Goeie kombinasie IMO !!

@Pietie Passion: Ek hoop regtig julle doen goed teen Garsfontein.

Maar hoe gan dit, “been there, got the T-shirt”.

@Pietie Passion: pragtig gestel.

So wat probeer ek hier se??

Die man se prioriteite is top notch.

Soos vroeër deur my gemeld was kombinasies ‘n kopseer. 2 briljante spelers maar dink ek was hulle gister so bietjie ontbloot.

@Oakdale supporter: Statistically 3 of the top 5 come from the Western Cape anyway so what we are really looking for is a 4th WC team to finish in the Top 5 to achieve a true “oorheersing” That will be very hard to achieve given the lack of interaction between the Western Cape’s top rugby schools and the other national pacesetters after the April holidays.

Rondebosch, Oakdale and maybe Boland Landbou look like the biggest challenges for WC no.4 this year. A good year for any of those schools could result in one of the traditional 3 national powerhouses from the WC not finishing in the top 5.

@beet: Troy is just over 1.9m’s with some decent pace, though not the quickest in that backline because there are some real speedsters there.
he’s a very good water polo player & one of the top heptathlon athletes in the country in his age group

@beet: The wind was not that strong but it had an effect on play, PRG’s first try came from a long kick down field, a kick like that would for example not have been possible from the other side. In general, the kicking out of hand (and from the tee) wasn’t that great but it is still early in the season….

Affies se verdediging is bloot gele.

@Muzi: Apart from Affies – don’t write them off, it is only one game – it will be Waterkloof and Menlopark that should dominate in Pretoria this year. Both teams had good acquisitions. Garsies should however prove to be good opposition.

Also can someone explain the effect of the wind at Paul Roos. This is mentioned above and came up in the commentary. Field wise which direction does it generally blow in and is it usually a factor?

A few interesting contest coming up at KERF now. Affies vs EG Jansen. I suspect that the packs will neutralise each other and the result may come down to which backline wants it most. By accounts I heard that EG tried to change their game plan against Monnas and their backs did not click, so they will want to set the record straight because talk is that EG have been trying to improve backline diversity as one of their goals for the season.

@beet: For me the difference was the magic Paul Roos created from broken play. When Affies kept it tight and played within a structure they looked a quality side. However, when the game became loose and Paul Roos started running from broken play, the defence was not there. Wonder if the Bok coaching at Affies contributed to this. Reminds me of a Boks vs NZ game – when the Kiwi’s start running from broken play, we look lost. This is the problem with continued patterns and structures and the elevation thereof above natural skills.

Were there any other players at Markotter that impressed during the day? I know it’s early season for the W/Cape teams but some of these kids hit their straps early due to the serious preseason efforts put in.

The Paul Roos wing Troy Payne is quite a big boy. He packs a bit of power as he showed on his inside cutting run that resulted in a try.

I’d like to see his straight line speed.

@Oakdale supporter: A 20 minute a side game is like using a 20/20 cricket match to rate a test cricket side. Do yourself a favour and note the scores after 40 minutes and then again at the end of a game. Ons Saturday Affies were ahead 12-3 after 40 min and we all know how that ended. Rondebosch do have a great side and did play well on Saturday, but like Paul Roos and all the other sides it is too early to make any predictions, only time will tell!

@BOG: That is the couple of which I speak Bog. The two games in Kimberley. Win both and Klofies will head into the 2nd term as one of the schools to beat.

Obviously beating Grey easier said than done but show me a team that has beaten Grey in recent seasons and still managed to go under the radar and I’ll show you a four-leaf clover

I watched the game this morning. What disappointed me most about the Affies performance is their 1st time tackling, as well as the breakdown in their defensive structures after 1 or 2 phases.

The Affies centre pairing look promising, I rate their 4 and their lineout worked well at times. Their scrum was under pressure at times.

I agree about the PR 10 and 15, both step well, have good acceleration and run good lines.

@beet: I agree with your views, Affies were very strong up front during the first halve with the wind at their backs. We saw from the other games also that if you are pinned down in your own halve against the wind, it was very difficult to get good momentum and to put some good phases together. We were happy with the score at 12 -3 at the turn, knowing that we can turn the tables on them playing in their halve and using our explosive backs to counter.

