The doings of the Ewings?

Only the Doops in from KZN, probably a fair reflection given the selections and relatively poor showing once again in the Craven Week by team KZN.

Let’s hope for a change in structure / leadership and politics with regards to KZN coaching / selections for next season – hopefully this will bring better performances by team KZN in the years to come.

Let’s hope the Du Preez brothers go on to make it big in SA rugby.

Maroenwarm materiaal.

@Tierklou, my vrou is ‘n oud Tier en my skoonpa was lank Tygerberg se skoolhoof.

Ens. ens. Knippie sout???
@Ploeg: Ek wil ook so ‘n beurs he.

    @BoishaaiPa:

Majority of US athletes don’t need the “pocket money” as badly as some of the SA boys do I’m sure.

But just so you know, it is very much against the rules for schools and universities in the US to pay their players in any way.

A lousy grand here or there has resulted in players being declared ineligible/banned and the colleges having titles stripped, fined heavily and being excluded from any post-season participation for a few years.

They take being amateurs VERY seriously.

@Djou: En die “ster” in daardie O 21 sege was Tienie Burger.

If my school is losing out because they dont pay players to attend the school then im happy they losing out. We should learn something from the US system seeing as they are failing at it and breeding dumb/unemployed/injured adults that are lost by the time they are 35.

Am I naive when I think there is something wrong with paying a schoolboy to play money? The way this seems to be going kids from as young as 13 can be full on professional athletes that get paid to do that and their studies will become less and less important. Way to better the nation.

@Djou: Sorry, missed your earlier questions, but noted that you have been answered by the affected party (Tierklou) and the responsible party (Rugbyman). My personal take on this matter is that Tygerberg had given him an opportunity and developed him to the point that he was selected for the WP GK team and SA u16 HP squad. He had therefore received all the possible recognition available for his age group to date and was earmarked for higher honours in any event. I think he derived no additional benefit by moving, apart from reaching his goal through a different province, Garsfontein obviously gets a noddy badge and Tygerberg, who identified and developed him, is the big loser.

@BuffelsCM: Mooi storie oor Eben , dankie, ek sal dit beslis aan my seuns oordra.

Dieselfde aand braai mense by ons.

If you were watching the Bulls vs Stormers game on Saturday, the one dimensional approach by our our countrys top side was evident and proved to be their undoing. No latitude just same old same old ( no vision).

In many ways this to is evident in SA schools selection, it would appear that selectors are infactuated with a schools heritage, ex players legacies and provincial bias. Surely at our premier junior show piece (Craven Week) we should be employing the skills of a panel of visionary change agents!

To the boys, and you know who you are, who did not crack the nod, we applaud you! Take this life lesson on the chin and grow stronger.

@Grasshopper: yeah, the KC vs GW the last two years must weight heavy with the GW boys.

I heard the Sharks guys want Tedder on a conditioning program. He just seems like a Honiball physique. Dewald Human is lighter than Tedder is. As for cricket, I think the lad must do both and enjoy school.

Could interesting seeing three Tedders in the KC team next year! Classic.

Phew, now time to chill after a busy rugger season. Later boys.

@Ploegskaar: You make an interesting observation about the player PJ Toerien. This begs another question, though. One you will be better able to answer as I won’t even contemplate answering it as I don’t know the boys – I just watch SBR for the love of the game. (I had to check who PJ Toerien is and noticed he was selcted as no. 6 flank).

Do you think he would have been selected for WP had he remained in Tygerberg and still made the SA Schools side? If not, the move was good for him. If so, he should have stayed.

Aother question you might be able to answer:
Apart from PJ Toerien, are there other players in the team who made it as a result of relocation?

There are some good players coming through on Dixon (5), Pau (12),Luyt (2), Tedder (13) from the u16’s.

Solid grade 12’s we hope will be Tedder (8), Rich (7), hlongwane (14) and Harris (15).

The poor buggers will need to man up and play as a team, ESP as their away games are: Glenwood, College, MHS, Hilton, DHS.

I understand completely what you’re saying and agree 100%.

HOWEVER, by the government they are still seen as PDI’s and therefore can or may be used in a way that we wouldn’t like to see them used. This has nothing to do with me, it is merely an opinion.

