School cricket in full swing again

With the coastal schools returning to school this week, the school cricket fixture list for this weekend looks to be jam-packed. Any updates or the compiling of news on which teams are doing what, be it scoring runs or taking wickets or both would be appreciated. Hopefully mother nature gives the boys a break and we have some dry Saturdays and other match days.

@ Horsy- Good luck for the match today. I see Bryan took 3 wickets for you guys. Great guy. How many other U16s are in the first team? It seems Westville is the only school not to send their U16s up.

Really don’t know about the fixtures hey..Westville obviously regards swimming as their no.1 sport which is why they aren’t willing to cancel.also, if the stopped swimming against Glenwood it would mean that they wouldn’t have ANY Gala to swim in.

    DHS Polo results vs Clifton:
    1st Clifton 21 DHS 3
    U15A Clfton 14 DHS 7
    U14A Clifton 15 DHS 3

Clifton klapping DHS!! But its to be expected when they have holiday polo training while we started last week…

@ Greenblooded- In the last 2 days Westville has competed against GW twice. It seems it is head to fixtures that are still subject to an embargo. However swimming galas and cricket tournaments involve other schools and so I suppose it makes sense not to let the” tiff” effect the credibility of these events.

Yup – Westville way i front overall – photo finnish for 2nd/3rd between Kearsney and Westville with Northwood 4th by quite a way.

With Westville present – does this mean the embargo is off or does it just not apply to swimming?

Well done to Glenwood. Westville making the same mistake DHS made when they were the best Swimming school in SA.
They are now relying too much on their reputation. They are basically saying that if you want to succeed in swimming then go to WBHS without actually offering scholarships.
I think this year will be tough for Westville. Glenwood U14 are cleaning up and DHS U15 are sniffing blood…
Don’t think Westville will lead for long

@HORSEFLY NO.1: That is just the U14’s. I’m not sure but my guess is the WBHS won overall. The point is that Glenwood is building aquatics from the bottom up and this is the first year of that effort. Hopefully the lessons learned will cause the ‘bottom-up’ philosophy to filter into all codes. Very nice to see – looks like some confort zones may need to be re-assessed in the next few years. GO GREEN!!

Still not sure about the twins – have they been sighted at HC or GWD? Anyone know where Gareth Kemp ended up?

Rumour has it that there was a gala today at Glenwood and that at said gala the Glenwood U14’s kicked butt – namely those of Westville (3rd) and Kearsney (2nd). Nicely done lads!! Let this be the beginning of a great era of Glenwood aquatics. Not sure how the other age groups went but it is heartening to see the young-un’s carrying the flag. GO GREEN IN THE POOL!!!

You can not seriously tell me Adriaan Strauss is not a better hooker than Kyle Cooper, the oke can’t throw to save his life where as Strauss was the best hooker in the Southern Hemisphere last year if not the world after Bismarck’s injury, as much as I love the way Burden and Cooper play, you can’t justify even suggesting that they are better hookers than Strauss

@Gawie, never said we had the better end of the draw on my personal cricket experience mentioned above. In the under15 game against Grey Bloem this year we did. in my game in 92 we were behind the 8 ball big time at 80/8 within an hr or so. Westville’s Ryan De Beer had ripped through us and I was told boy you stay in there and don’t lose your wicket. I batted so defensively I only scored about 5 runs per hour. Myself and Gary just blocked and blocked. It got so dark at one point Westville had to use spinners only and we had about 6 around the bat. I was definitely no great batsman but knew how to defend, which I did for my life. I had some far better personal achievements in my bowling over the years but that was my best batting performance ever. Really proud of it, so for Beast to come in and say it’s impossible when he was not there is below the belt….

