Schools that can expect better rugby fortunes in 2026

1. Grey High
Perhaps not quite the Grey High of old that could topple the likes of Grey College or Paul Roos, but 2026 marks a very positive step in the right direction — with promise for the years to come.

2. Monument
The Witbulle are determined to put one of their worst seasons ever firmly behind them. With 10 Grade 11 players returning and a powerful u16 group moving up, Monnas should re-establish themselves. This gives coach Reinhard Gerber the chance to prove his mettle.

3. Drostdy
The next two seasons should be grand for the Donkies. Overworked Coach Tobie Botes has a much-needed reinforcement with his preferred choice, new coaching arrival Henley du Plessis from the Cheetahs, and they look well prepared for the journey ahead. One only hopes their fixture list is strong enough to do them justice.

4. Bishops
There is a well-publicised effort to improve Bishops rugby through technical support and financial investment. With a strong group of experienced Grade 11s returning in 2026, their u19A side should be much better placed to compete, while A-teams across the board are expected to show steady improvement.

5. Stellenberg
The “Dream Team” tag may well follow the Jade Brigade in 2026. Coach Divan Batt fielded a youngish side in 2025, and the experience gained — combined with two standout stars — should make them formidable.

6. Pretoria Boys’ High
In an interview before the 2025 Affies clash, deputy headmaster Chris Oldnall explained the impact of Boys’ High’s partnership with Hall of Fame, which is already bearing fruit. The u14A and u15A teams impressed, and with another strong Grade 8 intake in 2026, PBHS should boast a full set of competitive A-teams, including the Candies’ 1st XV.

7. Kearsney
Kearsney are eager to end several barren years. They have shifted focus from Sevens to strength-and-conditioning development. If the gamble pays off, it could enhance their chances of success and even change the way other schools approach their programmes.

8. Boland Landbou
Landbou will once again field a powerful pack and strike weapons in the backline. The key will be tightening up their defence. If they succeed, they could be a serious force. All eyes on will be on new rugby specialist coach Nico Breedt to adapt quickly in a hard-edged arena.

9. Michaelhouse
After a brilliant 2023 season that saw highly rated coach James Fleming’s team crowned KZN champions, House’s struggles in 2025 revolved around winning only 1 of 11 close games. Supporters are calling for a return to a more expansive, creative style like that of the mid 2000s and mid 2010s that brought them great successes. The fresh input from a new head coach may help convert red-zone opportunities into much-needed points.
