The Western Province Rugby Institute (WPRI) recently held an opening function to welcome this year’s batch of aspiring professionals to their world class facility in Stellenbosch. Judging by the talent they managed to secure, there is every chance that a WP under-19 team coming out of this group could contain as much skill and potential as the successful WP under-19 team of 2010. Not only did that 2010 go on to win the under-19 Currie Cup that year, in the short space of time since then it produced three run-on Springboks in Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi and Frans Malherbe, as well as a touring Bok in Scarra Ntubeni. In addition to these four, provincial caps have also gone the way of Nizaam Carr, Damian de Allende, Wilhelm van der Sluys, Michael van der Spuy and Ulrich Beyers (Blue Bulls) while Sam Lane (Waratahs) has played for Australian outfit the Reds in Super Rugby. With two major goals of any rugby institution or academy anywhere being to develop good players for the senior team and create a winning culture along the way, the WPRI scored 10 out of 10 with that amazing group and could achieve this double figure once again starting in 2014. Time will tell.

@Boom: He was listed as a Craven Week reserve.
Ryan Oosthuizen was also selected but did not play at Craven Week due to injury.
Maxwane didnt play Craven Week. He was left out and only made the academy side. Straight after the academy week he was made offers by 3 of the unions and chose WP. Keep an eye on him.
1ste span:
Wian van Zyl 75 nie uit nie
Wen met 119 lopies
Stokkies Hanekom 39 Taigh Schoor 36 Pieter Borchards 2/10
Interskole is 9 Maart, gaan beslis ons krieket manne gaan ondersteun.
@BOG: Nee Bog Shirley het tieties, mind you Arthur ook maar syne is net vol hare en hang nie so nie. Mag ek kom kuier?
@BOG: Bog ek dink ek moet vir ‘n rukkie by jou kom kuier.
@beet: Very true Beet – I have been going on about this and some people tend to look past that. As I have said – basics (i.e scrummaging and lineout throws) first and foremost and then the work on the “outside”. A hooker has to be able to do a lot of work in the loose nowadays but without neglecting his basics
Indien dit so is, gaan hy sukkel.
@BoishaaiPa: One of the Bulls scouts told me last year that amongst his biggest headaches was finding hookers that could throw a ball in properly.
Guys have the passion, the focus, the dimensions, the fitness to play at a provincial age-group level but fall badly short in specialised skills required to play a particular position well
@Tjoppa: 100% Tjoppa.
@BuffelsCM: Wanneer gaan iemand luister. Loskop en Vaskop is so ver verwyder van mekaar as Slot en Senter behalwe as jy natuurlik Matfield is.
@BlueHoops: Great summary.
Willemse will have to improve his lineout work if he wants to stake a claim higher up in Province. BTW there aren’t many hookers around (in Province) that can feed a lineout consistently well.
@BlueHoops: End of 2012 the following players besides Tim Swiel all trained with the Stormers from the 2012 u/19 group as well…Fred Kirsten, Jean Kleyn, JP Lewis, Cheslin Kolby, Pat Howard…
Skool laaities soos hy wat been there, done that is dit nogals nie maklik nie.
@Beet: I agree on your comments about Sage, I have seen him play a number of games this year and although he has size and is a good player, to me Ryan i s more dynamic and has far more gas – if he did not get injured, I would have been more than happy to see him in the SA Schools team.
I hope Jarryd does well as he is a nice guy, but to me, he just lacks that little bit of pace that makes all the difference.
Time will tell – but watch out for Ryan, he is hard, quick and has fantastic distribution – classic centre
@BlueHoops: Well done on an insightful and comprehensive post.
There seems to be enough cover available in most positions as you pointed out, but I am still concerned about the lack of depth in the prop position with only van Wyk in the 2014 intake with potential to take the step up in future, in my opinion. I have little faith in some of the other names you mentioned, and even less so for the 2014 intake in this position. Basson was a bad miss, and even I will now admit, so was du Toit. The hooker position is of similar concern to me, and Arno van Wyk would have been handy, explosive, accurate and wasted on the Bulls bench. Any news on Fred Kirsten, or is it overs?
Definite opportunity for a 9 to stake a claim, Phillips certainly has the pedigree, Nel was brilliant for Gym last year, but once again the loss of Goddard to the Cheetahs was a major oversight IMO.
Like Beet, I also wonder what will happen to Uys and if/how he will feature.
@BlueHoops: Wow that was great. Maybe I should turn it into a blog on its own BlueHoops.
I must say I watched Sage at Craven Week and again in a game vs the Sharks u19s and he is decent but he came nowhere near impressing me as much as Ryan Oosthuizen from Gimmies did. But Jarryd is highly rated down there in the Cape and a bit like Jonny Kotze he has the size to be fast-tracked to u21 if there is a need.
