Christiaan Gouws keen to put down roots in Middelburg

Christiaan Gouws has been appointed Director of Rugby at Hoërskool Middelburg, a move that comes as the “Middies” prepare for their debut in the Noordvaal Cup Premier League in 2026.

Since leaving Bethlehem Voortrekker during the Covid years, Gouws has built up a diverse rugby résumé while balancing a career in the farm equipment parts industry for a short period. Coaching stints at Marlow (while working as a regional manager for a tractor company in Cradock), Oos-Moot, Noordheuwel and Helpmekaar have kept him firmly in the schoolboy rugby spotlight.

Now the Grey College old boy has a five-year contract in hand and an excellent chance to leave a lasting imprint. He and his wife — a leading netball coach — are ready to settle with their young family in the “stainless steel capital” of the platteland.

Gouws’ coaching record speaks for itself. With Voortrekker he lifted the Wesgrow title and oversaw BVHS capturing eight of nine Griffons league crowns in his final season. At Oos-Moot, he guided the 1st XV to the Noordvaal Shield, while more recently his junior sides have reached two Noordvaal Cup semi-finals in three years.
