Parel Vallei will put their unbeaten record on the line this Saturday when they travel to Memorial Field to face SACS in what shapes as their toughest assignment of the season.
Somerset West’s Parel Vallei have enjoyed a standout campaign and remain undefeated, but few will be backing them to keep that record intact against a traditionally strong SACS outfit in Newlands. The hosts, despite being without the go-forward presence of prop Qiraan Hermans and the reliable distribution of scrumhalf Jordan Forbes, still boast a formidable unit on paper and are expected to lean on their forward strength to set the tone.
The backline duel, however, could prove decisive and promises plenty of entertainment. Parel Vallei carry genuine strike power, with creative fullback Shudley Rhoda emerging as a key attacking weapon capable of turning matches with his vision and counter-attacking threat.
Much of the spotlight will fall on the midfield battle, where veteran inside centre Brad Brown is expected to play a pivotal role for PV. With a good deal of school rugby experience behind him, Brown is at his most dangerous when crossing the gainline and putting opposition defences under sustained pressure.
Opposing him is one of the country’s most promising young talents in James Sale. Combining power with finesse and an eye for timing, Sale offers both direct running and subtle distribution, and will look to link effectively with his equally talented midfield partner Luca Orgill.
With contrasting strengths across the park and both sides carrying clear attacking threats, Saturday’s clash has all the ingredients of a tightly contested and compelling schoolboy encounter.
PV’s ambition is to establish itself as a recognised rugby school competing against the established and elite in the Western Cape, and at the helm of that drive is highly motivated rugby man Alwyn Burger, an Old Boishaai product, who is steadily but purposefully laying strong foundations around culture, as well as the physical and mental approach required for sustained success.
While the clash against SACS has long been marked on the calendar, the PV group’s culture ensures that every match is treated as the biggest game of the year. That mindset is driven by a simple philosophy: “month for month, week for week, day for day.”
There are a few tactical adjustments planned for the encounter, but the belief remains that success will come down to executing the fundamentals of the game.
Above all, the team expects its players to uphold the values that define the group: strong camaraderie, discipline on and off the field, respect for opponents, referees and spectators, and the freedom to express themselves fully on the day.
