Bulls scout on early business trip to the Cape

Blue Bulls scout Xander Janse van Rensburg, who is known to travel the length and breadth of South Africa during the school rugby season in search of talent to sign up for the Loftus based team and the University of Pretoria, is in the Western Cape at the moment. Since the local school season is still weeks away from kicking off, his much earlier than anticipated trip down south has a number of loyal Province officials feeling a bit uncomfortable. Ever since the Bulls adopted Heyneke Meyer’s major recruitment plan of action aimed at keeping the Bulls on the top of the Super Rugby table, Janse van Rensburg has sprung to the fore big time and snapped up some prominent youngsters from right under the noses of their home unions. The Boland has become a happy hunting ground for the Bulls in recent times with talent seemingly around every street corner in the region. They have even struck gold in Paarl in 2012 with the signing of Handre Pollard, the unofficial best school player of that year.

I have heard from some trustworthy people in the rugby industry that the ethics which Mr Janse van Rensburg displays in signing black and coloured schoolboy players leaves much to be desired for and that some players being done in and have been approached by journalists to put forward all the facts of the devious ways and means that this person displays in collecting signatures and the extent to which Xander will go to pick up previously disadvantaged kids for as cheap as possible. This also brings to mind the article that appeared in the papers 2 years ago when Xander wanted to off load coloured andblack players at Waterkloof and the then new headmaster of Klofies called in Xander which coincidentally was an old boy of Waterkloof and told him there is more to life for young boys than to be abused to make the Blue Bulls failed developement program looked better with especially the required number of quota players being much more competitive for the Blue Bulls representative age group provincial rugby sides!.Good on you Mr.Headmaster!Where there is smoke there is fire and it looks like this Xander guy is never to far away from incidents that stinks! Apparently he works very close with Garsfontein High School and uses them to offload black and coloured players with the promise of a Blue Bull contract after school as well as a reserved spot in the Blue Bull Grant Khomo or Craven Week side.Hell this way of recruiting 16 year old sends shivers down my spine! I wonder if Barend van Graan the Bulls CEO are aware of Xander modus operandi and his unethical ways or is it a matter of turning his eyes another side because of this win at all costs at all times attitude the Bulls have.I wonder if Muzi knows about these articles that the papers want to publish and what SARU will say about black and coloured schoolboy rugby players being short changed by the Bulls recruiters.

@Boet: Ek vra plegtig om verskoning, my inligting betreffende Bellville was dan foutief en my bron sal streng aangespreek word.

@rugbyfan: Nothing that a bit of salmonella cannot sort out  Must say that I don’t have that big a problem with the WC players being signed elsewhere, as the powers that be down here have been notoriously poor in recognizing and selecting talent in the past (just look at the yearly CW selections for starters). Over the past 20 years I have been fortunate enough to see most of the premier A, B and even C schools play over the course of each season, and the amount of brilliant players that slip through the net every year down here is just amazing.

What I am excited about though, is the collective drive by various northern suburbs schools over the past 2 – 3 years to retain and develop their local talent in areas that have been the traditional feeder areas for the 2 Paarl powerhouses and PRG. Full bursaries are on the increase and various infrastructure upgrades are in progress as local businesses are re-directing their funds to local schools and I for one hope that these investments pay dividends in the near future.

@BOG: Almost, but not quite, and yet their combined size is still smaller than Botshabelo, which apparently now runs all the way to Thaba Nchu 8-O
