WP – Ploegie’s WP u18 Country and WP u18 City teams for 2015

One of the biggest Craven Week questions every years is why does Western Province not have two representative teams. For many it seems like a logical step, which if anything would cater for the higher concentration of talent in their region and improve the quality on offer at Craven Week. Upon request, Ploegskaar was kind enough to put together his form choices for WP Country and WP City Craven Week teams. As expected both teams look very strong.

1 M Salie Paul Roos 1 M Joubert Bellville

28 May 2015 – final form team

I personally think that the WP selectors have missed a trick by not including the Wynberg scrumhalf Kannemeyer. He is playing in a very young Wynberg side but he has outplayed every single scrumhalf he has come up against. Awesome talent, a phenomenal reader of a game that reminds me of a young Fourie du Preez that can tackle.

@ JJ – like myself & others said about a month ago, that game at Newlands means very very little & today showed the gulf between the two teams, especially in such wet conditions. Zain was the only player to really impress from Bosch, nice little handoff on our scrumhalf for his try under the sticks and stealing the ball in the tackle a few times….always liked him & he definitely deserves a place in the CW team, but not in the backline.

@JJ Rondebosch 7 vs 32 Paul Roos, you see the Newlands game at beginning of year means absolutely nothing, PRG was all over Bosch today and left many points on the field, however, its not a bad Rondebosch team though.

@Ploegskaar: That was probably the wrong words to use, sorry about that. But as i mentioned further in my comments a few players to think of in alternatives to the team, as in my opinion both have a strong contention for the craven week and if not the academy week team. But other than those 2 players the team chosen looks good and probably similar to what most people would chose if they knew the players.

@jj: Please explain “bias point of view”. Are you referring to players or schools?

If schools, what relevance does the strength of one or more teams have to the selection of representative teams that consist of the best individuals, in the various positions, in the province?

If players, then I assume you are familiar with all the players listed and I would welcome alternatives, which was after all the point of the exercise.

@jj, i hear what you say and agree that Bosch will be a big contender for top spot in WC, however, do not attach too much weight on the Newlands game, its like playing a 10 over cricket game without running between the wickets, we all know what happened last year with Bishops and Boishaai, we thought that Bishops were going to be the team only to be heavily thrashed by Boishaai and thereafter by PRG.

To be honest, Bishops’ win over a very good Gim side on the weekend was huge, i never saw that coming, but as i stated elsewhere, we now wait to see if they can maintain this intensity through out the season! Its really good and exciting for WP rugby when both the CT and Winelands schools are on level par.
Its going to be an interesting and very tough season!

@phat55: That is true phat55. PRG and Boishaai will always have a strong team however this year I think Rondebosch gave the WP league something to worry about after beating PRG at Newlands rugby day . Even though Newlands rugby day is not a full match it does go to show that the Rondebosch team has something to offer and can cause some big upsets in the upcoming season.

Defiantly seems like a biased point of view, from the games I have watched Rondebosch is the team to beat this year and have very little representation in the possible team. They have an excellent srumhalf in Potgieter and and good number 10 in Rory.

The games I have seen Keenan Abrahams from Paarl Gim does not even start but somehow cracks the possible stating academy team.

With the results of this past weekend of Paarl Gim going doing to Bishops, Sacs beating Landbou and Rondebosch thrashing Wynberg this possible team could very well changed dramatically as the season goes by.

There are 5 Boland Landbou boys in the expected Craven week team vs 5 SACS boys in the expected Academy team. We will see how the two teams go against each other this Saturday. Unfortunately I have only managed to watch some of the games on TV so no real idea of who are the form players. I will be heading off to watch Rondebosch/Wynberg. Hopefully this Bosch team will live up to expectations for the whole season. Wynberg have surprised me with some of their wins at the St Stithians day. Hoping for a cracker of a game.

@BuffelsCM: I have read the comments from all the bloggers and I can see merit in every opinion raised . I am so glad I do not have to pick between these talented youngsters . I know I am going to sound like a broken record but the Western Cape really need another team to play at Craven Week . Call them WP Country Side , or WP Southern Suburbs or whatever but surely one will be able to pick 3-4 teams out of this talent pool who all will be as competitive as any other team at the Craven Week ?

@BoishaaiPa: The CW coach will know a number of the players seeing that he is currently coaching them at Boishaai or has coached them at AW last year. Although the CW is quite a step-up from AW, the coach is experienced enough to do a good job IMO.

The provincial sides have 4 props and the teams should perhaps be adjusted accordingly. I still maintain that the sides should actually have 23 players to provide cover for a lock as well as a loosie on the bench. At the moment you actually have 6 players that need to cover 5 positions (numbers 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) which is quite a tough task.

@beet: Yes Beet, Boishaai is blessed to have a number of “ysters” in the tight five. At least 3 will definitely play CW.
Ernst is an excellent player. Muller Uys is actually better suited as a number 8 than a lock (although he can do the job at 4 as well)

@beet: Chait and Lourens could well be the two no 10’s as well and not weaken the side at all..they will bring another dimension to the team…Lombaard can be used as a utility back as he can slot in at 10 or 15 as needed as can Willemse..We are lucky to have enough quality players that will all bring something to the table. It all depends on what the coaches game plan is and if the selectors listens to him…combinations or individual skills….then again, the coach can adapt his game plan around the players strengths…plenty of options, but if they are not used to playing the game the coach want them to play, the same might happen that happened last year.

Talking about the Jan van Riebeeck lock, what has become of Johan King? Isn’t he meant to still be at school this year, perhaps u19 now.

Jordan Chait played very well at KERF and I was also impressed by the SACS wing Reitumetse Mogoje.

Ruben de Villiers and Salman Moerat are machines in that HJS engine room. Cape locals were not kidding when they said what that Boishaai tight 5. I also thought the 9 Thain did well against Monnas as did the 13 la Grange. Ras at 12 was lethal. Lombaard played 15 so it was hard to compare him to Willemse of PRG who looks to be a really good player.

Another player I’m keen to find out how he goes this weekend is Troy Payne of PRG.

Also reliably informed that van Rhyn and Uys of Gim are both ysters so can’t wait to see them play.

@BOG: It’s much much harder to pick a team when there is more than one good rugby school in a region

Daai PRG groot vleuel gaan bo oor jou manne hol.

Of hoe sê ek nou?

@RBugger: I could have put Zain at prop, 6/7/8 or 12 I suppose, he has played all of them (and been equally good in all those positions), but I think his future is at 6. With Joa and Khanya providing additional line-out, carry and link options, I think it makes for a balanced back-row as well, as Zain is not the tallest.

@PRG 4 Life: Wikus can play both sides, very versatile player, good carrier, which is also why he has a WP contract for next year.

This teams seems lopsided – based on the current form of Rondebosch, I would expect to see one or two more boys in the side.

Zain Davids at 6 is interesting, he is currently playing 12?

JP Smith started at CW last year, and although he did not perform well, I would expect him to be there this year.

Why would the 2 Boishaai props switch positions when they get to provincial level, they have played there all the games this year and most of last year.Solid squads both of them, way to many Sacs boys in the Academy side ,they wont be there at the end. Wp learnt a horrible lesson at last years CW. When the chips are down you need the Winelands Boys ,
