The South African under-18 Sevens team beat the hosts Australia 22-7 to claim the gold medal in Sydney. This was a good achievement by our schoolboys. Based on the international rugby standings of the countries that participated the SA team was always on track to win either gold or silver. Significantly they beat Australia 30-12 in the group match as well to underline their dominance but in truth the rest of the competition were walkovers. Other wins were 58-0 and 64-0 against Japan, 38-0 against Tonga and 73-0 against hapless China. That’s 233-0 in four games. Unpretty indeed! With New Zealand being a stones throw away from Sydney, it was disappointing that they did not send a team across the Tasman.
The SA under-18 girls team did not fair very well. They finished fourth out of five. They beat China convincingly on Day 1. Had they carried their form during that game into Day 2, they might have won a medal.
Keep a look out for the 12 boys in the SA u18 Sevens team, many of them are sure bets to do very well doing the up and coming 2013 SBR season:
