As part of a huge crowd, Kearsney Old Boys got to celebrate their Founders Day in style when their school ran out convincing 34-9 winners against Hilton in the end. Initially the visitors contributed well to an interesting and evenly contested first half. For 35-minutes and a bit more Hilton put up a brave resistance, did ever so well in the lineouts and employed their brand of kick-for-territory rugby that has severed them so well at there own Gilfillan home base. They closed out the half just one score behind at 9-15 without revealing anything of their own attacking strength out wide. This situation required a change of tactics by the hosts in the second half but once Kearsney started getting it right to have their big forwards running at the Hilton outside backs, the mismatches caused the visitors resistance to crumble and changed the completion of the game for good. 19 unanswered points were scored in the second half. In total 5 tries to nil, coupled with the visitors producing precious few opportunities of their own to get tries, told the story of fairly dominant performance by Kearsney over the full 70 minutes.
Hilton were without two key forwards, in no.8 Nqoki Maseko who is important to their ground attacking game and lock Christian Weissing, a tight player who’s bulk are vital in contact situations and helps a fair bit with strengthening their scrum. As a result they lacked the extra dimension that Maseko would have brought in attack and felt the effects of Weissing’s absence at scrumtime. These were two areas where Hilton struggled. However very pleasing was their lineout both attacking and defensive. Lineouts had let them down against both College and DHS in previous weeks. During this game, it was a strong point. The weak tackling display by backs against College, had already been corrected against DHS and most of this match was just a continuation of that urgency that pressed the Kearsney backs, just had Paarl Gym had done and forced them to look as indecisive and make similar errors at times.
Hilton however did not have the luxury of having big strong forwards like Gimmies did to counter the effects of the likes of Daniel du Preez, Ayron Schramm and even Jean-Luc du Preez. These were the players that made the difference on the scoreboard in the end. Surprisingly it wasn’t via the predictable route around the immediate fringes of rucks either. The big boys looked to run into space and showed an appreciation for accurate offloading to ensure that the momentum of moves was not lost. Daniel du Preez had an absolute blinder, while Schramm just continued to play at the level he’s operated at all season long. Another notable mention has to go to Kearsney fullback Chris Lines, who added a lot of value on attack and was sharp on defence.
It was scrumhalf Matthew Reece-Edwards’ 50th 1st XV game, no mean achievement by any standards, but to arrive at this landmark as an under-18 player (as opposed to under-19) is no mean feat. Well done to him.

7-0 |
After a good high tempo start by Kearsney, the hosts strike first blood when fullback Chris Lines goes over for a try. The catalyst in all of this is none other than Kearsney go-to no.8 Ayron Schramm, who has been Kearsney’s best and most consistent performer this year. The movement starts when Hilton flyhalf Simon Purdon’s kick is fielded by Lines, who then sets off a super run by injecting visible pace that makes it extremely difficult for kick chasers to cover the angles. From a breakdown, Kearsney attempts to go wide and centre Blair Cremer makes the first his several useful little contributions for the afternoon, but it’s now static ball and Hilton are well organized on defence. But Schramm who comes up with the big play that unhinges the defence. Once the Kearsney no.8 gets goal-side of the Hilton defensive line, he puts Lines away for the try. Flyhalf Tristan Tedder adds the conversion. |
6 |
7-0 |
Schramm collects the kickoff and Kearsney immediate attempt to attack with ball in hand but make a mistake. |
7 |
7-3 |
Hilton opens their account with a penalty by scrumhalf and captain Cameron Wright. The opportunity to go for posts stems from a good contest at the lineout on Kearsney’s throw, one of several times when Hilton was able to disrupt their hosts at this normally reliable set-piece. After stealing the lineout, it’s Hilton who force their opponents into making a hands in error at the ruck. |
8 |
7-3 |
Purdon is a bit unlucky to get pinged for holding onto the ball on the ground but the penalty shot at goal is missed by Tedder. |
