucks and malls. You want him to run at the space between and behind big slow forwards and big slow backs (same thing nowadays!). A roaming 15 position, as with Willie, is perfect for him, his strength is slotting in at 10, 13 or wherever he identifies space, before the opposition (and sadly before his team mates) does so. Nothing wrong with his defense either, just ask BoishaaiPa.

@BOG: As forward definitely. But I also would not play Brussouw not because of his size but because opposition has identified him and he is easily countered. He is definitely not the best defender nor ball carrier therefore was chosen as ball pincher but everybody knows his style of play and he is not turning enough ball over to warrant his inclusion.

@vatikaki: Agreed. Both guys are way too small and their chances of advancing to the senior ranks is slim based on this. I think it’s a real pity for Kolbe coz he really has a fantastic rugby brain and backs it with good technique. He has good strength on his feet as well.

As for Geduld, yes in tight situations, that lack of weight on attack is a deficit. He will get driven backwards in contact when he has to crash. However he also poses such a mismatch that gaps not available to bigger sized centres are his for the taking and someone he showed time and time again last season, as he did in the all-important final, that tiniest bit of space is all he needs to cut open a D.

    @beet:

I suppose it is but even on attack I’d be seriously concerned about his size if he were to play senior rugby in the future. He’d be tossed around like a rag doll. Same goes for Cheslin Kolbe.

It’s all good having an entertaining highlights-reel, but size comes into play in many facets and if you take away that highlights reel, how is their overall game? It’s just so important to be winning the physical battle.

I assumed Dawie was going to use Geduld as an impact player off the bench so him starting has come as a bit of a shock.

@vatikaki: I’ve watched Geduld a couple of times for WP u19. He is very elusive on attack at 13. Famously remembered how he breezed past Jan Serfontein and co during last year’s u19 final.

I wonder if its possible to run a player at 13 on attack and 14 on D??? Coz due to his size he has obvious defensive limitations even in this relatively young u20 age-group?