At this moment in time the expectation is a 1/3rd of the 23 should be those who the government perceive to be PDI’s (I’ll put it that way!!!), so 8 from the 23. 5 or 6 will or should be in the starting line-up.

I merely asked the question to confirm what the starting line-up may look like more or less. Not to make a political statement. There is no need for that, it’s something we all know about.

@Speartackle, why on earth do you think that Nonkontwana was the Bulls third choice lock. He wasn’t. He is an amazing player. I had the fortune of watching him at academy week last year and he was powerful and dominated rucks and contact and his line out work was fantastic. If he was not injured for the most of last season, Andrews would have played second fiddle to him in last years team. The Bulls would have picked their strongest team for day 2 knowing that would be the game that sends them to the Final. The fact that he offers loose forward option was another deciding factor. You can’t discard his experience from last year and the fact that most people view him as a potential leader in the side. So please guys don’t spread doubt over things that are perfectly legitimate.

Well done to all the players selected, I’m sure there are some proud parents out there. To those of you who didn’t make it, tough luck, keep working hard as your real rugby careers only start in 2014.

Glad Schickerling and Gelant were picked. The Beckhams will add the necessary spark in the pack with Jean-Luc coming on off the bench. The Boishaai 3 deserved a place as well as Dylan Vlok or Maartens from Pumas.

Picking the Bulls’ 3rd choice lock once again proves that the system is still found wanting.

On a senior note I still believe there’s no better rugby player than Deon Fourie, he completely destroyed the Bulls loosies and made The Mentalist look very ordinary.

@Predator: @vatikaki: This is the exact reason there is a problem with the quota system, because it is insulting to those who are there on merit, insulting to those who didn’t make it as there were players ahead of them not on merit, and so the story continues. Until there is no prescription there will always be questions raised as to merit – all with a racial undertone. This is unnecessary.

    @Predator:

I was under the impression that being referred to as a PDI player was merely an acknowledgement of that persons skin color. It’s a reality that there are expectations which have to be met.

In other words, would they have been disadvantaged under the apartheid regime, meaning they are a ‘previously disadvantaged individual’?

Nowhere did I say they were ‘quota’ selections.

Interesting team. The comment about Bulls costing RG Snyman selection could be valid. He was good against KZN then went AWOL for the rest of the week. This might be the making of him he’ll see that there are no guarantees in life ( even at 205cm) and will hopefully work harder and become an even meaner machine.

Human continues to defy his size. He’s such a good player. I’ve seen him dominate for his school and he was brilliant again at craven week. There’s still hope for good technical player even though they may lack in size. Lion’s Hadebe was unlucky, just not enough places going around.

Pity about Schramm. I was hoping that the selector had seen enough in the Bulls game to keep him in mind. Can’t blame them though. Not enough crucial game time.

Generally a good team and you could pick another team from the payers that missed out and still have have world beater. So much talent.

Interesting to see that that WP the best side gets 6 players, Lions the second best side only 1, and then the Bulls who only managed 1 win against KZN gets 5 reps.
Well done to the Lions for playing really well as a team and very hard luck to the Bulls……..or is there more to it?

@Rugbyrealis. Boonop is hul eie skoolspelers propvol talent.

@RuggaZ: you must be joking! Have you seen Dewald Human play? He was by far the best flyhalf at the CW and did not make the team on reputation.

@Muzi: I became friends with RG’s grandpa during the week and had to SMS the sad news through to them as they left early. They seem rather philosophical about his exclusion.

I’m sure the lad will bounce back.

I would have picked Lungelo Gosa and Innocent Radebe as my flyhalves.. and if we’re going on reputation instead of CW performance, I also would have taken Keyter instead of Jaer; Hearn instead of Zass and Maartens instead of Toerien. Then again, there will never be a team that makes everyone happy.

@Muzi: Yes Muzi, I think RG Snyman was very unlucky. Is Hyron Andrews a 1995 or 1996 “model” ? Will he have another chance next year ?

@TheGoose: Valid point IMO as well about one more lock or loosie: 3 locks and 5 loosies were picked; 3 loose head props as well !

In hierdie geval is Size nie alles nie…..
