After a sustained period of rebuilding and renewed focus, Sentraal’s efforts to turn the rugby ship around are beginning to bear fruit. The emphasis on development, belief and consistency is slowly but surely translating into results on the field — and their opening outing in Lichtenburg offered tangible proof of that progress.
It was an especially encouraging performance from a youthful first XV, who fielded no fewer than nine Grade 11 players. The match, however, started in disastrous fashion. Within the opening 12 minutes, Sentraal found themselves 19–0 down, having conceded two intercept tries.
In seasons gone by, such a setback might have led to heads dropping and the scoreboard running away. This time, though, the response told a different story. Showing character and composure, the young side regrouped, clawed their way back into the contest and ultimately secured a remarkable 54–43 victory.
The win carries added significance, marking the first time in five years that Sentraal’s first XV has won their opening match of the season — a meaningful milestone for a programme determined to restore its competitive edge.
There is an understanding that a long campaign lies ahead, with inevitable ups and downs still to come. Yet performances like this suggest that Sentraal are firmly on an upward trajectory.
The positive momentum extended through the ranks, with the 14A side claiming a 22–5 win, the 15A team prevailing 22–8, and the 16A outfit edging a tight contest 21–18.
All told, it was a day that reflected not just results, but the growing resilience and belief within the Sentraal rugby setup.
