GRAEME RUGBY DAY PREVIEW
WITH the early season skirmishes out of the way, the Pam Golding Properties Graeme Rugby Day is set for a spectacular display of schoolboy action when it kicks off in Grahamstown at 8am on March 28.
This highly popular event on the schools calendar sees the first teams of 18 schools do battle on the Somerset and Marais A fields as coaches and players approach the upcoming season in earnest.
Headlining the day will be the final match between Grey High and Bishops, two powerful rugby schools with fantastic sporting traditions, who are sure to provide a fitting end to the day’s activities.
The Cape Town school have rightly earned a reputation of playing running rugby, irrespective of the situation and this high intensity approach will test any team’s defence.
Bishops are delighted to be competing in the Graeme Rugby Day and director of rugby, Angus Firth, said they were looking forward to the challenge they faced against some of the Eastern Cape’s top schools.
“It was always a longstanding tradition where we used to tour the Eastern Cape and this is a little part of attempting to revive this tradition. Three-match festivals have taken the tour enjoyment factor away from so many boys and this hopefully will have a very much more tour feel than a Festival,” Firth said.
“We are playing Grey at the Festival, a hugely formidable foe, but like us, they like to play an open and exciting brand of rugby so it should be a superb spectacle no matter who wins.”
Under the captaincy of Michael de Marco and the coaching of former EP player Tim Fraser, Grey will be looking to put together another big year, with exciting players in the backline such as Curwin Bosch and Keanu Vers, who both played for SA Schools last year. But they will be well tested by Bishops’ enthusiasm and running approach in their first big test of the season.
Hosts Graeme have generously conceded the main game to the Grey-Bishops showdown, but will be keen to give a good account of themselves in the main curtain-raiser against a formidable Dale College side.
The Grahamstown school have never given themselves an easy game in the Graeme Rugby Day and skipper Heino Gaiser will be urging his players for a committed effort on Saturday.
With talented Dale flyhalf Courtney Winnaar likely to dictate matters from the pivot position, the Graemians will have to prepare themselves for another tough challenge.
Union High and Cambridge kick off proceedings at 8am, while Pearson face one of their most testing fixtures when they play Queen’s at 10.20am.
With their strong rugby pedigree, Queen’s will take the field as favourites, but Pearson are fast emerging as opponents capable of taking on the more established rugby schools and will be hoping to make a point on Saturday.
In a pre-season practice match, they lost 25-5 to Grey and this provides them with another opportunity to show they can mix it at a higher level.
There should be an intriguing battle at 12.40 when Kingswood play Marlow, who always manage to provide a hard challenge, irrespective of their opponents.
Versatile sportsman Garrick Mattheus will have an important role for Kingswood at flyhalf, while the Grahamstown side will have to handle the Marlow lads up front to give them a chance of victory.
Marlow’s strong physical approach will certainly test the credentials of a Kingswood side which has plenty of potential. A good performance for Kingswood could set them up for a successful season.
The new-look St Andrew’s side will be aiming to prove themselves in a 1.50pm clash with dangerous Humansdorp outfit Nico Malan. St Andrew’s have just two players back from last year and the hard-running Nico Malan XV will certainly provide a good test of their character.
It should be a typical schoolboy game, with both sides committed to running rugby.
@QC86: Rudi how you going to split your time this week one son at Kearsney and one at Jeppe.
@Knight_CHS07: Ye agree were did QC come up with the No 7 being the kicker although you could not fault the rest of his game I think he played well, the QC No 2 also very good only Under17 this year will be a hand full next year.
@Mike: Grey played really well I thought and kept there nerve there defensive lines were really good, and agree Dale played really well.
Well only saw the last 5 minutes of the Union vs Cambridge game so not to sure what happened there.
Hudson vs Muir well I would say that Muir were really poor they just seemed to have no heart in there play.
