From Queen’s College
Queen’s College played against Pearson, at Graeme College Rugby Day, in Grahamstown this last weekend. The field was still wet underfoot after the previous week’s rain.
Queen’s College had the first opportunity to open the scoring in the opening minutes; however Foslag’s kick fell just short of the target. This led to a sustained period of attack in the Pearson half, with a try scoring opportunity that went begging.
The first points of the game were scored by Pearson after a kick was charged down, and the ball fell into the hands of the Pearson number 13 who scored under the posts. The try was converted and Pearson led 7-0.
Queen’s after the restart were awarded a penalty which was converted by Van Heerden to open the scoring. This seemed to motivate the Queenians and Du Randt went crashing over for his teams opening try. The conversion was kicked by Van Heerden. Du Randt scored the second try for Queen’s after some patient attack from the team, which saw some good interplay between the forwards and the backs. Van Heerden added the extra two points, and the score was 17-7 in Queen’s favour.
In the second half Queen’s upped the intensity and the third try for Queen’s was scored after a good lineout, which saw Foslag ghost through the defensive line and feed Sotyelelwa who scored under the posts. The try was converted by Van Heerden. From the restart, Queen’s secured the ball and after some enterprising play sent Sotyelelwa crashing over for his second try of the game within a minute. The conversion was missed by Van Heerden.
Queen’s captain, Oranje, scored the 5th try for his team after some good interplay between the forwards and backs. The nuggetty half back made a sniping run and beat several defenders to cross the white wash. The final score of the match was from Penxe who finished off what can only be described as a team try after the majority of team handled the ball in a sweeping move that started on the Queen’s 5m line. Tshefuta added the extra two points. The final score was 41-7 in Queen’s Colleges favour.
Although Queen’s won the match comfortably in the end ,Pearson who are a well coached team with lots of talent, had some very exciting passages of play and will bounce back to be very competitive unit this year.
