February summer sports weekend

Recently Reddam from the Cape won a prestigious water polo tournament at Grey College. This kind of sets them up as the team to beat in SA at the moment.

In the pool Westville appears to be dominant as usual. After a recent gala at Glenwood, WBHS’s own website stated  “several  of the swimmers from this age group are sure to make their mark on the international scene in the near future,” which is great news for SA, particularly since such a great deal of our Olympic medal hopes rest on our national swimmers.

Cricket remains anyone’s guess who top dogs are.  There is a national T20 championship sponsored by Coca-Cola on the go and a winner will be crowned. The finals will be held towards the end of February. So far Westville and Hilton have progressed to determine who the Dolphins champs will be. In Gauteng Trintyhouse will meet St Stithians on 06/02/13 in a Lions semi-final of sorts. The winner of this game will meet the winners of the North West final between Potch Gimmies vs Lichtenburg. In SWD Oakdale will play either Langenhoven or Outeniqua in the regional final. The Eastern Cape seems to be quite far off determining any winners. Boland has seen Paarl Boys High and Paul Roos advance to their final. The Boland winners will play Western Province titleholders Rondebosch for the Cape Cobras honours. The likes of Waterkloof and EG Jansen still have a shot at making it to the Titans champs game. Noordkaap will have to wait until 08/02/13 to find which Free State school they will face in the Knights region final.

@Playa: What i find to be a classic was last year i went to watch Dale play Grey PE in PE and there were some Dale old boys above us who had had a beer or two and everytime Grey would cheer they would shout ye the only way Grey can beat Dale is to use Queenians (Grey captain last year Gary Loest).

The one even suggested Grey PE change there kit to White and Blue and call them a Queens invatation team.

Not saying this type of banter is right but there is a point there what Queenian says about getting a 100 old boys to pitch at every Southwood game with banners i think is a good idea.

@Umtata: Those Under 16s were very mediocre last year. I hope they have matured.

@Queenian: That’s quite a huge return. The loss of Fortuin is a pity.It angers me everytime I think of it.

Dale havent had a big pack in ages. In 2001, Dale had a big pack (the last I saw), but were complemented with a useless backline (and coach).A forgettable year in Dale rugby.
I remember in 2009, Queens had a massive pack though, one of the biggest schoolboy packs in the country that year.

As for Selborne churning out big boys…I think QC86 must be pushing a lot of discounted meat to those boys.

Maybe it is just as well as I would have overwhelmed you with my charm and you would not have been able to speak bad about Westville ever again  Also I have a sneaking suspicion I know who Horsy is and if I am right you defintely do not want to meet him  I presume the vested interest means your lightie has started at GW. @Grasshopper: Sadly so although Queens had a big pack in 2011 same year Selborne had the monsters Queens lost to Selborne in Queenstown that year and Drew in East London and the funny thing is of the last few years the 5 biggest pack members of the Selborne teams 3 have been Old Queenian sons. Gone are the 80,s when Queens had strong forwards. I think Dale and Queens will have to make do with this in future and play a an expansive game as they have been doing, only problem is against a team like Affies this can be quite a challange.

Remember in 1981 Queens playing Affies were Queens just completely over powered them which seems like a fanatsy now i think the game against Affies this year at MC 150 will be the first time they have played since then.

@Queenian, hasn’t that been the case for a while. Both Dales and Queens having small packs and lightening backs. It was the case last year and the year before that. It seems only Selborne down there pump out huge packs with kids in the 120kg’s sometimes….

@Umtata: Dale and Queens will be have very similar teams this year with quick backs and a light pack which will make life difficult for them, Selborne is the oppersite there backs will be ordinary but will have a big pack.

I see Dale and Queens both have 1 Zim boy of note will be intersting to see what impact they make.

@Umtata: I think Dale will be in a rebuilding phase this year there Under16A last year were quite weak watched them play 3 games Grey PE /Queens/Selborne and were easly beaten so maybe a tough year for Dale i do hear that they have at least one Zim import who is good so we will see.

@Grasshopper: In schools swimming it is mostly 4 x 50m relays for the various strokes and IM. Not much individual stuff so much more teamwork required compared to private swimming where it’s mostly every man for himself.