Affies have a very strong pack of forwards and will surprise a few big guns this season, no doubt. I’m very amped with the PRG win but let us not forget that the home ground advantage, the BIG occasion and emotions that went with it, were all in favour of PRG and that Affies really performed well under the circumstances. At the same time i think the PRG boys had to deal with enormous pressure and expectations on them, they showed great composure and deserved the win.

Gimmies and Boishaai also looked very good on the day, with Boishaai beating a difficult opponent in Diamantveld, however they looked in control throughout. Gimmies were way too strong for Pietersburg from the first minute.
The surprise perhaps was Rondebosch’s strong performance against the Kwaggas. They are going to be very difficult to beat this season and the Winelands schools will have to be at their best this season.

I watched Paul Roos vs Affies last night and was very impressed by 10. Damian Willemse and 15. Joshua Vermeulen. Paul Roos’ cutting against the grain runs were very effective. Also the Paul Roos goal-line defence at the end was tops.

Affies probably deserved more than to lose by a 17 point margin. After the first 40 minutes they still looked like the team most likely to go on and win it. They however didn’t seem to have the backline play to back up a pack of forwards that will be hard for most teams to handle.

I suppose that is the great thing about SBR is that an x-factor backline still has the ability to shine and win a match.

@Muzi: I think Waterkloof might turn out to be a bit of a surprise. No one is paying that much attention to them. Klofies play Grey College and Outeniqua at Wildeklawer, so they might just explode onto the scene in late April with the help of a couple of good results in Kimberley

I wonder how PTA giants Garsfontein and Waterkloof look this year…to be honest with you I wasn’t that all impressed with what I saw from Affies against Paul Roos…compared to that great side in 2013 this year’s pack isn’t all that convincing….Affies lost the collision points without forward dominance the lads form PTA looked ordinary…Ruben van Heerden’s future is at 7 IMHO…

Having said that, Rondebosch looked really good today & that will be a huge game for PRG
About our own game WOW! being down 3-12 halftime against Affies & then getting 26 unanswered points in the 2nd half was great to see

@Playa: Last year when Eldoraigne withdrew there fixtures against Affies the Monday before the games, Affies quickly scheduled friendlies against Pietersburg in Pietersburg. Pietersburg requested that Affies send there second team for the main match and Affies’ seconds still won comfortably.

Saying that, I would think it would be better if they (Pietersburg) make up a Limpopo Bulls team to play against Gim. Some of the players can still be from Pieterburg, with imports from the district. It can be a Pietersburg Combination side.

Nelspruit, however could have been a good contest to play Paarl Gim. Nevertheless we do not want to take the opportunity away from Pieterburg, and a lot can still happen in 6 months time. They would know something that we don’t know.

I would have loved it if one of the leading schools’ festivals sacrificed themselves for PRG’s 150th and rather have these celebrations over a weekend, just as Grey PE did last year for College’s 150th. Have more teams, over a longer period participating.

Alas, this line up looks good…at least from lunch time onwards. For Ploegie’s sake, I will be there from 11:30 to support the Farmers while they smash Worcester, and then settle down nicely for the last games which could go either way in my opinion.

The other games will most likely be local affairs. Maybe teams that don’t get to play each other often will be matched up and the Premier A teams can then expect some easier games before the tough festivals begins.

@beet: Not a bad guess!…Except I would also like to see Selborne, Dale and Queens there. I think the normal Cape sides of 2 Paarls, Bishops, SACS, Rondebosch , Wynberg and Boland Landbou will be there, so we will need 8 “upcountry” schools. Affies, Grey, Grey PE, Selborne, Dale, Queens, Maritzburg College and Glenwood springs to mind as the schools I would love to see play down here. That is my personal wish list and hope Paul Roos will have enough pull to get these teams for the 150!

I was thinking a dream fixture list would be:

    Paul Roos vs Affies
    Gimmies vs Grey College
    HJS vs Grey PE
    Boland Landbou vs Klofies
