This weekend, Varsity College U16 side will play their first fixture of the season when they take on the touring Maidenhead RFC U16 side. The Maidenhead side have won Division 1 of the Berkshire RFU Youth League for the past 3 years (their B team won the equivalent trophy in Division 2 for the past 2 years). Maidenhead has just completed the Cape leg of their tour where they played Brackenfell High and Worcester Gymnasium.
The Varsity College U16 side is coached by former Zimbabwean international Aubrey Papenfus and has a number of boys from Northwood, Glenwood, DHS and Westvile in the side. They are sure to give a good account of themselves. The game will be played at the Varsity College grounds (Riverside Sports Complex) after the Premier Division game between Varsity college and UKZN Maritzburg, with kick off at 17H15.
Was a really good game, with both sides giving it their all. Maidenhead ran out 17 – 10 winners, but a draw would probably have been a fairer result. Maidenhead have just completed their season and have been training for their trip to SA, while Varsity College have only had 1 or 2 practices.
All in all, it was an exciting game that went down to the wire with both sides scoring 2 tries. While Varsity College were unable to convert their tries, the Maidenhead fly half had no problem and also kicked a penalty.
@Beet: Yes, I think it’s currently one of the nicest as far as facilities are concerned. Lot of money has been put into it.
@Greenblooded: As long as the ref doesn’t allow own goals, we’ll be ok
The Riverside Complex is very nice. The floodlights are good and so is the scoreboard.
At Kingspark, the lighting sucks and at least one reguarly used field doesn’t seem to have a scoreboard.
I hope they have organised a decent ref for this match.
lets see our boys do well