You are quite correct when you say that the top swimmers are not products of their schools – these guys are made by their club coaches and their own hardcore dedication, blood, sweat and tears. People have no idea at the ammount of training that goes into a top swimmer. Westville can be proud of having Chad at their school but they certainly can’t claim to have made him into an Olympic Gold medalist.

@Horsie and Star, it seems maybe in 4 years time Westville might not have it all their way in the pool. Schools have woken up to the fact that swimming can deliver huge recognition and PR eg Chad. It probably less of an investment as a great swimmer is a great swimmer not because of the school but because of their individual coaches and their own minds. Not being a team sport really, except in relays etc there are less dynamics to sort. I wonder in any of the Cape Schools would compete eg Rondebosch?

@BOG: Ja, the Komga – KWT – Grahams stretch was terrible, so the EL route might have been better but it was the Kokstad – Mthatha section, then to 30km out of Mthatha that was the worst. Then all the small towns – Mt Frere, Idutywa, Butterworth that also caused big delays … Just for a lekker drive, got to be the top road. It’s further but I have to check fuel consumption – just to be able to put it on speed control will save me the gas I used overtaking … and you cannot put a price on sanity.

There are kids that don’t see their parents during term at all, some exceptionally sad circumstances. A kid in my lighties cricket team is from Pinetown – his mother came to watch him play against Glenwood on a Sat morning, then didn’t take him home for the weekend. Weird for me. My son has on occasions brought boys home that he just feels sorry for. It’s the downside of getting private bursaries via the employer and not being able to afford the transport to pick them up on weekends.

On the DHS away weekend we will have 7 of his mates staying over – lekker – be nice to have a full house, bloody quiet right now!!

@CollegeOB’s, I think the isolation is a good idea to build ‘gees’ but 3 weeks seems a little bit of Kamp Stalraad. Glenwood do a 2 or 3 day army course and team building exercise at the Bluff army base, similar to a leadership course. This is for day dogs and boarders. Boarders I think sometimes don’t see their parents for months, especially those with parents in the deep darkest parts of kzn and other provinces. That is why boarders are tougher, no mommies boys there. BUT if it’s worked for College for decades why break something that doesn’t need fixing……good on them. Those poor buggers must go home for the weekend just looking for the nearest chick to chat up…

@Gungets Tuft: All good points. The cell phone scenario is actually controlled by the boys themselves. The staff at College ate fully aware of the opportunity to make contact via various gadgets. There is however an honor code amongst the boys not to do this. This brings them even closer. When the boys leave College they always look back on this 2nd form year and comment on how great it was and the friends they made. This is what the 3 weeks is all about. If it affects a result or two then so be it.

    @Grasshopper: Phones not allowed.

The boys and parents take the whole isolation thing seriously. While it seems harsh, it really works well to get the boys to gell as a unit and get over the homesickness. It also gives the boys 3 weeks to get perspective. They come in straight out of Gr7 where they are kings of the castle in primary school. The discipline and pecking order is a real shock to the system but they quickly realise that this is all it is, a reversion back to reality from being a 1st team hero.

A lot of the performance problem is also sheer excitement on Friday night. There are various traditions that are followed – boot polishing (blacking the boots to remove white, yellow stripes etc), team testing, they all mean that the lighties are hyped to the gills on that Friday. Perhaps Greenblooded is right, braai on Friday for the parents would increase performance, but remember that parents live as far away as Newcastle, Empangeni, Kokstad etc, so a long way for them to come in for the braai, then again on Saturday, or expensive to stay over when they will also have to stay over on Saturday for the Sunday picnic.

@Grasshopper: In your day there was a good chance that the top teams had a higher proportion of day-boys. That is now not the case. The top players, the prefects as well, are much more likely to be boarders, so the effect is amplified. Socio-economic fallout …

It’s tried and tested over many years – it is the best for the kids and settling in, perhaps we need to play an easier fixture that weekend.

    @BOG: #$%#$^!#$$ Transkei!!!

We took the Mthatha, Idutywa, Komga, KWT road down. It was a living breathing nightmare. Everything is broken, stukkend and kaput. What is supposed to be 9 hours took 11. At times we were doing 10kph. I will need a Jesuit priest to take a life oath that they have fixed that hellhole before I ever take that road again. On the way back we did Queenstown, MacLear, Matat. Took 10 hours on the nose with a coffee and sticky bun stop at a lekker little shop in MacLear and diesel in Kokstad. about 10 trucks in total the whole way although it pissed with rain a lot of the time.

