KZN needs to start thinking outside the box

Talking schoolboy rugby in KZN, there’s belief amongst school officials that change is needed and in some cases it’s believed to be way overdue.

The AGM for high schools which takes place on Saturday 07 November 2016, is the time and place for school representatives who feel this way to come out, say exactly what’s bugging them about the current systems and/or personnel and then use their vote to help bring about meaningful change. In other words, lay their cards on the table so that everyone knows exactly where they stand and then at least have the comfort of leaving the meeting knowing that even if they did not succeed, they at least tried to effect change. For those who are dead set on clinging to politics, this is pointless. What will it really achieve. If schools truly want to see improve, they need to drop all other agendas and use the AGM to identify and back those candidates who are willing to put school rugby in the province first. KZN needs to put leaders with good ideas in leadership roles now!

The KZN Executive is granted the power to oversee things such as the choice of selectors and coaches for the youth weeks, so it’s frightening to think that schools would not want to actively participate in this decision-making process. Expanding the Executive to guarantee seats for all the major schools contributing to rugby in the province is certainly an option that would promote a greater involvement in steering KZN schoolboy rugby in a suitable direction.

Set rotation of membership to keep it from becoming stale or labelled as an “Old Boys Club” should be considered as it would stimulate it would open the door for new officials and new ideas.

With only a few Exec places up for grabs, candidates to avoid voting for should include:
*Yes-men
*Unmotivated individuals
*Clueless or outdated rugby ideas persons
* Those so far removed from the day to day running of schoolboy rugby that its almost impossible for them to make a meaningful contribution
*Anyone who has no other intention but to promote the interests of his own school above all else
There are probably other unfavourable characteristics to be on the look out for.

Officially the following nominations have been received for the 2016 KZNHRA executive.

Chairman: N Ingle
Secretary: D Moodley
Additional members:
T Richter
G Bell
AD Pinheiro
C Luman
R Köhne
G Pyoos
P Mnikathi
A Van Wyk
SC Ngcongo

@the professor: Excellent – that’s progress. We’re nearly there. If you could be so kind as to fill in the blanks as to why you say that. Filling in these blanks would remove the obviously incorrect impression that this is a personal attack rather than a considered, unbiased opinion.

*Yes-men (Remember that this applies to a “yes man” who will simply carry out the orders of the committee chairman, or the majority)

    .

*Clueless or outdated rugby ideas persons (Probably someone who has never played rugby, or is no longer qualified to comment on it. Someone that currently coaches and referee’s rugby might not fall into this bracket. We would definitely exclude someone who might have coached and administered rugby in a forward looking rugby country, or have a post-graduate diploma in Sports Management from a New Zealand University)

*Anyone who has no other intention but to promote the interests of his own school above all else (Definitely exclude anyone who sits on the committee that advises the South African Traditional schools on sport, particularly rugby – including the recruitment and poaching issues. Wouldn’t want anyone without close ties to the major traditional schools in South Africa)

@the professor: Oh, good, that clears up everything then.

I’m quite new around here, so help me out, I don’t know the names on the list, but Google reveals the Luman is the headmaster of Maritzburg College, so let’s assume that it’s him you have an issue with. Help out with the 3 *’s you would allocate there please. There are 5 to pick from, simple task.

The nomination of a certain headmaster cannot be for real surely? It would seem that he may tick at least 3 to 4 of the *’s mentioned above……
