Glenwood u16 player continues to impress

Just one week after putting in a very inspiring performance against College on Goldstones, Glenwood’s Morné Joubert picked up the Player of the Tournament award at the conclusion of the Durban leg of the @lantic 7s, held at Glenwood on 18 August 2012.

Joubert featured in the Glenwood under-16A team this year and went to Grant Khomo Week with the Kwazulu-Natal side. He is also believed to be one of only four KZN players picked for the SA under-16 High Performance Squad, which is yet to be formally released.

After making a brief 1st XV appearance against Affies in Pretoria, Joubert was drafted into the Glenwood main team to take on College at the last moment. Playing at fullback, he produced a performance fitting of a national under-18 player on that occasion. The future really looks bright for this talented youngster with  speed, skills and a good rugby brain.

@Grasshopper: you are so right, the ablity to have core strenght, quick twitch muscles and good recovery from sprints around teh park during the game, bleep test, is the way forward

@Cyndi, you spot on there. SA Rugby and schools level need to focus on skills and speed. Pure muscle building gym is not what is required for rugby, look at Pierre Spies, absolutely useless. He is strong in the gym but always knocked back on the field. Exercises like clean and jerk, lunges and squads are best. Also, bleep test sprints, core stability and fitness….

as we can all see , the boks where less than impressive over the weekend, size got us now where, Kegan and Richie , smaller quicker , a combination of size and speed for me works better than lumbering size, we need to change the way we look at this and put better perspective and not be seduced by size

There is a lot of emphasis on the size of players now. Generally boys are a lot bigger than they were 10 to 20 years ago and this is not all to be blamed on gym. Many boys are wearing size 12/13 shoes or even bigger. This is a pain as most rugby socks and boots only go to a size 10. Some brands carry up to a 12 but once there, it is time to import of pay a few thousand for specialist brands.
I have always found it interesting to read the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival programme and see the age, weight and heights of many of these players.

@boxkick: I was kidding boet, I just cannot believe how big these okes are. I was a lock at school at 1.85m and 75kg (Grade 11 – injury stopped me playing for the matric year). Granted that gym, supplements and the rest were unheard of. Even at practise (remember I was nowhere near 1st team) we did about 20 push ups and that was it. Even at club level I was considered pretty ok for size. Robert du Preez changed everything when he was scrumhalf at 1.88m and 95kg.

@ boxkick- I think the point I was originally trying to make was that his size(at this stage) was not excessive for a Grade 10 kid who has made the HP squad. This is good because as you say he can only get bigger to add to what must be a commendable skills set. My point of reference is the Westville U15A team where there are several backline players over 75 kgs.

@Gungets Tuft:  I actually need to update that SA Sch well. I contacted Klofies coz I couldn’t believe Justin Philips is still u16. They confirmed he is u17. The SARugby database used as source is incorrect.

6foot and 75kg for a backline player at Under15 level is pretty big in my eyes. No need for anymore massive weight gain except natural weight gain. If he is 6foot1 and 85kg by matric he will be perfect size. Focus on speed work and skills and this kid will go far. Good luck boytjie!

@Greenwood: Tom came across as the model Glenwood student for all the reasons mentioned above but if he told Glenwood boys he was a victim, it sounds like one lie just to cover up another. I think at some point a few years back he was presented with an opportunity to leave behind a life of poverty (at least for most of the year), gloomy future prospects, get himself a good education, free wholesome meals and comfortable accommodation and he seized it with both hands and made the most of it.

For all we know he’s not the first one guy to try this either, just one of the first to get caught.

@Greenwood: agree that GW was a victim. Tom (let’s just use that name for simplicity cos it wasn’t even his real name) knew full well what he was up to so I have no sympathy for him. The is always an honest path to follow. I for one am very sorry that that whole episode ended the way it did – with 3 boys and 2 schools carrying the can for the whole saga. There were others that were swept under the mat. I also think we should have uncovered who the agents were behind the whole saga but I have a feeling they would be quite high-up and therefore well protected.

Tom was a nice guy – polite , friendly & good sense of humour – played cricket with the lightie

he was seen in civies at GWD that weekend at a match he was to have captained looking most depressed

by the sound of it he (Tom) and Glenwood were victims of deceite and one can only try and imagine how he feels

when he left the school I was told he went straight to Dept of Home affairs

I hear he is back in the Transkei

@Greenwood: I’m sure a director could make a very moving film about Tom and Payi as well. They both seemed like genuine good guys and one can only imagine the kind of bleak futures they must have faced 4-5 years ago that pursuaded them to try and turn back the clock and start school all over again when they were nearly thru with it. I wonder where they are now and what they are doing?

on the subject of removing names from honours boards

most bloggers may have seen the “Hansie” movie – one quite emotional part was when the Headmaster went before the whole school (Grey College) in assembly and asked the kids whether Hansies’ name should be removed from the Honours board – he left the hall and all the kids started singing (or chanting) something like “we want Hansie” – stirring stuff -needles to say Hansies name remains

Yep. That’s right. Have the feelingg he’s going to take up cricket as his career bbut I’m not too sure. He scores many tries too, squeezing through the huge hands of all these gym freaks quite often.

This Tedder boy is he the No10 from Kearsney ? if so he will go a long way – also grade 10 – slightly built but such good hands – took a couple of big hits in the GwD -Kearsney game – got up shook himself and carried on as if nothing had happened

Speaking of honours boards – I trust that ‘his’ name has been removed? I didn’t look this weekend when I was at the school but noticed it when I was there earlier in the year.

@Beet, as long as they don’t look at dodgy schools from the Eastern Cape and ensure full checks are down before they are enrolled. Glenwood now have to clean up our honours baords…

@Star, Yes it is and a feeder school to Waterkloof. Glenwood must be a link to the area, because that is where Marne came from. Maybe they gave a bursary to one kid a few years ago and since have attracted boys down to KZN. So much competition for kids in KZN with all the schools giving crazy bursaries, Glenwood have spread the net further. Good on them…

I was checking his stats( 1.82m and 75kg). He seems to be a bit of a Tedder type player where skills are more important than brawn. He also comes from Elanduspark. Where the heck is that?

Morne is in my sons class @ GWD

What is not known is that in the drawn game at College Morne had played a full U16 game before being told he was playing 1st team – 10 minutes before 1st team game – he did pretty well then