QC vs Pearson the first 15 minutes Pearson were in the game and after a try against the run of play were 7 nil up, but I think that were it ended QC played well the scrum worked well and backline was good there one centre Du Randt was the centre of the day for me. Well anyway Pearson will have to step up to be in the big league but will say all the talk of QC been weak this year seem to be un founded.
Selborne vs Brandwag well Selborne were impressive they big/fast and mobile and playing with a lot of there add on players I think they will have a great year. My team of the day.
Kingswood vs Marlow as said by others it just amazes how Marlow stay competive with there numbers they have guts/guts/guts and Kingswood played badly they seemed to be dis-jointed at times.
St Andrew,s vs Nico Malan after 15 minutes the St Andrew team realized they could not out muscle the NM pack and started using there backs which they did really well, the backline played like a well oiled machine and as a unit were impressive.
Graeme vs Dale the game was very good and the final score showed more about how well Dale played and not how badly Graeme played who played actually very well. Dale will be a hand full this year. Winnaar control things really well.
Grey vs Bishops well both played well Bishops ran the ball all day and Grey defended well, Grey also controlled things up front but a good game overall.
Well in summary I will say this the tri-nations on the border is going to be very hot and very close although Selborne should come out on tops. Also Grey 3 games against the 3 Border teams will be really tough matches and yes Grey re-union against Queens is not going to be the one side affair many were thinking.
Well, at least my Bishops boys did better than I thought they would. Have heard from one or 2 people that they certainly had their chances to win it but handling did let them down on occasion. Also a pity that I believe Leyds went off injured as he could have had a big impact. Just pleased that they seemed competitive and played attractive rugby.
@Mike: that’s really good to hear about Dale.
I must say I’m glad the all the Border teams won against their EP counterparts.
Overall it was just a great day of rugby. All the sides have it their best shot and played some attractive rugby. I must give massive credit to Dale who I think played brilliantly yesterday. The Graeme team they played was a good one and Dale really stepped up. They are going to shock some sides this year.
I did not see all the games on the A field as I was watching games on other fields as well but here’s my opinion of boys who stood out:
1. ?
2. B Gongqa (Dale)
3. NJ Oosthuizen (Marlow), D Voigt (Selborne)
4. F Fourie (Brandwag), D Froneman (Selborne)
5. D Stevens (Brandwag),
6. H Niewenhuizen (Selborne)
7. S Am (Dale)
8. S van Vuuren (Brandwag)
9. J Bruce (nr20 Selborne)
10. C Winnaar (Dale)
11. ?
12. J van Heerden (QC)
13. K Vers (Grey),
14. J Armstrong (nr21 Selborne)
15. C Bosch (Grey).
My top player of the day: Curwin Bosch (Grey)
Greame did much better than the scores reflect.
@Veg: 2 areas of QC play that concerned me last week was their scrum, tight head and their fly half, they changed both and it made a big difference. @Knight_CHS07: I went to watch my youngest son playing on the back fields and I asked the sac’s boys what the score was. Then walking back to the main field I bumped into a mate of mine whose son plays in the sac team and he also gave me the score as 36-31, so Ja sorry about that
Unfortunately never got to see the Cambridge v Union game a tad early. Was rather impressed with Queens after most people writing them off.As said previously thought their one centre and one flanker were really good.Selborne were impressive.Being a front ranker I love it when props score and the one Selborne prop scored a beaut under the uprights.Physically Selborne seamed the biggest side to me.The number 8 is a big unit.As already stated thought the one flanker had a great game.Kingswood disappointed me.As a old Kingswoodian behind me remarked the first person they should get rid of is the conditioning coach. The Kingswood forwards were loitering in the backline all afternoon.Felt the scoreline flattered them a bit.Felt St Andrews underestimated Nico Malan in the beginning but then turned it on and as CHS07 said the back line were impressive.Grey are a good outfit and Bosch is class.Havent watched Bishops for years and love their philosophy of running rugby. However with defenses as organised as they are now you have to earn the right to go wide.Spreading the ball across the field is all well and true but doesnt count for much if you arent getting over the advantage line. That my 2cents.