@TheBeast, your attacks are becoming personal now. If you want to meet to discuss in an adult manner then let’s do so. Yes, it was a 3hr stand boet, from 2pm in the afternoon until 5pm. Not sure if you know but school’s A teams used to play declaration games in the 90’s no limited overs with games starting at 9am, but you are probably too young to remember that. The game was Under13A in 1992, Glenwood vs Westville. Westville scored 222/8 with me taking 3 wickets. We then batted and were in trouble at 80/8 and myself and a guy called Gary Sadler batted for 3 hrs to get to 130/8 and bad light stopped play. It was a 9th wicket partnership so I was wrong there….

Just checked and there is a whole football pitch opposite Glenwood in Rhodes Avenue, they should buy that. Also there is quite a bit of land behind the tennis courts on Bulwer rd. What is stopping expansion of the High school is Open Air school and Glenwood Junior primary. If the High had that ground there would be plenty space. Of course they could never oust those schools unless they had other premises to go to……

@star: Apparently DHS passed up an option to buy Berea Park in the 1970s. Eina! They are negotiating now. Personally I can’t see it working out but all they really need is a section of that park, big enough to build a new cricket field which could convert to 2 rugby fields at a squeeze.

@ Gungets- I see that Shepstone is the captain of the College U16A and had unbelievable figures of 4 wickets for 2 runs. Tyson had 3 for 15 runs and so it seems that the next tier is grabbing iropportunity with open arms.

@Grasshopper: Not sure how much it cost, sorry. Could find out.

Was checking Google Earth for College – I see that they have been doing some flying, the new pavillion is visible already. Apparently the atmosphere inside there is unbelievable, didn’t stay for the matches yesterday as duty called in Durbs. Will make some time next week to catch a match.

I see College have space for the 50m pool but reckon that should be last on the list. We have 2 olympic pools within 10 minutes so rather just use those – build onto the new pavillion for some indoor cricket lanes and an indoor hockey court – much better return on that. I remember early morning sessions at the Alexandra park pool, 1st October in PMB, not heated, had the brass monkeys weeping ….

Your campus too crowded – 50m pool there is going to take out 1/2 of the tennis court (it is a tennis court – yes) and ther is no space at all for a pavillion at all. What is the vacant land across the road – buy that.

@Grasshopper: The Ships Captain recently spent R65 million on his house, he can afford it, but R25million sound like a hellova lot for that. Just make digging a rugby warm up – 1m per team per training session, you will have the hole in no time. Then you could try a “wax on, wax off” trick for the plastering – or get the shooting team for the gunnite guns ..

DHS best placed to go olympic, got some space to widen pool (google earth confirms it is 50m long!!), the basics there for the pavillion. From the edge of the soutern pavillion on the main field to the edge of the warmup pool is 132m, so you are pretty screwed for a full size rugby field including scoring zones.

And in the Google Earth photo it is clear that your point fielder is standing too square, he needs to take 10 steps to his left ..

To be honest, not sure that an olympic is necessary – just use the Durban pool, save some money and space. All said though – having 50m space for training is nice – when I was at College the A team practice was a mission, had 3 people sharing lanes for the cardio stuff, but we got by. Having one for swimming and one for polo .. now that could work…

@Bog, I never said ringing the bell by grade or matrics was started by Glenwood, I was just chatting to another Glenwood blogger about when it was started there. I’m sure many schools started it before us as did many UK schools start traditions before Grey, College, Bishops etc. In fact, the war cry Jimolayo Ji was taking from College singing it and changed to a Glenwood version. Westville have done that too. Maybe College picked that up from an older school. Anyway, schools do copy traditions that is why it’s so great when they have war cry sing offs etc…..I by no means was saying that Glenwood started bell ringing, however we do have other traditions that Grey might not have and vice versa…

Well yeah sometimes boys catch on earlier than expected even. one of the DHS U14 boys who’d never played polo before 2012 caught on quickly and made KZN U14 last year.

I’ve also found that teams with average keepers do struggle, its fine to have an OK player out-field but you are caught out if your goalie is inexperienced.

