Cape Town “Big 4” rugby schools putting their foot down

Its turning into quite an eventful off season in the Western Cape and its the big rugby schools in Cape Town schools that are mainly responsible for creating the headlines.

Bishops not at the Paul Roos 150th on 28 March

Bishops have opted to travel to Grahamstown where they will play traditional rivals St Andrew’s as part of the Graeme College Rugby Day, instead of attending the Paul Roos 150th.

Bishops and Paul Roos are amongst the oldest schools in South Africa

Bishops’ replacement at the PRG 150th is Landboudal.

All the Western Cape big guns except for Drostdy and now Bishops are expected to attend the festival rugby day, which forms part of Paul Roos’ 150th year celebrations. It will also be a rare opportunity for local school rugby supporters to watch Affies live in the Cape region.

Fixtures

TIME SCHOOL SCHOOL
08h00 Hugenote Hermanus
09h15 SACS Langenhoven Gim
10h30 Landboudal Oakdale
11h45 Boland Landbou Worcester Gim
13h00 Paarl Gim Pietersburg

15h30 HJS Diamantveld
16h45 Paul Roos Affies

Wynberg out of Cape Schools Week 2015

Wynberg has withdrawn from the 2015 Cape Schools Week to be held at Grey High in Port Elizabeth.

In a sense it’s a surprise because former Wynberg (and Queen’s College) rugby coach Ray Connellan is credited as the founder of Cape Schools Week which is played every second year and alternates between the Eastern and Western Cape.

Cape Schools Week now is the second oldest school rugby festival in South Africa after Craven Week.

The timing of the CSW festival is not practical though. It is held just before Academy Week and Craven Week. If CSW wasn’t so steeped in tradition, the event might have been scrapped a long time ago.

Just about every participating school has to make a difficult choice to either involve their provincial youth week representatives (usually best players) or exercise good player management by resting these stars, which normally weakens the team and places rugby reputations at a greater risk.

Drostdy out in the cold

In 2014 SACS became the first of the WPPL schools to make their intentions clear about playing Drostdy. In 2015, the Donkeys look like they may only have two fixtures against WPPL schools – Boishaai at home and Rondebosch away.

Cape Town Big 4 want only 3 games each against the Winelands Big 4

Finalising the Western Cape school rugby fixtures for 2014 is turning into a headache for the WP Union.

One of the requests requiring careful consideration is that the top four Cape Town schools namely Bishops, Rondebosch, SACS and Wynberg only want fixtures against three of the top four Winelands schools (Boland Landbou, HJS Paarl, Paul Roos and Paarl Gim) per annum.

@Maroon: Dis baie oulik.

@PaarlBok: Miskien eendag kan mens so trip reël.

    @Boet: Oh dear…

Positive ending though. I love the idea of a weekend of trials. Something that maybe all unions should adopt.

All Pretoria politics aside….I think it is an honour for Affies to be selected as the school to be playing Paul Roos in their 150th.

@Knight_CHS07: It should be a good game, even though on paper, one would expect Bishops to get a proper klap.

@spilly: According to Rugby365, Bishops will play Grey High at the Graeme Rugby Day. Looking forward to the official fixture list though.

@spilly: I do not have the fixture list, but I was reliably told Bishops play St Andrews in their annual derby on 26 March and will possibly play Grey PE at the Graeme Rugby Day on the 28th.

Agreed 100% on Cape Schools being an under 17 festival.

@Playa: RE Cape Schools, it is a relic from a time before all the ERF’s, WK, Rugby Days etc., so will in my opinion only be sustainable as an u17 festival.

RE the City Schools, read Wynberg was the main driver, rightly or wrongly miffed about their lack of CW and Elite Squad reps. The issue was also not with the 4 Winelands Schools, rather about playing only one of the Paul Roos and Boishaai Rugby Academy each year, no issue with Boland or Paarl Gym. Staggered fixtures proposed from c-team down in the age groups and opens against these 2 giants also make sense, looking at the scores every year.

Anyway, storm in a tea cup, everything resolved and normal service to resume as per the final published fixture list for 2015.

The beginning of the end for cape Schools Week? So sad…

I’d be interested to know the logic behind the move to want to play only 3 of the Winelands schools. Also of interest would be how they will choose who to play, and who gets left out.

Hockey wise it will be sad if PRG cant play against the 4 Cape Town schools. This year PRG ended 3rd on the SA Hockey rankings.

I find it hard to believe that the s/Suburbs schools are not up for playing all four Winelands schools – as far as I can remember the first teams looked forward to these games – maybe not so the C, D & E teams….maybe that’s the reason?
