Glenwood & Westville debutants: Sharks u19/u21

Marné Coetzee (Glenwood 2012) and Duan Coertzen (Westville 2010) will make their debuts against the Leopards for the Sharks under-19 and under-21 teams respectively. The inclusion of both players is as a result of injuries.

Marne steps in at tighthead prop in place of the reliable Richard Palframan (the son of former Proteas wicketkeeper Steve). It’s a very good opportunity for the Glenwood captain to cement a spot in the squad of 23 for the remainder of the season. The fact that he has been promoted to the starting line-up ahead of regular back-up John-Hubert Meyer, suggests that the coaching staff have a lot of confidence in Marne’s ability to deliver at a level one up from schoolboy rugby.

Duan was a hooker that captured attention with good performances during his final year at Westville in 2010. However with a birthday falling on 17 December 1991, he just just missed out on being classified as under-18 by two or so weeks back then and as a result did not play KZN schools representative rugby. His promotion to the Sharks under-21 starting XV has its origins at Bok level where Bismarck du Plessis pick up a serious injury in the Argentina test last Saturday. This resulted in Craig Burden being called up to the national squad, creating opportunities for several hookers including Coertzen to move up the Sharks ladder. Since the Sharks under-21’s did not have a specialist hooker on the bench to begin with, Duan was fortunate enough to hop straight into the starting line-up.

Good luck to both youngsters. The Leopards have good junior teams thanks to their association with Pukke (North West University).

@Greenhopper: I haven’t seen Dalton playing club so I’m not sure. He is u20 this year. If he was u19, I’m sure the Sharks u19s would have used him. He is just the sort of physical player they need.

@ greenhopper, like i said earlier i dont know the history but have read about it and i felt very sorry for him, seemed like he was dragged into contraversey, but he looked at home in this higher level, looked better than what i have watched sofar this year at the sharks,ok it was only his first game so time will tell,i was happy for him

@QC86: I am sorry I wasn’t able to see this game, and see Marne Play, i have been critical of him during the year, mostly for the mercenary approach to the school rugby and GW indifference to loyalty and boys existing in the school . His general Play IHMO, and limited to watching on the school, fields was pretty average, he was spectacular in the scrumming department and 18 years gave him a hard time, in terms of carrying the ball he was fairly effective and the majority of the time crossed the advantage line nicely and ensure feedback ball nicely. I didn’t think he was an effectively leader for the team this year and was a bit of an outsider , but let’s see how he progresses this year , a lot like Morne Steyn, liked him last year , don’t think he fits in this year

@beet,i dont think bokkie is injured,Brendons place kicking cant be worse than robs, but if rob plays scrummy then at least they can get their money back, and robs decision making at 10 is not good at all,at centre that Chieza guy made an impact on saturday, rob had a few minutes at scrumhalf on saturday and did not look to bad, actually looked quite at home there

@QC86: Is Bokkkie Carstens also injured at the moment. I haven’t seen Rob at scrumhalf for a while. He has a strong pass and a good base kick but not sure about his speed or decision making at 9. The Sharks can also call on Cameron Wright a schoolboy #9 from Hilton College. He is really good. Brendon Cope is a really good player. Place kicking aside, he has all the attributes to be a good attacking flyhalf. If he had played behind a stronger pack at DHS, he would have got a lot more attention from scouts. Unfortunately at the Sharks a contract still counts for too much. They treat it far above form. What about Rob at inside centre?

i heard Stefan Ungerer had a minor op on his knee yesterday, drained some fluid, maybe that opens the door for Cope to start,he is a good player, came on against the Leopards and made an instant difference to our backline, alot quicker and gave the backline more space, rob at scrumhalf?,our Japanese wing was bad under the high ball, let 4 of them bounce, tried to trap them with his foot, did not look good and once again our backline tackling was shocking, alot of jersey grabbing which lead to line breaks. At halftime we had conceded 19 turnovers, main reason been trying to pass in the tackle,we were taught to pass before or not at all, just basics and that is what the Leopards did very well

Well done Marne! Maybe not having the pressure he had at Glenwood has allowed him freedom to play as he wants. Glad he did well…

@QC86: Good for Allan. He is a quality player with a great attitude and a lot of healthy competition in the u21s right now. Just wish he could put on some KGs but there’s no rush for props who generally mature a little later than in most other possies.