11 |
10-3 |
The difficult to bring down du Preez twins Daniel (lock) and Jean-Luc (flank) work very well in tandem to produce a big physical play that sets up a try scoring opportunity. Unfortunately for the hosts loosehead prop Tijde Visser, with a lot of attention from Hilton defenders knocks on in the act of going over for the try. Play is called back to the spot where Hilton infringed earlier in the move and Tedder makes no mistake from the kicking tee. |
13 |
10-3 |
Hilton is on attack and from the base of the ruck Wright chips a well-disguised and almost perfect chip into blindside space near the left corner flag. The designated target is Hilton wing Jaeger Richmond comes close to scoring. Sadly from Hilton’s point of view, it turned out to be yet another game during which the talents of the underrated wing on attack were underutilised. |
19 |
10-3 |
Kearsney squander a golden opportunity after they win a lineout and swiftly attack wide giving Lines room to get over the advantage line, only for things to fall apart when the support runner on the outside, right wing Thuthu Ndlovu unexplainably chooses to cut inside when it was on big time if he held his line alongside the touchline. |
22 |
10-6 |
Hilton produces a good spell of rugby that is rewarded with 3-points via a Wright penalty. Getting the field position starts with the athletic lock Jason Gouws stealing a lineout which Purdon then grubbers ahead. A little later on Wright pumps one of his trademark up-and-unders into the Botha’s Hill sky, which Lines does well to catch under immense pressure but for which he isn’t given the mark. Under duress, Kearsney then misses the safety of touch with their clearance kick. Hilton remains on the front foot and earn a penalty at a ruck. |
23 |
10-6 |
Schramm catches a Wright highball. Kearsney sets up a ruck and builds a good foundation from where they go wide and it’s Schramm who once again breaks the gain-line. However from the next phase the ball is knocked on and it is now evident that things turn messy for Kearsney backs whenever they are rushed by the determined Hilton defenders. |
26 |
10-9 |
The huge home crowd that turned up for Kearsney Founder’s Day get excited when hooker Jordan Meaker races clear after a turnover. He is however judged to be offside. Wright kicks the penalty and at 10-9 down Hilton now look very composed and ready to come into their own. |
27 |
10-9 |
Thuthu Ndlovu is the next Kearsney player to pass the Wright up-and-under test. He catches and it presents a chance for the home team to attack from deep, with left wing Ryan de Waal going on an excellent break out run. He however has no immediate support and when they do arrive at the tackled ball, illegal sealing is used to try retain possession. Hilton used the penalty to set an attacking lineout, which they win and then apply the first of only two really most promising goal-line threat of the entire match. It however ends when contester JL du Preez traps a Hilton attacker for holding near the Kearsney line. |
31 |
10-9 |
There is more of the same. More kicking by Hilton, more counterattacking from deep by Kearsney and the home team’s lineout woes also continue. |
32 |
10-9 |
Hilton gets penalised at a ruck but the long range penalty kick is missed by Tedder. |
35 |
15-9 |
Kearsney prop Mthokozisi Moloi bulldozes over for a try. It all begins when Meaker breaks down the right hand side, which places Hilton on the back foot from that point onwards. There are a series of infringements by Hilton who’s penalty count against them is growing. Kearsney opt for a lineout and then a tap ‘n go from successive penalties in the redzone. It’s from the latter than Moloi eventually scores. |
Halftime |
15-9 |
Kearsney leads but there is only one score in it. Hilton has done very well. Their tactical game has worked and if the visitors can find more avenues of ball in hand attack in the second half, there is no reason why they cannot win the game based on the performance they delivered in the first half. From Kearsney’s side, it’s their backs who are finding the going tough on attack and need to compose themselves. They lack penetration and flow and are being forced into making errors behind the advantage line. |
37 |
15-9 |
Hilton’s Wright misses a relatively easy penalty after the home team are blown up for not rolling away. Daniel du Preez effects a quick drop-kick restart at the 22m and in the blink of an eye his big carry followed by one by his twin JL has KC back in the HC half. |
