Baby Boks in comfortable win against UWC

Coach Dawie Theron was a satisfied man on Friday evening after his SA under-20 Baby Bok team recorded an easy 65-7 win against the University of the Western Cape. Theron gave most of his squad a run. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the awarding of the captaincy to Bulls and former Tygers lock Marvin Orie. The team expects to come up against much stiffer opposition in the next week with games against the Maties and UCT on the agenda. Assistant coaches Nazeem Adam and Brendan Venter have officially been retained for the 2013 Junior World Championships in France later this year.

Baby Boks – Tries: Luther Obi, Jacques du Plessis (2) , Jan Serfontein (2), Ruan Steenkamp, Dries Swanepoel, Tyler Fisher, Eugene Le Maitre, JP Lewis (2). Conversions: Handre Pollard (3), Robert du Preez, Tim Swiel.

@Ludz: I would not like to comment as I am probably biased on this, but I did see the semi-final of the u/19’s and there was only one hooker on the field and he was not wearing red  ….All these players are very talented and each of them brings something else to the game. Do you want a hooker who is strong scummager and solid or one who is good in the loose and ball fetching…They all have different areas of strenghth and all very good….It all depends what DT needs in his setup.

@BoishaaiPa: @QC86: everyone who was lucky enough to watch some of the u19 games rated him as the best with Freddie Kirsten a close 2nd, but knowing Eugene very well, he’ll leave a lasting impression by the time they finish the camp, he’s an incredibly driven player

@Ludz: He was only called in as cover for injured Fred Kirsten who has a niggle in the groin area. Kirsten was advised to rather not put any strain on his groin for next three to 4 weeks and will thus not play in the warm-up matches.

Well done U18s – great after the emergent 7s focus on schools here. Great that the national 7s team gets a tour too.

    And in other news …

” The South African Under-18 men’s team won the Sevens gold medal at the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney on Saturday morning (SA time) after defeating host nation Australia 22-7 in the final.

Earlier in the day the SA U18 Women’s team finished in a credible fourth position after losing their bronze medal playoff match 27-0 against Japan, while Tonga was awarded bronze in the men’s division following their 26-0 win over Japan. ”

I have read elsewhere that they will be actively testing kids for banned substances this year-whole teams. It would appear that they are going to begin with the so-called spots schools- GCB, PRG, Affies, Boishaai— and that these schools are giving their full support. Lets see what transpires.

Would’ve loved to see Johan Meyer, the young sharks player given a trial run. Injury ended his season last year . One of the best schoolboy 8’s ive ever seen

@star: Think we’ll get an indication of the 1st choice team in the games against Maties and UCT

@ Beet- I see Sti made the starting line up. Does that give any indication of Theron’s future plans? Also Geduld started ahead of Tyler at no 13 to partner Serfontein.

@QC86: oh ya he was a late call up, forgot to tell you about it, he seemed very hyped up about it, he’s been waiting patiently for his call up

Well it is cricket season and the uni guys are probably still partying from the new year, carrying extra weight and unfit. But hey it’s a hit out at least…..
