The Bulls name a powerful u19 team

The Bulls have named their under-19 team to take on the Leopards in a Currie Cup under 19 preseason friendly at Loftus at 12:00pm on Thursday 28 June.

Even without big name players like IRB Young Player of the Year Jan Serfontein (Grey College), SA Schools players Stoney Steenkamp (Monnas), Jacques du Plessis (Ermelo) and Dries Swanepoel (Grey College) and the likes of Carlo Engelbrecht, Dennis Visser (both Affies), Burger Odendaal (Monnas), Ryan Germishuys (Selborne) and Justin Forwood (Klofies) this still looks like one heck of a powerful team. There are no fewer than 5 SA u18 representatives in the 22-man squad. It’s little wonder the Bulls are the firm favourites to win this year’s under 19 title.

Bulls u19 team:

1. Jaco Victor (Marais Viljoen)
2. Jacques Taylor (Glenwood)
3. Neethling Fouche (Grey Bloem)
4. Irne Herbst (Waterkloof)
5. Phillip du Preez (Monnas)
6. Leneve Damens (Grey Bloem)
7. Ferdi Horn (Glenwood)
8. Roelof Smit (Waterkloof)
9. Kafentse Mahlo (Ben Voster)
10. Francois Tredoux (Waterkloof)
11. Ruwellen Isbel (Grey Bloem)
12. Dean Moolman (Glenwood)
13. Jade Stigling (St Albans)
14.Jason Kriel (Dirkie Uys)
15. Juan Smit (Ben Voster)
16. Andrew Beerwinkel (Porterville)
17. Theuns Reynolds (Monnas)
18. Gerrit Engelbrecht (Nelspruit)
19. Paul Janse van Rensburg (Affies)
20. Kirk Pretorius (Pta Boys High)
21. Jerome Bastick (Marais Viljoen)

@Ludz, OK I was trying to point out that defensive players can do well too. Many teams use their defense as a way of turning over the ball and attacking. In fact it’s Boks main way of scoring as we are not creative enough to conjure up tries from the back like the Kiwi’s. Moolman is an old school hard as nails tackler…

Honiball and Moolman are completely different players, aside from their defensive capabilities

@Horsie, Fran will play Vodacom Cup and probably Currie Cup this year. He is definitely there or thereabouts for the full Sharks side. With regards to Moolman, I hope he proves you wrong and goes all the way. Something can be said for solid defenders eg Pieter Muller and Henry Honiball in the past..

@Greenhopper: Yeah. I won’t forget the Sharks u19 vs WP game at KP last year. One of the built for speed WP reserves got the ball and took off down the touchline from inside his own 22. Dean was in midfield and had to cut down the angle. He had quite a bit of ground to cover to get into possie to make the tackle. I still can’t believe how quickly Dean got across. His speed certainly didn’t come thru during SBR. :)

I heard you don’t have to make CW to be chosen for SA Schools anymore so maybe they still have a chancee?

    @grasssie
Also there is Jacques du Plessis there. Big lad! So the move is most def good. Will be hard for him to make it with so much talent at Bulls!
Where is Frans Kleynhans now anyways?

    RE: Moolman
He is a great defender and average attacker which is why he will be in the bench for this side when Swanepoel and Serfontein return!
He and Tyler were good together but alone Tyler continues to shine while Dean is just a tackling bag!
He’s more like Wynand Olivier, will make almost every tackle asked of him but never provides anything on attack!

@Ludz, it’s a small world and fly often. I am in SA about 3 times a year on business and whilst there I sneek in a game or 2. I have seen Dean play live about 4 times, so I do know how he plays. Thankfully I move back to SA for good later this year so will be able to watch nearly every game..

Dean is very good at attack if given the gap or put into space, quicker than most think he is , also a good ball carrier , i think if the fly half plays him correctly you will see he can be very good , Defensively well, just ask the three grey bloom boys and look at the picture most GW boys have of him in that match

@Ludz, I get your point, but if he takes the ball up crash ball and has a creative runner on the outside he is great. When he played with Fisher they made a great combo. He is a great distributor, so lets see what happens.

Grassy, don’t get me wrong,I hope they can,but from what I’ve seen Dean is good defensively, but offensively he needs to improve drastically if he’s to have a long term future, even Allan said to me he was very impressed when Dean played for his team last year, but fair enough we’ll see what they can do this season

@Ludz, Moolman was probably the best defensive centre in KZN last year, he was the Glenwood man of the match against Grey Bloem in Bloem. He is not as creative as some but no one will get past him, that is for sure. Kind of like a young Pieter Muller. Ferdi Horn was a skillful lock and an excellent lineout specialist. To write them off now is stupid. Both Shaun Adendorff and Marcell Coetzee both did not make KZN Schools but doing well. Give these guys a chance to play a season before judging them.

@Moneyball: What a pity those Queens boys aren’t given a chance to challenge for SA Schools honours this year. It’s hard to believe that talented kids that have worked this hard for 3 seasons now are denied their rightful opportunity to perform at CW. :-(

Grassy it’s not about Glenwood, take a chill pill bud, just don’t they see much action post junior rugga,on the other hand I think that Taylor is very good,no Queen’s boys signed for Bulls,so I suppose it’s to be expected that there are no Queen’s boys

@Horsie, Ferdi was always going to end up as a loose forward in senior rugby. He lacked the height and size to play lock at a higher level, I mean look at Paul Willemse (6foot6 and 128kg). Ferdi has the skills and speed to become a great flank in the Fran Kleyheins and Warren Whiteley type mould.

Great to see the 3x Glenwood boys in the starting side. All 3 were great players at school and have carried this on afterwards. Good luck boys, we are proud of you. Use Shaun Adendorff’s success as motivation to make the SA Under20 side in 2013. Glenwood lacked leaders of your quality this year.