38 |
15-9 |
Purdon’s tactical kick ahead is a clear indication that Hilton want to continue on with their first half territorial position strategy of playing the game in the opponent’s half. |
41 |
15-9 |
A bit of excitement for those on the far side from the action as Tedder kicks into the box and gives chase. The bounce favours Hilton and their players patiently allow the ball to roll over the in-goal area line with Tedder ever so close to getting hands on it. A scrum is award back in the position from where the ball was kicked but Hilton under increasing pressure in this setpiece use a hand to rake the ball back and are penalised. Tedder misses the kick. |
45 |
15-9 |
Daniel du Preez has by now edged ahead of Schramm as the best player on the field and comes up with another big carry. However as soon as Kearsney go to the backline they have execution problems. On this occasion accuracy, communication and composure all simultaneously gets chucked out the window as a long pass gets fired into no mans land. |
47 |
15-9 |
A good lineout by Kearsney sees DDP break once more. Once again progress is halted by a Kearsney back, this time it’s for spilling a pass. |
51 |
20-9 |
Kearsney scores an excellent try. Hilton struggles during a defensive scrum and Purdon’s job of clearing from behind his own tryline is made that much more difficult. He makes a good connection which results in distance but does not find touch. De Waal catches the ball, immediately pops it to Lines who employs his blinding pace to outstrip the first line defence. It’s then up to the likes of Du Preez and Schramm to play roles using the left touchline and outstanding accurate and fast passing to support on the inside to advance play at an almost undefendable speed towards the Hilton try-line. Here with ample support around Blair Cremer crashes over for his team’s third try. This was truly a marvelous and highly skillful piece of attacking play. |
52 |
20-9 |
Straight from the kickoff, its guess who DDP and Schramm again who feature prominently as the home team go all the way to the Hilton tryline. Scrumhalf Matthew Reece-Edwards dives over for what looks like a try, only to have the ref call him back and signal a forward pass. |
54 |
27-9 |
With the Hilton pack really struggling in the second half, it’s Purdon’s attempted clearance kick that gets charged down and results in a 5m scrum (Simon Purdon is as asset to Hilton rugby and definitely one of the most underrated players in KZN. It isn’t nearly as bad as this report perhaps makes him out to be on the day, in fact he did some meaningful things during the game, particularly in the first half). Kearsney uses speed off the base of a strong scrum to have a go and then continue with a series of well co-ordinated pop passes to ballcarriers in efforts to breach the Hilton D-line. Eventually its Dan du Preez turn and he makes light work of getting through and over for the try. Tedder converts. |
56 |
27-9 |
Hilton’s lineout is a massive improvement on their College and DHS efforts. It operates like clockwork in the first half but one of the very few errors made in here allows Meaker and Lines to contribute to an exciting attack. |
60 |
27-9 |
More action when Kearsney kicks ahead. Hilton fullback Mark Gunn has to try something to help his team get back into the game. He attempts a counterattack on his right but gets dispossessed by Cremer. Kearsney spreads the ball wide to the left and Ndlovu has a good run. |
64 |
34-9 |
Chris Lines’ blistering pace is more often than not employed by Kearsney wide on the outside, so it was refreshing to watch the fullback hit the line closer to the forwards for a change. This move started with Kearsney winning a clean attacking lineout, a set move around the flyhalf channel followed and Lines cut through to race in for a neat try. Tedder adds the two extra points. |
68 |
34-9 |
Hilton attempt to get the consolation try. From a redzone lineout, they set up a successful rolling maul and send all but 3 backs in to join the drive towards the Kearsney line. But it’s Kearsney who again outmuscle them one more in the contact situations and repel Hilton fairly easily in the end. |
Fulltime |
34-9 |

@lyndonhol: Mr Holder…..thanks. Kearsney offered a Tuesday afternoon after the mid-term break, but Westville declined as they had had a big match on the previous Sat and were facing another tough opponent on the following weekend.