On the last day before you leave to cram, the matrics walk over the stage and greet the headmaster for the last time while a teacher plays Ol laing Syme (??) on the piano. With many a tear they then proceed under the original school bell outside the reunion hall (not to be missed on your next visit- this is where the original Springbok/Protea/SA jerseys are kept) Once they have passed under the bell, they are then officially Old Greys.( Thankfully, not too many return the following year as OGs and matrics)

@ Gungets- You forgot Westville U15E beating College U15D by 3 runs.
@ Greenies- Are you guys happy with the fact that the ” embargo” seems to going no where fast. Have you also not considered how the rugby fallout with Westville will effect other sports?Hockey for example is usually played on the same day as rugby. How is this now going to work from a logistics perspective. And where do you draw the line with what sports are played and which are not. If you are going to stick to your principles it should be all or nothing. It is a mess and the sooner management get together to reach consensus the better.
@ Horsy- I was thinking about the Van Zyl issue. Surely next year he will be U19 and therefore in terms of the new agreement he would have to sit out a year. If that is the case surely there has been a lot of short term thinking by a lot of selfish parties.
@ Westville,GW and MC- The privates handed us our butts in the water polo pools. Well done to those schools.

@Greenblooded, actually I think it only started in about 95. I never did it coming in 2nd form in 92. It’s a great tradition and should be kept. In our matric year we bounced Maher’s car from it’s original spot to another…hahah

@Grasshopper: Any idea when the bell ringing ceremony began? I suspect it was the year after I left – I remember Maher speaking passionately in the final assembly about introducing some ceremony to the arrival and departure of boys from Glenwood. This was prompted by some boys who thought that dropping waterbombs from the top floor onto people below was an appropriate way to celebrate the fial day of school. They were promptly caned in full view – imagine leaving school on the last day of matric with a sore arse!! I would guess that the bell ringing started in 1989 or maybe a year later.

Glenwood 2nd formers (grade 8) camp, this is how to get ‘gees’ and comradrie going early on; http://www.glenwoodhighschool.co.za/form-ii-boys-return-their-camp

@Henkies, agree totally on Horse. I played against him in 96 when we beat DHS at DHS when all odds were against us. We were far the inferior side but derby days bring something special from a team of average us. We just wanted it more. I also played against Horse in Under21, never forget the DHS Old Boys having to have two in horses shoe, so two cans from his match boot…..hahah. Him and Dion also were great for DHS in the water, not the fastest but very powerful. Overall a good allround bloke and I hope he does well wherever he goes. My old mate Rudi Urbach (Horses Glenwood rival on the field and in the pool) I here is reffing polo around Durban, are you aware of that?

@Horsie, yes my nephew in law played in the Under14A goal, never played polo in his life so to lose by 8 against boys who have played for a couple of years bodes well. By grade 10 with decent coaching they will be on a par. He is a big lad so just needs to get swimming fit and learn the skills….

Ah Horse off to Westville then !! I have to take my hat off to Horse – the man who would still look scruffy even in a Hugo Boss suit. He’s served DHS so well as a pupil and a master. Horse played 1st team from 95 to 97. That DHS 95 team was awesome- lost to an unbeaten College side in the very last minutes of both games darn*it. Horse was a great Number 2 jumper despite being pretty short for a lock. Well done on your move Horse. I hope things go well for you at Westville but not too well.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: Prep boys making good at Kearsney, saw Josh Morse in the 2nds for Polo as well. Sam Swanepoel swam out for College 1sts today and looked completely at home.

The 2nd Formers look like a happy bunch, hellovu enthusiastic, getting really stuck into College life – making a big noise at the polo and basketball. Looks like College took most of the basketball in a reduced programme – they put what they could into the new indoor centre. Chatted to some of them, happy boys, at the end oif their first week.

U16A – Kearsney bowled out for about 60, College got the runs quickly before the rain came. U14’s well on top also bowling, same with U15s. Means little in the scheme of things because it will all be no result but it is a confidence booster for the College boys, especially the U16’s as three of their players are in the 1st team.

