Diamantveld reign again in 2026 after the most dramatic Wesgrow title race yet

Diamantveld successfully defended their Wesgrow Skole Sportreeks 1st XV rugby title in 2026, but there was nothing routine about retaining the crown. In what proved to be the most fiercely contested season in the competition’s short history, the title race remained alive until the final whistle of the final round.

Remarkably, every team that finished between first and fifth can point to one result that ultimately cost them championship glory. Such were the fine margins that separated the contenders.

No side will replay the “what ifs” more than Trio of Kroonstad. Entering the final weekend as log leaders, they stood on the threshold of a first-ever Wesgrow title. Victory would have sealed history. Instead, Jim Fouché of Bloemfontein produced one last statement performance.

Having lost only once all season, Jim Fouché edged an absorbing encounter 34-31, denying Trio at the death. It was a fitting finale to an outstanding campaign from the Bloemfontein outfit who can so close to claiming the title themselves.

That honour belonged to Diamantveld.

Knowing exactly what was required, the Kimberley school ruthlessly dismantled Witteberg of Bethlehem 56-7, collecting the maximum six log points. When the mathematics were complete, those six points proved just enough to leapfrog Trio and secure back-to-back Wesgrow Skole Sportreeks titles.

Championships are rarely won in August alone. They are forged over months through consistency, composure and an ability to deliver when the pressure is greatest. Diamantveld once again mastered all three.

For head coach Vlos Molnar, the triumph crowned a season his rugby-mad family is unlikely ever to forget. Since arriving in Kimberley from Boland Landbou, Molnar has established himself as one of the country’s most accomplished schoolboy coaches, adding yet another trophy to an already impressive résumé.

Success, however, was not confined to Kimberley.

His brother, Andras, continues to coach in the fiercely competitive Western Province Premier League, where he has played a pivotal role in Stellenberg’s remarkable rise as the first team’s defence coach. The Jades’ outstanding campaign was spearheaded by the family’s next generation, with nephew Yanos Molnar emerging as one of South African schoolboy rugby’s standout No. 8s.

While Diamantveld celebrated another championship, the 2026 Wesgrow Skole Sportreeks will be remembered for something even greater: a title race in which five schools genuinely believed they could finish on top. In the end, the defending champions once again found a way, proving that when the stakes are highest, champions know exactly how to answer the call.