@TheGoose: been a few Greg Halstead (1990/1/2) Bruce Tedder (1991/2) Doug Carmody (1991/92/93 and 94 I think) Those were just guys from my years
Could someone maybe inform as to why Westville and Kearsney did not reschedule their game? Kearsney were meant to play College and they had a sickness outbreak yet they play this Thursday. I am sure if you said to the boys in both schools 1st XV we are playing next week in a “title fight” they would both be up to it. Must be honest though I think the independant ranking overs final conclusion
http://www.saschoolsports.co.za/rugby/rugby-rankings-for-17th-june-2013.html
@oldschool
There’s a kid…think it was Nkosi Dlamini from that DPHS dream team who was at Kearsney and I think made KZN U16 2years ago as a fullback.
Agree on the DHS things….I also think its vital they continue with these good U14 sides but also make sure that previous U14 teams are looked after when they reach other age-groups. Quite frankly, next years crop looks good
@beet: I hope that Northwood haven’t done too much damage in the Durban North community with the “imports” this year. I know that there was a lot of resentment. I remember that in 2010 (for the 2011 intake) they did a lot of work telling the community that they had just had their 3rd consecutive intake of “in area” kids etc. Takes a long time to earn the communities support, very little to lose it again. It is not an area that is short of wonga so they can be quite picky. Busses from Westville, Glenwood, DHS, Crawford North Coast all stop at Northwood, the actual bus stop outside Northwood (!!!) to pick up kids and schlep them across the river, not to private schools – to other govt schools. They have to plug that artery. Winning at rugby is half of it, the other half is winning with local boys. JMO, said it before.
Conditioning – very good. I think Simon is in charge – and a fitter oke for his age I can’t believe you will find. Still like lightening when he runs, might find very few of the kids that can stay with him. Eeisch man, the setup there is perfect, just tie up a few loose ends and they can be right there. And figure out how to get a man of BArry’s stature (coaching wise ) back into the mix.
DHS, yes, very distressing when kids just stop playing, hard to figure it out but they need to.
@Gungets Tuft: I think both Northwood and DHS have given experience to quite a few players but again at the end of the day its about quality not quantity.
Northwood have 2 big props and a lock back, so there is foundation. And their conditioning programme is right up there with the rest. Perhaps a little more effort in backline development required. Maybe target the sevens season to work on this.
DHS needs serious help with conditioning imho. They also lack flair amongst their backs so a lot of offseason work to be put in. But they might also be in need of an attitude adjustment towards rugby. It sounds like they have the highest drop-out rate around, so maybe also a lot more attention needs to be focused on keeping motivation up. During the Glenwood game, on a few occasions the teaching staff went over to direct the boys with performing warcries when their spirits sagged. Maybe need more of that leadership with keeping boys interested in playing rugby as well.
@TheGoose: Fergus must have played 93,94 and 95…..can’t remember exactly. Great player!
@beet: Looks like Northwood might have found the right coach for U16, they finally lived up to their potential in the last game against Glenwood. Losing a lot of their Grade 12’s though, might take them another year to get up to speed, same as DHS. DHS need to see how many of this years team they can hold on to.
Good advice. Mums the word.
@Grasshopper: What years would Fergus Pringle have been. I think you are right about Nico Breedt – was he there for his entire high school years?
@Buffel: My suggestion is stay humble and keep under the radar like Michaelhouse 2012. Based on what we see this year I’d tend to agree with Parochial. 3 big govt schools are fav to occupy top 3 spots in 2014. Glenwood probably better than this year, College definitely better than this year and Westville might be better than this year with uncertainty about the others potential esp Northwood who look like they might be giving the 3 privates a run for their money.
@beet: Fergus Pringle must have played plenty of games for Kearsney as did Nico Breedt, those 2 must have got close to 50 caps..
@TheGoose: Nothing bad. I was joking. Kearsney lost at DHS in 1992. Some guys here remember it well tho. Name of DHS player, place where the try was scored, lead up to try.
