Elton Jantjies’ questionable behaviour on a flight back from Turkey may turn out to be an international rugby career ender for the 31-year-old Springbok flyhalf.
Others who have served as cover at 10 recently include veterans Morne Steyn and Frans Steyn, who are both probably too old for international consideration now.
With about 16-months to go until Rugby World Cup 2023 in France, the Bok coaches are probably going to have to place trust in a debutant to become incumbent Handre Pollard’s deputy.
The worry is that in spite of all the talent that is produced via the strong schoolboy rugby system in South Africa, something has gone wrong in the development process of promising young flyhalves between leaving school and senior rugby and now SA stocks look thinner than ever in this crucial pivotal position.
One wishes that Monument old boy Jaco van der Walt had not commit to Scotland so soon, as he’s just the third choice on that side at the moment, whereas he could have been the man of the potential Green and Gold vacancy.
For now people will probably gravitate towards the Lions’ Jordan Hendrikse as the most likely candidate. There is not much to choose from in terms of overseas based players with Tristan Tedder of Perpignan in the Top 14 being the most likely player of interest.
Whatever happens in terms of the selections, it is time for some introspective. SA needs better produce better quality flyhalves. This can only be achieved through more intense focus on what is going wrong after school and coming up with solutions that help ensure a better stock than what’s currently available at senior level.
Goosen is n sieknote.
@Steve K: true…
There are a lot of talented flyhalves coming through the school system, but for whatever reason they keep getting overlooked by our local selectors, and they are getting snapped up by overseas clubs.
Sonder beserings is Goosen egter ook my keuse.
@PRondersteuner: spot on my vriend.
Hoekom is Chait Sharks toe? Just my 2 cents.