@GreenBlooded: No money for tow-truckers daarso, if you crash there you just leave the car, steal a donkey and ride out to civilisation, steak a cows kop in Butterworth for padkos.

@All Black, jeez boet take a chill pill. I was just saying that other schools also have to cope with merging kids from different schools together, some more than others. The College no contact system may be the harshest but it will be tested with smartphones unless those are taken away too. All I remember is College Under13a’s still used to win easily in the first few weeks in my day, no excuses either way. I’m sure they will improve drastically over the year and probably win the return fixture to prove your hypothesis…..it was an observation not a dig…

The standards are very up and down, but I believe they have plans in place to lift things. Ryk Neethling did not do to badly “without water” Just to let you know that they dont just play rugby- they can swim and run as well(and a bit of cricket in between) Last w/e they participated in a gala in Pretoria- St Sithians-230 points; St Davids 244; Affies 292; GCB 399; Pretoria Boys 417. This weekend they will be in that little Dorp, called Durbies at Westvilles gala (I believe they swim a little there) and swim the Midmar on Sunday. Not sure how they will do. To keep them tough , they normally swim swim in mid winter with a nice thick layer of ice Athletics at Affies:(also last w/e) GCB 27 Gold, 19 Silver; Affies 29 Gold, 33 Silver

@Gungets Tuft: Welcome back GT!! Nice to see you survived the Kei roads. Tow truck operators must make a fortune down there.

I was a day dog at Glenwood but I seem to think the boarders arrive a few days before term starts, get their pipes cleaned by the prefects and get into boarding mode. Most certainly the College system is the harshest induction I have heard of with the parents taking it harder than the boys most time. I think Kearsney have a week isolation and only from Monday to Firday but I stand to correction on this.

If the system at College is affecting sports results then perhaps they need to tweak the arrangement slightly – have a Friday evening braai to get over the emotions or not allow the Saturday sports contact which would be harsh. I do however think that all due credit should be given to Glenwood for the win.

The College kids get dropped off at school on the Saturday preceding the term start on the following Wednesday. Mom and Dad say goodbye and there is then ZERO contact for 3 weeks.

On that first February weekend (the one just past) the parents are allowed to watch their boys play sport, then they leave. On the Sunday they come to the school and spend the day with their boys, then leave until Friday 8th when they can take them home for the weekend – the boys still need to fulfil their sports obligations. This past weekend will have proved to be one of the most emotional days in the boys lives. It is still a vivid memory for me – arriving at the field where my boy was playing, watching him hit a 6, then see me and go out the next ball.

Unless you have been there you will not understand. Unless the majority of the team is day-boys then even the fighting spirit is sucked out of a boarder team made up of 13 year old boys.

The “excuse” for the U15’s and 1sts is that the opposition was better.

    @Grasshopper:
Yes the Glenwood team deserves SOME praise but All Black, is right. A lot of the Glenwood team is day-boys while almost the whole College team boards. Also, don’t underestimate how happy and one-minded the kids are when they finally get to interact with the outside world again. Also, Glenwood benefitted from getting almost the whole Glenwood Prep team while College has a maximum of 2 boys from one school in THEIR team.
Lots of things at play which IMO left College 4 wickets down before the match even started…

@All Black, so what is the excuse for the 1st team and Under15A losses then? I have never heard of a College side not fighting for victory. Remember other schools also have these sorts of induction programs and also have to mash together kids from many different schools into a team, so we are all in the same boat early on in the term. I’m sure College will improve as they always do but give Glenwood some praise for a pretty good win….

I wouldnt get too excited about beating College U14A cricket on this particular weekend. I think College have lost this fixture for as long as I can remember. It is the first time that 2nd formers can see or talk to their parents after a 3 week period that started with a camp in January. Kids more focused on seeing Mom and Dad. It is actually a really nice day for all concerned.

Well I do think that our U16A team will have a great season alongside that of Westville. Hopefully one or two boys from both teams get KZN selection. From DHS I’m personally liiking at Ross, De Meillon, Fletcher, Bryan and Noot. At least 2 should make provs.

Can’t wait for rugby too!! When do your U14 trials occur??