@beet: next year kearsney will be competetive and will turn a few heads in the process. Visser and Tedder are back and will have the likes of Rich, Quenet,Tedder S., Hall , Harris and add a few u16’s in Pau,Dixon and Luyt and there is enough there to work with. It is amazing how by the time Kearsney boys get to grade 12, the gap has closed somewhat. At age group level we were probably the best of the rest(Glenwood,College and Westville) being the exception as we lost to them u14,u15 and u16. The Westville u16 game went down to the wire and we were unlucky to lose. Some of the boys are going to play club rugby in the 3rd term and the growth they show is enormous. watch this space.
RYAN VAN DER VAAL HIGHBURY
BLAIR CREMER WAS HIGHBURY
SCHRAMM, DU TOIT, MEAKER, MOLOI ALL HIGHBURY. mEAKER ACTUALLY PLAYED hIGHBURY 3/4 TEAM
@Parochial: Well put!
SCHRAMM HIGHBURY
DU TOIT
@beet: What happened in the DHS game in 1992?
@oldschool: Okay not Zander then but weren’t the rest also from that dream team at DPHS.
@beet: Zander was at Clifton ……Guy Francis has played 2nds this year (or injured I think ) and Hall is 2nds and in grade 11…….
Seems like the gurus over at Kearsney confirm that 9 Kearsney players have reached the milestone of 50 caps.
Including Reece-Edwards
@oldschool: Didn’t the school deduct 1 cap from Halstead after that 1992 DHS game?
@oldschool: What about Guy Francis, James Hall and Zander Rossouw?
@oldschool: Thanks. Those make sense. Apparently Brad Barritt didn’t play 50. I wonder if Mr Goldhawk or Kev Smith would know.
@Greenblooded: I think I’m going to sue Glenwood for R2.1 mil, because I’m sure that my son would’ve made CW if GW didn’t have 18 players there!
@Gungets Tuft: But they give St Stithians a bigger hiding than Kearsney did.
@beet: Jeppe decent result, otherwiese not a great set. Drew to a KES that was klapped with ease by Westville and College. Strange for them to be so high up.
@TheGoose: also Bruce Tedder # 8 (Tristans old man) ….Greg Halstead #15 and Doug Carmody #12 …..all from the 92/93 era …..92 played 20 lost 2 …….all got over 50 caps…….I also assume brad barritt gat 50 caps……
@GreenBlooded: As Grasshopper would say, all in good fun. Not meant as an attack.
Every school has them (or has had them).
Every school is like a family. And you know what they say, you can chose your friends but you can’t chose your family.
@Gungets Tuft: Please confirm whom the DPHS lads are , so far if my memory serves me correctly…….
3….Visser (grade 11)
5…..D Doep
7…..JL Doep
9…..Reece
10….Tedder(grade 11)
So only 3 from grade 12 …..unless I am mistaken ???
@Westers: When Rhino mentioned his Kings Park anecdote – I just knew that was coming. Just didn’t expect it to be from you. Very poor form Sir…….
@Rhino: What’s with these Glenwood guys (or old boys) and Kings Park?
@Gungets Tuft: Pretoria Boys High results (not in date order):
Pretoria BH 20 22 St Andrews
Bishops 15 20 Pretoria BH
Pretoria BH 23 10 SACS
Pretoria BH 46 6 John Vorster
Pretoria BH 25 23 M. College
Westville 22 17 Pretoria BH
Parktown 3 56 Pretoria BH
Pretoria BH 28 27 Jeppe
St Stithians 0 76 Pretoria BH
St Benedicts 31 39 Pretoria BH
Pretoria BH 17 17 KES
Pretoria BH 35 6 St Albans
Pretoria BH 70 14 St Johns
@RBugger: I would suggest all CW reps rested for the KC vs MC clash. Our province needs a good showing against the Bulls in their first game. I believe the CW side will be playing the Griffons on Saturday and Border on Tuesday in warm up games. It would be graet to see the no. 8 Tedder matching up against Goodsen
@Grasshopper
Haha.. I remember in matric we had a huge fight outside Sand Pebbles with GW okes and there cronies(slightly older chaps) – was hectic but we stood our ground. All happened from ure chaps throwin one our mates down the concrete bank at kings park and they were recognised outside sand pebbles and hence mayhem ensued….