BTW the Leopards coach also gave Marne the thumbs up for his performance on Sat.

@beet,that they did, in the last 10 min,i was very impressed with the Leopards u19 and u21s they played nice constructive rugby,i have never been to potch before, must say it was a lekka trip,Alan Dell had a good game for the u21s,he did alot of work in the loose, plus the winning try,he just finished off the try but he was at the right place at the right time,in the heat,in the dying moments of the game, tells you something about fresh legs

@Greenhopper: The season started brightly enough with 2 wins but those turned out to be against the 2 bottom teams and now we have lost 4 in a row and 2 were at home. The 2 loses, even the FS games which was competitive up to 50mins were interesting games to watch but we desperately need to find a winning formula now.

@QC86: Like you say, it was crazy hot + altitude for the first time in 2012. Surely the coach should have looked at rotation earlier on.

Funny thing is the Leopards coach told me on Thurs last week that he expected a tight 1st half and that in the 2nd half they were going to run us “stukkend”. He reminded me of this on Sat evening :(

@beet,i took careful note of his scrumming,i dont know much about him so i was very interested in his play, and he did very well, only one person to blame as to the u19s predicament, the coach, beet it was 32 degrees in potch while they were playing[mid day}at altitude, first forwards replacement was made in the 59th minute and that was Marne who was having a blinder????,the forwards were finished, his replacements seem to be pre determined and in the same order every game???bulls game 18 0 lead and end up losing, 2 of the forwards replacements not used and one put on with 4 min left??saturday the same, one not used and alot shoved on with minutes left and the game gone,it was only 6 0 at half time and the sharks scored right after the re start 6 5??? my boet was watching the game with me and just before halftime he said to me he thought the sharks would win, they just ran out of steam,we could see it,not the coaching staff???you got 5 forward reserves why not use them, sorry i am ranting but so mad because that is not a bad side, one point loss to the lions and bulls the log could have looked very different with some smart moves from the powers that be

@QC86: I’m happy to hear that Marne did so well vs the Leopards. I was worried that he would struggle in the scrums. In terms of open play he has few rivals at prop. He is a tiredless carrier and his workrate is extremely high.

Sharks u19s in real trouble now.

Marne had a very good game, and i was so happy for him,i have read all the comments about his move down to durban, and they must have an influence on him mostly bad i think, but he was my man of the match, on the sharks side,he scrummed very well and carried alot of ball up never made any mistakes, good all round performance, well done Marne

“Errol Flyn” for those who dont know was an actor many years ago the in the fifties I think, a true ladies man who was reputed to very well endowed – with greased hair slicked back and a large droopy mousthache

@Grasshopper: Other way around. Errol mastered his rugga at Kearsney where he played 1st team in 1989. He was u17 in 6th Form at KC so after he matriculated he went and repeated matric at SCC (1 year). Not that the age mattered back then as there were no restrictions on u19s playing at Craven Week. In fact it was fairly common for kids to repeat matric or go to post-matric at HC or MHS. Kearsney did not have PM when I was there.

@Beet, so Kearsney are claiming Etienne Fynn too. Was he not only there a year and did most of his schooling at St Charles? He is listed as a St Charles Bok…

@boxkick: Sorry you’re right, its Etienne to the public at large. He used to go to my school and we all called him “Errol” back then. True story, ask him when you see him again. KCOB will vouch for me :)

@Greenhopper: The Sharks begged Sean to be forwards coach for the u21s this year coz he is such a good technical coach. He however turned them down. His intention is to focus more on prepping Glenwood for 2013. I think he is still an u21 forwards consultant, a role the Sharks created so that they didn’t lose his services altogether. Whether people accept it or not, the Sharks still regard him as a valuable coach.

@Greenhopper: None of the u19 games are on TV this year but SS have been really good at covering u21s.

Etienne (Errol) Fynn is the u19 coach for this year. Deon Keyser is his assistant.

u21s are still coached by Sean Everitt