@ Horsy- I think it was more WBHS self destructing. They had DHS at 63 for 7 at one stage and allowed the tail to wag for far too long to get to 114. Then in the chase Westville were 58 for 3 with 30 overs remaining and somehow conspired to lose the game from there. A lot of introspection required. Ironically the only team to lose in the u14/15/16 age groups and they are supposed to be the dream team having lost only 5 games in the past 2 years.

I see. A 1st team cricket player? Phipson,Stephens, Teversham are the only ones there so which one are you talking about??

    RE Basketball
    1st DHS won 98-55
    2nd DHS won 28-27
    16A DHS lost 28-23
    16C DHS lost 33-17 to WBHS 16B
    15A DHS lost 33-32
    15B DHS lost 33-19
    14A DHS lost 32-9
    14B DHS lost 33-2
    14C DHS won 8-4

Boys will bounce back I’m sure of it!!!

    RE Rugby

DHS U14 will definitely have a much better team than they do a cricket one!
I think right now GWD,WBHS and DHS look like having great seasons!

I see the U16A results, I wonder who destroyed the WBHS team after they’d done so well to constrain the DHS team to just 114 runs!!

@ Westville U15A 168/8 DHS 115/10. Westville won by 53 runs. Results in the Sunday Tribune. Back to U14s. One of the DHS parents told us they could not believe a Prep 1st team player was now playing E team at Westville. Besides the A team winning by 174 runs, B team by 8 wickets, C team by 117 runs, D team by 131 runs E team by 8 wickets. A lot of depth. I wonder how the rugby will look like. Looking forward to the season big time.

Yeah I sort of knew Westville had a very good U14 age group this year besides the swimmers who are probably 4th in KZN overall.

I do think our U15B polo team won 8-2 and U15A won 20-1 so we got our revenge as far as that goes. DHS did win 3/5 polo fixtures…

As for basketball, I don’t think Westville is creeping past DHS, in fact come 2nd round those scores will be wuite different.

Also remember that your current U15 and U16A sides have lost all previous games so we mightve been a bit underprepared.
    Well done though…

Where are the results, would like to see them?

Well done to that U16 team, its now 2 draws, 1 loss and 1 win for them vs Westville…

@ Horsy- I think it was you that said that the Westville U14 swimmers would have a long season. Well it seems not so the other sports. U14A cicket Westville won by 174 runs. Waterpolo U14A won by 20 0. Basketball Westville won 32 9. And while we are on basketball I see that Westville won the U16 and U15 A games ( and in fact all the games in the U16/15/14 age groups). Could Westville be sneaking past DHS on the basketball court ?
Your dream cricket team( u16a) beat Westville for the first time in over 2 years. Devastated

Good to hear Glenwood 1st’ s and Under14A’s winning the cricket, not sure of the other results. I think College won the 1st waterpolo easily, which was no surprise after coming 15th in the Grey College tourno, looks a weak open year in the pool for us…

DHS 1st cricket I’m hoping will get their revenge on Westville! Also hoping that after 3 draws and 1 loss against WBHS the U16A side will finally get a win! U15A didn’t meet last year as U14s so they will be new to each other while U14 batch is still new, don’t know what to expect.

Water polo should be even overall though…

@All, does anyone know where Roger has gone too? Anyway, it looks like relations with KES are actually OK as Glenwood will be hosting them and Parktown for a big gala down here in KZN, see here; http://www.glenwoodhighschool.co.za/hosting-king-edward-and-parktown-boys%E2%80%99-8-10-february-2013

Hopefully this paves the way for other sports and relations going forward. It seems Parktown are happy to start up a few sports with Glenwood too, although in rugby I’m not sure it will be a good match down the line….

@ Horsy- How is the weather looking? I think if DHS get their early season form back( didn’t they beat Affies) then it will be a good contest. My son plays at Old Boys which is great as I can watch the match, the Test match and have a cold Hansa all at the same time. There has been nothing between these teams for 2 years although DHS have lost Koekemoer to Kearsney and Bryan to the first team .

I see that St Charles beat MC by 5 wickets and Hilton MHS by 6. The final was then won by Hilton on a forfeit( St Charles were 4-0 at the time.) Never heard of that before. The provincial final will be at Kingsmead on the 7th between my two old schools. Good stuff. The beer will be sweet either way.