@RBugger: Yes and College are still reeling from that flu bug 2 weeks on. Tharratt is definitely out and so are Ncgobo, Ngwenya and Coetzee. So a reshuffle needed in the College line while as you pointed out KC may have to find replacements for their 3 big fwds. Bevan Jackson is an easy pick. He looked to be in good form vs Hilton 2nds but without Zander around, it will require 2 inexperienced loose forwards to step up and be counted. Probably S.Tedder and really not sure who comes up with him. Maybe Bell to flank or hooker and Meaker to flank.
It’s bound to make this game into a really good one. A wounded MC team looking to bounce back. Not going to be easy to contain.
@oldschool: The core of that team has it’s origins at DPHS about 10 years ago. In 2 consecutive grades at DPHS they swept everyone. Add a few that went to Westville and elsewhere, that is MDs “dream team”. It has been (mostly) fun to watch them progress. To think that at least 4 of them were on Westvilles team sheet till the last minute in their Grade 7 year, had also accepted at College, withdrew at the last second.
@star: Star, you are a tenacious bugger – is it acceptable to you if KC win by a low margin over College, or are you looking for a full 40 points to accede?
@Gungets Tuft: Damn right. See you there. Do you think they will let me into the Old Boys Club for a beer afterwards – what with all my punting Kearsney as KZN’s No 1 subsequent to the Campbell disaster?
@star: Exactly. I take full responsibility for everything. See what a nice guy I am?
@ Buffel- I think I might just do that. I actually have a client on your premises You must forgive me if I will be supporting the Red,Blue( Sorry Black ) and White for obvious reasons. When does the 2nd team kick off as the winner will take line honors this year?
@ Old school- I did mean to be derogatory but if your point of 2/3 top ten teams most years is true then why only one top 20 in 2013 when as you say the side will go down as one not to be ” repeated”. Just a friendly observation. I have always acknowledged that it is a phenomenal team.
@ Greenblooded-you see it is all your fault
@greenblooded: have also been looking forward to schramm on goodsen! Heard that schramm may be out for Thursday as well as Dan du Preez! App both have knocks from the puma game
@beet: Beet – would you be able to find out who the boys, in addition to Matt Reece-Edwards, to have played 50 games for Kearsney 1sts have been. I think:
Matt Stevens
JC Strauss
Craig Symonds (1988)
@GreenBlooded: Invite me … I can attend a meeting like that … 2:30pm – yes?
sorry , should also add that College extend themselves annually !!!
@star: The College/Kearsney game on Thursday will set the record straight. Kearsney could be without their “twins” due to injuries yesterday in Middleburg but hope that the replacements play like they did at the beginning of the year . No excuses, if we win then we will be crowned no1 in KZN. Hope you come up and have a gander. The 2nd XV game should be a tight affair and cannot call it. Just will have to wait and see.
@star: KC always extend themselves my boet ……..most years we play at least 2/3 of the top 10 ranked sides …..even accepting an invite to play Grey Bloem last year in the 3rd term , with most of our stars out of the game ……..
I would say 2nd to Glenwood KC extend themselves more than any other KZN school ……and this coming from a school with only 640 lads ………
this year I believe , we could have played tougher opposition at KERF , but that would have denied some real clashes of some giants……also , we did play Boland Landbou and Framesby whom in most years are both up there in the rankings …….besides going on a tough Namibian tour……..
Your Westville side is very good , not the best Ville side I have seen in the last 10 years but still a very good SBR side , as Westville should have due to the sheer number of lads at the school combined with the great effort and structure that Westville put into there rugga …….but this Kearsney side in full flight would put 20/30 past you okes and possibly only let in a try ……
we will never know unfortunately due to the heavens opening up , but my boet , the difference is that KC have X factor all over the park , you okes have 1 or 2 X factor lads , granted you have plenty of heart and spirit ……but that would only take you to half time …..give your friendly neiehbours the credit they deserve …….as this KC side will not be repeated by a Private school let alone a large school in KZN in the foreseeable future ……
@star: I don’t know how PBHS get their ranking. Has anyone got their results this year. I know they beat College – in Pretoria, by a penalty in overtime.