Guys like Howard and K van Wyk really can’t afford to be branded as wings esp in WP. It will cut short their local careers. Both desperately need to make a name for themselves at centre. I’d also like to see how de Allende plays at 13. He’s not really the kind of 12 synonymous with WP rugby. I always think of a good decision-maker ball player with top distribution skills in that role – kind of like what Daniel Doop and Oosthuizen have to offer, altho they have a way to go before they compete for senior spots
Super opportunities to go far exist for any young scrummy who puts up his hand now. SA looks short of quality in this department. Phillips is the real deal.
I’m surprised that no mention has been made of Monnas prop Frans van Wyk. A big boy who surely would have put his hand up for SA Schools had he been fit for Craven Week. I think plenty of RUs were after his signature and word coming thru is that WP preferred offering him a big contract to the impressive Thomas du Toit (Sharks) so top dollar must have been paid for van Wyk
Schickerling looks like a star in the making but Province have done very well to get those 3 young locks already in the system to the top of their game and to think Wilhelm vdS could also come back in the not too distant future. I also wonder what the future holds in store for Jan Uys???
Eight of these lads trained with the Stormers in the off-season. A clear indication of how highly this group is rated and who is at the fore-front of the unions minds.
Remember Notshe trained with the Stormers as he finished school although he turned 19 in the year. The year before Tim Swiel trained with the Stormers.
The 8 were.
EW Viljoen
Grant Hermanus
Jarryd Sage
Daniel du Plessis
Justin Phillips
Rikus Bothma
Jacques Vermeulen
JD Schickerling
* Note when Swiel left for the Sharks they did mention Brandon Thompson though in the system.Last years SA Schools fly-half who was poached from Pumas (Ermelo).
Their pathways
EW Viljoen (GREY BLOEM) – Fullback
2011: Leyds off to the Force & Craig Barry not contracted to WP
2012: Kolbe (SENIOR), Janco Gunther (used as reserve wing for 21s)
2013: Chris Smith & Jason Worrall (played fly-half for 19s)
*With Taute, Aplon, Kolbe capable of playing fullback in the senior team there looks to be decent cover in the seniors for now. Then there is the young fly-half Ryno Eksteen who has impressed Coetzee in pre-season and they are looking at him at fullback.
Grant Hermanus (PAARL GYM)
With Grant still being at school I think we will look at him for next season. Can play in the back 3 and can kick for polls.
With centres van Wyk and Howard pushed to the wing they are the one’s moving up to the seniors along with Devon Williams (aka road runner). They all 2011. 2012 has someone like JP Lewis.
Daniel du Plessis (12) (Paul Roos) & Jarryd Sage (13) (Wynberg) – CENTRES
2011: Kobus Van Wyk (12) & Pat Howard (13)
2012: Kyle Lombard (12) & Johnny Kotze (13)
2013: Michal Laznar & schoolboy Jarryd Sage (13)
*I’m really excited about the du Plessis and Sage combination. 2013 centres are a write off with the 2011 & 2012 centres all contracted to WP. van Wyk and Howard are trying to be eased in as wings for now with the seniors. With Jean retiring soon and question marks over de Jongh I reckon these 2 will be WP’s future along with de Allende at centre.
Justin Phillips – (WATERKLOOF) – Scrumhalf
Two years in a row the SA Schools scrumhalf says it all.
2011: Godlen Masmila
2012: Jean Nel
2013: Pieter Schoonraad
Will be interesting too see how much he is fast tracked because current seniors haven’t grabbed their opportunities consistently enough yet.
Rickus Botham (8th-man) & Jacques Vermuelen (Flank) – both (PAARL GYM)
Both have big futures. Weigh over 100kgs already and have dynamic games.
If I had to choose a back 3 from u19s upwards to u21s from last season it would be the back 3 for the u21s last season.
So to me these two along with Rayn Smid, Sikhumbuzo Notshe and Josh Katzen are potential loose-forwards for WP and Stormers.
JD Schickerling (PAARL GYM) – Lock
SA Schools 2 years in a row even with injury the 2nd time round he was chosen for the enlarged squad.
Like Sage was playing WP u19 last season.
The union has been criticized for losing Quinn Roux but when you have young locks like Eben Etzebeth, Ruan Botha, Gerbrandt Grobler & Jean Kleyn you probably could let one slip through the net.
If you combine the above with positons like the young props in the senior set-up like Kitshoff, Malherbe, Kebble and young Entienne Swanepoel it looks covered there. Then at Hooker you would probably say Ntubeni and Mike Willemse are the future there.
@Muzi: Are you going to be there on Monday?
@Tjoppa:
@Muzi: No those are the Boons.
@Tjoppa:
“Apparently Nollis and his goons still in control.”…..Xander…Frans Ludeke…Werner….Pine Pienaar…..are those the goons you’re talking about….
@Muzi: I have not seen him play but according to my big tjom he has hands, speed and vision BUT needs a lot of work. Talent galore. But according to a coach at TUKS nobody interested and said he must be dropped as they are not interested in developing.
