Jeppe have to matador the raging Witbul

AI generated image: Ultimately, the matador’s ability to face the bull head-on and emerge victorious showcases the power of resilience, determination, and skill in overcoming obstacles.

A stern test awaits Jeppe at Die Plaas. The Affies pack is close to unstoppable. Their setpiece play is as good as it gets.

This is a big ask for Jeppe.

Affies showed against Paarl Gim that they will not be categorised as a team without backline dimension.

Flyhalf Ruben Pienaar was a handful with ball-in-hand. Busy wing Eagon Roux was a nightmare to mark or stop in an effort that was within a whisker of being player of the match worthy. Captain and inside Janco Purchase is continuously working on the play-making facet of his well-rounded game.

Jeppe are one of the better ball-handling teams around. They love working the ball around to try in efforts to supply runners with on the right lines and they are particularly good at passing the ball back into the inside channel. When they get their syncing right, they are a pleasure to watch. The path to success on Saturday also requires fervent defence. The same level of dedication and intensity that won the day against Grey College earlier this season.

You are so very correct ….. think yesterday was another missed opportunity but alas ….. it is very tough to go up there to try steal a win ….. yesterday the under 16 showed such heart to go from 35-7 to 35 -35 if you also think this includes a foot out of the touch in goal must say it is good signs ….. also if you look at the strides our u14 have made already this season I mean they lost by alot to Garsfontein and managed to score 3 tries against Affies …… the kids must be enthused…… Hardlines to our firsts that last 15 minutes were true heart …. we could have finished a commendable 39 – 33 scoreline ….. although maybe the cover defense had him ….. just hope our back line pitches this coming weekend ……. but congratulations to die Witbul they really do protect the plaas

I agree with you. Jeppe was very poor in the 1st half and Affies very good! Unfortunately you can’t only wake up in the 2nd half. Against Grey, the Jeppe team was switched on from minute 1 to 70, today the switch was only flicked by minute 55. Despite the final score, the mitual respect between these schools are 2nd to none on and of the field. The “morning sir” and “more mevrou” must have been said more than 1000 times today!! Respect!! May this fixture continue for many years between the Pta “boertjies” and Joburg “souties”.

    AFFIES 39-26 JEPPE

Very poor first half from the fellows..
Improved second half but the damage was long done. Affies by then were already thinking about what might for dinner tonight.
Our line-outs are concerning and have been all season if I’m to be frank, especially in the first 35. I was impressed with the way we handled the Affies maul at times, you could see there was work done in the week to address it.
Something Affies do really well against us across the board is that they start fast and well.. by the time we remember that we are in a rugby game, Affies are 15 up.
Too many trips to the Affies 22 with nothing to show also. It was always going to be difficult and compliments to Affies.
We stick with the boys and on to next week, where Teddy meat will be the order of the day.

There have been a few ‘A’ teams that have won.

If memory serves me well it was the 2015 u14A team that you speak of.. I remember being in grade 10 and it being an away game at Affies. In 2014 we played them in Johannesburg.

In 2014, our u16A and u16B teams won, fielding Simelane and Greene and other real tough guys who went under the radar. There was a guy called “Jigga”, in Tsessebe who played 6 for that team. A mean mean fellow. The story goes that Jigga permanently injured his shoulder in the off season that December trying to bench 100kgs in preparation for his u17 grade 11 year. That team went on to lose 55-35 to Affies in 2016 their matric year.

The u16A team in 2016 led by the late Muzi Manyike also beat Affies. They won relatively comfortably actually. Another group of tough guys who would unfortunately go on to lose 41-45 in 2018, their matric year.

I think there may be another 1 from before my time.

Agreed, this fixture gives Jeppe and KES the benchmark of the ‘pro standard’… Affies is an absolute conveyor belt of rugby talent. Big Respect. Jarring to see these BIG boy-men arriving in their, grey socks, short pants with blazers and green caps…oh they’re just well-mannered lads, but 6ft 5, 99kg and going to tear you in half like Jack Reacher. That said, the Jeppe lads similar thing, tent of a blazer coming apart at the seams, shirt collar not big enough to tie the top button…stands up, wipes the crumbs from his mouth, nods “morning sir”.

Die Witbul op die plaas….. that would be a remarkable feat. I mean for us to be playing the likes of Grey be it in a festival and Affies an annual fixture since 2014. Is testimony to the phenomenal decision that the Affies management made to stop playing rugby for trophies and play friendly games and we at Jeppe are extremely thankful for that …. the improvement in our rugby had been driven by the pursuit of trying to give Affies and their fourtyteams a good fixture ….. If I am not mistaken we fielding 24 Rugby teams and 14 Hockey teams today testimony to the brilliance of this fixture …… the u 16a and 2rd and 1st team rugby games will be very competitive with maybe one of if not all three of those teams stealing wins today…. in the hockey this year’s first team seems to misfire every now and then in all honesty Hockey is the sport Jeppe is truly remarkable in I would say we as a school have always been top 5 in the country at Hockey even between 02 and 09 …. so this year is a chance for Affies on the Hockey field …… speaking to old boys who have played the Affies fixture regularly and I have two in my family…. A win at die plaas is something very rare and you and your mates always savour ….. think at A team level we only have one win and that was the 2014 u14 a team that shocked Affies that wonderful morning so it going to be a awesome day today and wish everyone involved the best of luck …… for our first team rugby boys greatness awaits in the history of Jeppe if you were to manage the task of taming die Witbul of die plaas

We could have really done with this being a home game I belive. It’s going to be really really tough in Pretoria. Will be interesting to see if there is a specific tactic we go to, something new or creative they’ve worked on perhaps.
Granted we will need to be absolutely up for it; the boys cannot be phased, the crowd will need to be loud the boys have to be brave, our forwards need to hit and hit hard – these things are not up for negotiation if we are serious about winning, then it’s over to the hosts. The u16 game should also be interesting if Jeppe show up.

    GREAT GAME OF RUGBY

I know that Affies is not underestimating Jeppe at all and is treating this game like any other Saturday durby, with respect, Jeppe is a formidable opponent and they have shown this as their rugby program is getting better and better and there has always been huge respect between the two schools, no badmouthing and hatred like some, just pure respect, so I do hope this Saturday is going to deliver some exciting Rugby to watch like against Gim last week, there was no real Runaway scores which kept everyone on the edge of their seats which was great rugby to watch.

This Jeppe team NOT to be underestimated (again!). Affies now (after Jeppe beat Grey) has the distinction to be the only school team that has never in their history lost to Jepppe and I’m 100% sure Jeppe will want to change that. From an Affies point of view Jeppe beating Grey was a blessing, the chances of Affies being complacent now will be small. From a Jeppe point of view as the subject suggests if the forwards can stay with the Affies forwards, they have a real chance of ANOTHER big scalp. I will go for an Affies win by 5-10 (only because Affies will remember after Grey how good this Jeppe team actually is and will be 100% focused.)

Game will be very interesting. They will be playing on the same field where Jeppe stunned Grey.