I guess we will see in 4 weeks time on 27th July when they visit Goldstones. Pity it is after a very hard weekend, travelling to Affies on the 20th. Here’s hoping the boys are still in one piece after Craven Week and that tour to Affies.
@ KCOB-What the rankings shows is that KC has only played one Top 20 school( Paarl Gym(2) who beat them convincingly. Westville on the other hand has played 4 and was also convincingly beaten by Paarl Gym and Outeniqua(3). We did beat PBHS(5) and narrowly lost away to Grey High.
KC is a great side that possibly could have extended themselves more but if they win on Thursday I will be the first to go on bended knee.
To the Westville Boys you were on the canvas after Paarl Gym and Outeniqua but showed tremendous character to pick yourselves up and go unbeaten for 10 matches ending in that historic victory on Goldstones. In the past Westville teams have faded away. Not so this time. You have far exceeded expectations and made all Westville supporters very proud.
@TheGoose: Only 1. Everyone joining should be viewing themselves as a contributor
Anyway that write-up is so good I think it’s worth changing into a post on its own.
http://www.saschoolsports.co.za/rugby/rugby-rankings-for-17th-june-2013.html
@Engelsman: Haystek, who is one of the G11’s, moved from Kearsney last year and mostly played U16B.
Here’s the report from last year’s game which Hilton won 13-6. Was a good game just a few missed opportunies by both teams along the way.
http://www.rugbyrugby.com/news/more_news/southern_hemisphere/7002445/hilton_made_of_the_wright_stuff
@sharkie: Your comment intimates that you have obviously played this position to comment with such authority.
The game is most definately a team game and all the individual games form part of a collective which will give you success. Lets not down play the x factor or BMT, these are all a huge part ofthe game. In the words of the famous Kitch Christie, ” The difference between good and great is 1 second of anticipation.”
Well done to HC for a tigerish display…To KC, there were never going to be any easy games this year and you have been the team to Beet….I mean Beat this year!
Prinsloo came to the school in gr9, parents moved to Westville, the rest have come through the system, 4 boys are Grade 11, 2 of them played u16B last year, so all good rugby development. FYI hf1
@ Gungets :You’re right maye . Sorry, got a bit confused there. Been a long day.
@sharkie: These scores show that KC only conceded one try
@Griffon: I don’t know mate, looks like Engelsman was referring to. The current 1st side not coming from U15.
@ Gungets : It was meant for Horsy, I was responding to him about the 2011 16A beating Glenwood 16A with basically the same team that lost 43-0 the previous year. Engelsman is right, other players have moved down, while others have improved and moved up
@sharkie:
Yep. I think the Kearsney #8 at the time was Guy Francis, what happened to him??
All players were at kearsney in grade 8 but never played a team
@Griffon: I think your issue is with Engelsman, he says only 7 from U15.
Kearsney under 14 a to first team now only the following boys started in the under 14 a
Du Preez x2
Smith
Reece Edwards
Schramm to my knowledge only came into the side through he year so no not he same team at all
@ Horsefly : The only new player who was in that team was Prinsloo who had moved to Westville, not bought. Other players from the previous year had been dropped others moved up. So not that much change. In the side that ran out yesterday I can only count 3 people who havnt been at Westville since Gr 8 so I don’t know what you’re talking about.
@ Horsefly : The only player who was in that was Prinsloo who had moved to Westville, not bought. Other players from the previous year had been dropped others moved up. So not that much change
@ Engelsman- can you answer ou HF1 as you have followed this team from inception. Maybe this exercise can be done for all the first teams. I am sure Kearsney will be almost 100% from grade 8.
@Griffon:
Didn’t Westville get some new players during that period? If so then don’t use that to compare anything ever again.