Yah. DHS also lost swimming and polo coach Andrew Stewart to WBHS but the effect wasn’t felt as Burt was brought back from Clifton while he was there for the swimming and Leroux was also brought from St Johns for polo when he was still there. This, I think helped a lot in continuity and the boys don’t have to be trying to get used to a new coach now since they’ve been there since 2012.

@HORSEFLY NO.1: LaMarque leaving left a huge hole in the structures at College which are very hard to fill in PMB for reasons already discussed ad nauseum here (and I don’t want them to be seen as excuses – good people succeed dispite obstacles, not due to their absence). Good recruiting and some providence have resolved that and we will see that come through very quickly. College left 5 first team goals in the pool today due to lack of experience, no patience. The 2nds just let it slip in the final chukka, were leading till then … so I see small tactical gaps to be closed, and a 300kg gorilla to be recruited to counter the Doops who are monstrous. Monstrous but not insurmountable – I reckon they can be countered tactically.

Cricket, other than the U16A, will show no result which will flatter Kearsney

They were unbeaten by winning all their games and therefore won the team award. I was surprized they also won the award for their off the field behaviour. @star: You still have not told me what the outcome was of the second match, and since you jumped to the Knights so quickly, I am assuming that it was a draw. The problem at Grey with cricket, is competition. Im not sure if things have changed, but until recently, GCB 1st, 2nds, 3rds and 4ths, all played in one league. The same applied to the U15s. As far as the Knights are concerned, too much outside influence. So, they are going through a dip, something the Dolphins are very familiar with.

If you don’t play for the Bulls now you have not got much hope…Give Marx 3 to 5 years to make a name for himself, if he hasn’t made the Lions senior side by then I would say no Bok future. @Bog, no issues with saying bismarck is the best in the world and a Grey Old Boy, but Adriaan Strauss is average at best. Schalk Brits, Chilliboy, Cooper and Burden are better…..just my opinion…..I’m allowed to have one. With regards to cricket, yes I batted 10 at school and was in many a long last wicket stand, one almost 3 hours when we saved the game due to light. However, those partnerships can last but rarely score many runs. Anyway, it was a draw with Glenwood probably having the better end of the draw. History will say a draw…….give us something we normally get hammered by Grey in other sports….

Big competition at hooker though – especially if Malcolm Marx fulfils his promise. Wandile Mjekevu is slowly resurrecting himself at the Sharks but with rugger anything can happen – hit and miss really. Promising cricketers are more likely to hit the big time. @Roger, yep Steven Jack for cricket and John Allan for rugby. Steve Atherton went to Pinetown. It’s been too long since we had a bok in both sports. Greg Nicol probably in hockey. Plenty of SA Sevens players though, Brian Shabangu and Warren Whiteley the lastest. KES are lucky to have Brian Habana and Graeme Smith to claim, great ambassadors for the school. Joe Van Niekerk too. Funnily enough John Allan’s son is going to Glenwood this year, maybe our next Bok, who knows. The u15A Glenwood team played four matches winning three and drawing one. The highlight of the tour was defeating Grey PE by 8 wickets and pushing Grey Bloem to a narrow draw which could have been a victory for Glenwood as Grey were 106/6 chasing 207 to win.

@BOG: I can read between the lines…you seem to diminish the fact that another school might have done well in the T20 format. That’s OK and your opinion, but that same school plays in the WP league in time cricket and 50 overs format and have done very well. In 2011 they were at Michaelmas as well and did not lose a game…So your little chirp about real cricket just sounds like sour grapes to me. Grey played in the same T20 competition and format and has yet to win the Knights title…Noord-Kaap keeps klapping them it seems!

@BoishaaiPa: Giving results is not exactly “shouting”. They play the opposition which they are given and if you read further you will notice that I mentioned Michaelmas. There they played stronger teams and won all their matches. And this was real cricket- not tap and giggle or French cricket. That explains why they are rated in the top 5 in SA

@BOG: A draw against Rondebosch is not a bad result, they have a good cricket pedigree and team. Wins against Woodridge and Framesby however is not much to shout about as they are not on the same par…at best they will play against our 2nd teams here in WP.

