@Grasshopper: That’s because you buy them from Far Northern KZN and Border and have to house and feed them, for limited other reason.

@meadows: yep, agreed. Glenwood’s 250 odd boarders provide the bulk of the A teams in all sports, far better due to extra practice. The boarding house wins nearly all inter house comps. The size of the boarding house definitely reflects on strength of sports. Look at College, Grey Bloem etc with big boarding facilities…..that is why Westville doing well in sports is a miracle without a proper BE…

@Grasshopper: At a boys only boarding school like MHS 20 teams or about 300, or 55%, of the 550 boys play rugby. 8 open sides and 4 per age group from U16 – U14. I recall in the past 5 sides on occasion per age group but this no longer seems to be the case. Another 120 odd play hockey in 11 hockey sides. In all 76% play a winter sport each week.

The fact that a high percentage of boys play sport does not necessarily translate into depth of quality but is more a function of life in a full boarding environment out in the country far from the distractions of the city. I suspect that in all the sports a normal distribution of ability and physical attributes will apply across the boys most years.

The one advantage that boarding schools do have is that there is a lot of social and touch rugby played on the fields over and above formal training which must help in skills development.

@Grasshopper: @GreenBlooded: Very impressive, 48 extra mural activities. Yes, it’s a bit senseless to attempt to have more teams on the field if you won’t find opponents for them.

@Grasshopper: The problem with getting more and more boys to play is finding games for all of them. I’m sure they battle to fill fixtures for the lower teams unless it’s vs College or Westville.

@Deon Pitzer: Agreed! There are other sports that the boys do like hockey. We have up to 28 rugby teams (rarely though) and 16 hockey teams, then there are all the ‘fringe’ sports like Badminton, squash, surfing, bodyboarding, paddling, mountain biking, athletics etc. I think Glenwood offers 48 extra mural activities and if a boy can’t find one he likes then he just does cross country, run run run!!

@Grasshopper: @Lindenpa: I think that, in the context of percentage 33% to 36% is pretty standard. I have no idea how many boys play rugby at PRG. I think that we on average, field about 25 teams per Saturday, sometimes more, sometimes less. Most teams use the players of lower teams, but for thee purposes of the discussion, say on average each team has two reserves who does not play in another team. Then we have 425 active players, therefore about 33% of the school. However, I think a much lower percentage of boys actually play rugby though. But, obviously, that is only in the context of percentages. Quite a significant percentage of the boys, as in the case of GW, play hockey. Perhaps 33% is just a natural occurrence.

@Lindenpa: Yeah, but sometimes it’s quality over quantity, that certainly is the case for schools like Boland, Outeniqua and Oakdale……maybe Linden fits the same profile……boxing way above it’s weight division

@Grasshopper: Only +-120 boys play rugby which is also about 33%. We have 8 teams, 3 open teams and 2 for each age group except under 16 where we only have an A-team.

@Lindenpa: Agreed! So 36% of Glenwood play rugby, which is not great really. I think 50% plus is a good % to aim for, so for Linden let’s say 180 boys play rugby, that is about 10 teams, is that correct? 2 for each age group and 4 open teams?

I know that Dale only has 530 boys and has never been a big school numbers wise. Half probably play rugby. They often can compete against the bigger schools

href=”#comment-51212″>Grasshopper: It’s a fallacy to think that you can get all the boys in any school to play rugby. Not when the school also plays cricket, hockey, tennis, etc. etc. The only schools where a high percentage may be possible are boys’ only schools and maybe agricultural schools like Boland Landbou.
I cannot see that one can expect Linden to get all its boys to play rugby where only about a third of the boys play at a rugby school like Glenwood. It is just unrealistic.

@Lindenpa: Wow, doing very well for a small school then. Although at Glenwood (who I support) only 450 of the 1250 play rugby. So if Linden can get all 360 boys to play then they are not as ‘small’ as one would think. This is how Boland Landbou and other smaller schools compete at the top level, every boy must play rugby….

@Grasshopper: Jip, just to confirm the size, Linden is a co-ed school with 750 learners of which about 360 are boys. They will have good first teams for the next three years, unfortunately the Under 15’s aren’t doing too great this year. About 7 of this year’s regular first XV are grade 11’s and of the 23 in the squad 13 are grade 11’s.

Beet, the game that you are missing was the first one of the season:

    Midstream College 0 – 45 Linden

@beet: OK, so 2 of those opponents are Top 20 and Linden lost heavily to both of them (Wynberg and College). Taking nothing away from them, a good season relative to their size, well done!

Again, Linden not on the list. Their stats for the season:

    Played: 12
    Won: 10
    Lost: 2
    Points for: 426
    Points against: 167
    Points difference: 259
Average points (no bonus points): 3,33

Places them in the first 20 on this list.
