The Noordvaal Cup is finally here! The premier league version gets underway with a must-watch clash of the Lions region heavyweights Helpmekaar Kollege and Hoërskool Monument in Braamfontein.
Helpmekaar have been on one of their three-term school holidays. This one was an incredible 24 days in length. Their last match was a rewarding 40-13 victory against Gloucester’s Hartpury on 30 March at the Saints Easter Rugby Festival. After a flat start to the season, they seem to have hit a bit of form at the festival. By the time they kick off against Monnas, they would not have seen action for three weeks.
While consistency is not a term that is easily associated with Helpies in recent times, Monnas this season appear to be the ultimate rollercoaster ride. Write the Krugersdorpers up or write them off at your own peril because they seem to be all about producing the unexpected in 2024.
The Witbulle have had no holidays or other commitments in-between but for some reason their last match was the surprising 23-25 defeat at the hands of Westville at the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival on 01 April. So they will travel the 30 or so kilometres East to Helpies with almost as little game time in the last three weeks.
On a different note Helpmekaar, the oldest private Afrikaans school in SA are in the market for a new headmaster with a starting date of 01 January 2025. This is always an exciting process especially with regards to how the choice views and influences the rugby direction of the school.
Dankie vir ‘n great rugby dag Helpies!
Wat’n begin vir die 2024 NoordVaal Cup!

You are correct, Helpmekaar bacame a private school only in 1993, but Beet is correct that despite it only became a private school in 1993 it is the oldest AFRIKAANS private school in South Africa, I know Helpmekaar was also the FIRST Afrikaans school in Joburg. The Afrikaans connection is why Affies and Helpmekaar also have a long standing yearly derby.
Right now only EG feeling the early pressure as they played 1 and already lost 1 against Waterkloof in the NV Cup. And they haven’t even played the likes of Monnas, Garsfontein or Helpmekaar yet. It’s sad for me to see this team underperform. This specific EG team is a team I followed for a few years. They are much better than what they currently playing. The last time I felt they looked good was in the world schools festival. Since then things just aren’t jelling. Nor is it at Helpmekaar. Only Noordheuwel and Garsies seem to be ready for the NV Cup. Monnas should bring it but Helpies and EG worry me the most.
Helpmekaar wasn’t a private school until the mid 1990s. But I don’t know the story behind that…
ROUGH START TO THEIR NV CUP SEASON