@Greenwood: With 9 Duzi’s then we have probably bumped into each other. My lightie has withdrawn this year so I am looking for a partner. Not interested in singles, looking for someone to steer a double. Not paddled since 2003, only done 3.

I can offer a spot in the College batch (8am start) for any silly bugger that volunteers ..!?!?

Gungets – funny you should say that – with the Duzi coming up next month Beet should create a Duzi post – this “Rugby ” blog has drifted into a general Schoolboy blog covering many aspects of High School which is cool & with College having its own batch in the Duzi this year which in itself is a really it would be a relavent post

for starters I myself have taken part in 9 Duzi’s ……

I see now why my questions have been ignored elsewhere. GCB, at the Grey High festival, drew with Rondebosch and beat both Woodridge College and Framesby. This of course, after winning all their matches at Michaelmas week last year !!!! Regarding age, I recall that Kepler Wessels played firsts when he was in std 6/gr8. (+- 14). In gr 9, he played FS schools and from gr 10, SA schools. He also captained SA schools in matric and I think, also in Gr11

@star: I just think it is a pity that the U16’s would be much weaker without all those boys – Mahmoud is the 4th. The U16’s have surprisingly not had a brilliant time through their past 2 years, so perhaps these boys (superb sportsmen all) will gain by going up. Dunno – I don’t see the 1sts as being the pinnacle, I like strength all the way through. Anyway, it does give some other kids a shot at the A side, pulls all the kids through. I can see them being joined by at least one kid next year.

In terms of rugby, I heard Brynard Stander, was playing 1st team at Westville when he was u16, and got a cap when he was still 15. If the kids talented let him play above his age group. Doop Brothers are another example of early bloomers. Craven Week at 16.

@ Gungets- My information( fairly reliable source) is that it is Tullis/Small and Getkate.
Luke Schlemmer was in from the end of Grade 9 I think. Westville had most probably one of their best years in 2012 and I believe that had something to do with backing talented individuals from early on.
@ Beet- refer above the Westville experience. However the key must be strong/sound management as confidence is such a key element in cricket and if the structures are not right then kids can be prematurely put to sword. There is also the question of playing with your mates and the enjoyment factor and how the more senior players deal with the young guns.
Westville U16s beat GW last year by 10 wickets partly because GW had promoted some of their young fast bowlers. By sacrificing an age group, these players are now going to add tremendous value upsteam. Will the U16 grouping be better off in terms of their confidence levels and guys that were therefore now exposed to higher level cricket. It is a fine balancing act. I feel that the U16s should be allowed to play in the 4th quarter which will be a win win situation allround.( That is if they get to play with the weather gods against us  )

My son played 1st cricket at College from U15. Had to eventually call it a day because of his back (opening bowler) but that would have happened anyway. If the kids mind is strong enough, go for it.

@star: Where did you get that information, and who are they. I think Tullis might be one. Pretty sure Mahmoud was U15 last year but played 1sts. How old was Luke Schlemmer when he played 1sts?

Saying U15 makes it sound like they are young but they are actually U16 this year, so just marginally early. Anyway, to my mind cricket, and to an extent hockey (we had an U15 player in the 1sts last year), there should not be any restrictions. I can think of a few of last years U15’s cricket that will do just fine if they are picked.

For cricket, if they are good enough they must play 1st. Look at Sachin Tendulkar and Darryl Cullinan etc, playing mens cricket at like 14.

I see that 3 College U15s( from last year) are going to the Ists. This raises an interesting debate about the risks and rewards of blooding young talent early as opposed to letting them progress more slowly through the age groups. Cricket does not have the same age restrictions as rugby.

@Grasshopper: Thinking now – you may be correct about them being day dogs. A guy I was at school with has them at his house all the time and he mentioned to me he may let them stay full time (mahala!!) during term time with his boy who is also starting this year. I still think it’s skumbs at the top on the left though so maybe Skinny has been taken in by this family.