But Muzi it seems al not ok at TUKS camp. Pote a very unhappy chappie as he is told how to coach a team he did not pick. Apparently Nollis and his goons still in control. Both Tuks teams are handed down from the top. Players appear on Thursday from nowhere etc etc etc. Finish and Klaar.
But am going on Monday to watch. You now me if there is skinner I am there.
@Tjoppa:
hmmm haven’t heard about him if those two Bulls poachers were awake perhaps we could offer him a long term contract….problem is these days the Bulls look for quick fixes….Waylon murray springs to mind…amazing to think he has a Bulls contract….rubbish player.
@BoishaaiPa: Great to hear !!
@BuffelsCM: Update on Grant Hermanus…Apparently our comments are read by more than just the locals!..Grant Hermanus’s agent phoned me this morning to confirm that he did sign in fact with WP!..So he is staying in the Cape! He will join the WP Institute over the July Holidays and if chosen play a few games during the holidays for WP u/19 before going back to finish his school season. After that he will again join the pratice sessions at the WPI.
@Muzi: Muzi apparently an exciting centre played for TUKS this weekend @12. Do you have any details. The feeling towards this boy is he needs development and Tuks is not in the business of developing players. He played for their 2nd team. Apparently very exciting player with bundles of raw talent. Would be a shame to lose a player like that.
@PaarlBok:
Christopher Bosch made the right move to Boland at least he will get enough game time….you seem to forget the Bulls have Jan Serfontein…Rohan Janse Van Rensburg even Burger Ondendaal as options at inside centre……
@BoishaaiPa:
Grant Hermanus has signed for the Bulls?!?!…If that’s true and confirmed then you sir have certainly made my morning.
@beet: While the 2012 was good, the 2013 crop did not produce the goods. Fortunately as Boishaaipa has stated, quite a few players will still be available for WP U/21. They won’t be able to rely on too few of last year’s U/19 crop.
Another plus of this strong (current) U/19 intake, is the fact that a number of them will play for the U/21 side while still U/20 next year. That will definitely add some strength to the side.
I’d really like to see what the likes of Vermeulen, Bothma and Schikerling can do after some proper conditioning. This obviously applies to all the players.
Ek sien van Wyk se sentermaat Christopher Bosch is by Boland.
Daar is nog n klein Stokkies oppad by Gim.
@BoishaaiPa: We are on the same wavelength. Hanekom is one of my favourites to watch. I wish the Sharks could have signed him. He is a ballplayer with skills and is always trying to make things happen for those around him. Hopefully he has a good season.
@beet: Correct!..That 2008 team was dynamite as well. All of them becoming regulars in S15 teams, except perhaps Poolman…Hanekom is only now coming through for Lions after he was mostly injured during his varsity cup days for Maties. He had some lean times of late, but I think he might be one of the Lions players of the S15 this season. He is pure class and a classic centre. At 1.93 and 101Kg’s he is almost the ideal modern centre. I will stick my neck out and believe that his rugby pedigree will kick in this season and we will see a different Hanekom in the Lions setup and be a serious contender for higher honours at centre.
@BoishaaiPa: Also the team of 2008 with the backs likes of Sadie, JJ Engelbrecht, Gary v Aswegen, Groom, Schreuder, Poolman, Stokkies Hanekom.
@BoishaaiPa: Agreed. I think 2012 led by Freddie Kirsten should be remembered as one of the biggest surprise package teams in recent years. On paper they probably should have struggled to make the u19 playoffs. On the field they were so united as a team, they were virtually impossible to stop. They beat the Xander dream team three times
On paper, this is one hell of a squad of players.
Only issue I have, is they seem a bit over-loaded in certain positions, ie 4 scrumhalves
It is clear a few of these boys will either vanish or have to move provinces in the next 2 years
Beet, The 2012 WP u/19 team wasnt too shabby either. With only one SA Schools rep they also won the u/19 CC and produced 3 Blitsbokke in Justin Geduld, Werner Kok and Cheslin Kolby. Many of them went on and represented WP u/21 in 2013 who also won the CC. Most of them still available for WP u/21 in 2014…Good crop of youngsters coming through!
@@Djou: No. Pieter’s father is Leon. Not family as far as I know. He and his brother ( grade 11) were raised in Northern Subs. Pieter was mostly an athlete. SA colours for sprinting etc. Didn’t get that many chances in Roos but a good player. 7 Locks????To be on the safe side I suppose…………..
JD probably going straight to u21 side and maybe they want to move one of the others to blind side. Didnt check the rest of the positions, they well balanced?
@Koos Roos: How many Pieter Rossouw wings are their in WP? Any relation to the Springbok?
But another question? Why 7 locks? Isn’t it a bit too much?
Glad to see so many of that Paarl Gym boys stayed. Rikus and Vermeulen will go far. Ryan too. Watch out for Christo v d Merwe. Namibia boytjie. Known as Klip. Very good reason I hear. Best of luck to them.