@QC86: I think the score was 33-20 to SAC. I couldn’t believe that the QC number 7 was their first choice kicker
@Veg: St Andrews were my team of day. Their backline was sublime, numbers; 10, 11, 12, 14 and 15 stood out for me. Wow! What a peformance.
I left at halftime during the Grey vs Bishops game. The Bishops were impressive, I have never seen a school run the ball so much. Curwin Bosch, the Grey fullback showed me why he made SA Schools last year…the boy played very well during the first half, I was really impressed.
Dale running away now 27-0 graeme have done really well
St Andrews won 36-31 v Nico malan
I don’t bought Pearson we’re going to be competative, well done to Queens!
Keen to meet any other bloggers.R20 doubles are the business.QC86 said the Queens centre was good.Think their one flank aint bad.He also said Selborne were giving their squad a run.Different game once the big boys came on.Red head no 6 good game.Kingswood tight five loitering in the backline.St Andrews I think under estimated Nico Malan but cranked it up in Second half.
Congratulations to the Wolramme, their team might not be as good as last year but compared to other 260 pupil schools their results will always amaze me.
I must say I am nervous about this Bishops Grey game. Bishops squeeked past St Andrews in the last second who lost to Brandwag who just got smashed by Selborne!
Whew……could be a loooong afternoon!
Selborne won 45-12
@akw: both, Selborne up 10-0 ht
@QC86: Pearson tired or QC playing better?
QC running away now 41-7 not much time left
QC 17-7 up now HT
Hudson won 26-0 Qc down 7-0
@QC86: Pls keep the scoreboard up to date for us stuck in Gauteng…
@Playa: Kingswood over Marlow? I hope you are wrong.
@QC86: Hudson cruising. Kingswood just-just got by Muir the other day
Cambridge won8, Hudson leading 19-0 v muir
@Wyvern: Tough ones to predict…I can’t spot any obvious wins here. The favourites are pretty obvious…Cambridge, Muir, Queens, Selborne, Kingswood, St Andrews, Dale and one might say Grey in the main game. This is all on paper though, as any of the underdogs are capable on winning. I pass
All the best to all…and here’s to a 100% strike rate by the Border teams…
@QC 86: Sorry to hear about your son eysh I thought he should be fine by now. Those Engelbrecht’s are quite possibly the most physical players at Selborne. Hey Mr Venter would u be kind and bring some biltong for me tomorrow please.
@Playa: I’ve just received an update on Queens and posted it.
Dale I assume is still the same.
@Playa: More about giving everyone a run, match fitness a big concern.@CHS08: Morgan will get a run in this game,Grant got a hit on his injured knee so old murphy is following us around.Engelbrecht;s are a problem, they such good players but full of off the field issue’s ,which is such a pity,Selborne could use their dog in the pack this year.
@Playa: Agree. They are resting the players with jujuries. They can probebly play but it gives them a chance to get everybody to play / start a game before Kearsney begins. Not easy games at Kearsney with Kearsney at home on day 1, Menlo day 2 and HTS Middelburg day 3. A long season ahead with Wildeklawer and Cape Schools as well.
@CHS08: They have quite a hefty season ahead. If this is a way of managing their players, they’re going about it the right way IMO.
Nc nc nc nc nc still not convinced by this Selborne team. Where is Morgan? What about the Engelbrecht’s?
@beet: Dale and Graeme teams not released yet?
Anyone going to put down some predictions…..?
I’ve received the updated Selborne team
@CHS08: Selborne going to KERF next week,so some players need a run.

then a whole pile of backups,
@GCollege86: Selborne going to run a second string team.
Strange seen a ex Muir boy captain of Hudson?
@GCollege 86: What changes miight those B?
A few changes to the Selborne team that has been published above. No.2, 5, posibly 6, 7,8,10 and possibly 14.
@Queenian: No. He is the son of Clinton Brown. He was at shool with me and played for PE police after school.
Wonder if Pearson No 5 Tristan Brown is Dick Brown son.
