Honestly I only know high level: coached both school and senior level overseas, border Craven Week, did a great job at Hudson Park prior to KC, SA schools assistant and currently doing great at KC. Also as a player played Dale 1sts in ’99, a great team I’ve been told.

I don’t think it’ll be a problem. Reason being it wasn’t a big enough problem in the past when post matrics were around. And back then it was even worse, you could go all the way to gr12 and get demoted!

I think when it comes to school unity and just general “good vibes” on campus and within community the pros definitely outweigh the cons. Rising tide raises all boats as they say:)

Yeah. There will always be pros and cons about this. Luckily for Kingswood, A large amount the old boys and girls send their children there. They not sending them there to become professional sportsmen and women. So Getting 5 or 6 quality players in for two years will only benefit the system I feel. But one must feel for ‘Jonny’ who has maybe been at Kingswood since Grade 1 playing A team and now grade 11 comes and he is the third choice. Thats they only thing I could see stopping this gravy train. When the old boys who love rugby aren’t as involved in the school anymore.

I agree on both fronts. The last few years the difference has been James Winstanley and can’t argue against him being a draw for players (and probably coaches?). We’re lucky to have him.

Regarding getting players in at gr11/gr12, I think there’s a broader interesting debate on this topic, particularly for privates. If you look at it from simply a risk vs reward basis / cost vs output, giving out multiple scholarships (or private funding for that matter) for 5 years is just too “risky” given how many variables can impact these boys over 5 years. In the current economic climate in SA (as well as forecasting this 5 years ahead) makes this even more so.

It wouldn’t surprise me if more privates end up going this route (Bishops?). The question could be how to go about it with the boys best interests at the forefront (I’m maybe bias but I believe KC has done so).

Kingswood is one of the only schools that benefit from getting a few players in to boost their first team for Grades 11 and 12. Their younger age groups doesn’t do too well but the first team has been super competitive. James Winstanley is also a massive draw card for quality players.

Only had 2 last year. The AW selection really does seem that way. 12 different schools represented

They have 5 players across CW and AW. More reps than the likes of Marlow, Graeme, Pearson, St Andrew’s, Grey PE, Nico Malan…This Brandwag group are really weak this year so to have 5 guys getting provincial honours is madness.

Only Three Grey PE boys in the team for CW must be an all-time low. They are the top team in the EC. EP selection seems to be that they must include a player from each region of EP.

2 players in a sqaud of 23 is not a lot and only 1 in the starting 15. Players also dont pick themselves and you pick on individual performances..not team performance. If the latter is done none of the Sharks players should make the Bok team. Perhaps not one of your best posts!

I’m genuinely surprised how many Brandwag players are in the squad…they were very weak at the Easter festival…physically a Top u16 team would have blown them away…certainly a top 15 or 20 school’s 2nd XV would have comfortably beaten them. I don’t see how they could have improved so quickly….fishy

Pitty KC are not playing more stronger schools like Grey, Selborne, Queens or Framesby looking forward to the Dale & NM fixture.

Next year the majority of the NM team will make the CW squad. Having said that I’m surprised that none made it this year and so many KC boys made it.

    POOR NICO MALAN

No Nico Malan players in this years Craven Week is really sad. They are one of the top teams in EC this year and for them not to have any players in the CW is bad. They either over 18 or the selectors got this all wrong.