I think even Glenwood has more players who were there from Grade 8 than WBHS…nothing to be proud of on Westvilles side
@star: Sorry, I see Engelsman has answered the question. Cross posting …
@star: How many of the players in yesterday’s Westville 1st team played in the Westville U14 and U15. You post implies a very settled side that has come through the ranks. How many of your U16’s from last year have come through?
@ Engelsman- but that is exactly the point as things change from U14 to Ists and therefore you cannot predict from age group results which is what Sharkie is trying to do,
@star: Only 7 boys in yesterdays 1st team played u14 and 15, Its not a great yard stick.
@ Star : Have to agree about age group results meaning little, another example is the 2011 16A’s who lost 43-0 to Glenwood in u15 to beat them by 10 or so points the next year at their home ground. Hopefully this years 16A’s will bounce back 2 years time although it won’t have the same look
@ Sharkie- We did not play St Charles( who got beaten by Voortrekker-our 2nds beat them 36-0) but did beat the team(GC) that beat GW by 57. We also beat NW by 45. You beat MHS without 6 main players and Hilton without 2 key players. We also beat Franesby by 44 while your margin was 17. Our result against DHS was the 2nd best at 39 but then we were away and you were at home. So all in all if you do not beat College by more than 40 we have you by 4 to 3 and that is giving you home ground advantage in the Framesby, DHS and College games. We did have home ground advantage iro NW. Time to man up my friend. The argument of previious results is also nonsense. If that was true then your 1st team next year would not have a chance as it has never beaten Westville through the age groups. The Westville team that demolished College yesterday got drilled by College at U14 AND u15 level.
@Sir Pius: Probably as a wing. I think the Kearsney u16 centre J.Tedder will be a player worth keeping a eye out for in a couple of years time.
@ Star : Agree about Murphy . Erasmus has not been able to play any sport this year due to a serious back injury. Heard its getting better and should be active in the 3rd term playing waterpolo most likely as I’v heard he’s quite a useful player. He should be playing rugby next year if the injury is monitored properly. @ Sir Pius : Iv watched Du Randt this season and enjoy watching him, but I think he’ll play 2nds next year with Fouche coming through from 2nds a maybe a move to 13 from Morne.
@sharkie: It’s fair comment on your part. The reports (and not just this one) do highlight the flashy bits and revolve around the tries, without giving much or any tribute to the engineroom. Kearsney’s tight 5 did lay a good platform and it wasn’t just in the scrums, which they have done a lot of this season.
But we definitely do have a slightly different opinion on weighting the factors that contributed to the win.
@ Grassy do you think Donovan Du Randt will play 1st side next year? He’s a brilliant player and I enjoy watching him.
@ Griffon- I think Murphy played in the 3rds. He has always been a quality and intelligent player and seems to have gained some physical form since last year. We are going to have lots of options next year. Do you know what has happened to Erasmus?
Star will you put in westvilles results against the following schools applying your logic and let’s see
Kearsney dhs. 74. 6
Kearsney Hilton 34. 9
Kearsney michaelhouse. 38. 5
Kearsney st Charles. 50. 0
Kearsney north wood. 30. O
Theses are teams that you have played let’s see and we can add in the college score on thursday
An underated player I saw in a losing College team yesterday was H.Tharrat who played GK last year. In the 15/20 minutes he played he threatened at the breakdown. Probably the few fetchers KZN has. Last year in the u16 age group him and J.Murphy from the Westville team were the top fethcers in the province. The latter could not go to trials because of a shoulder injury
@ Grassy- You know what emphasis I place on the 2 Ss( Spirit and Spine) and GW is starting to look seriously good in that regard. I think you will be one of the teams at the top of the pile next year.
@ Sharkie- I tell you what. You beat College by more than 40 points then the deal is done. After all we played on Goldstones and you are playing on Stott. :mrgreen:Seems fair.
@ Beet- How do you know about my Yips? You know me better than my wife
@ Grasshopper : Do you know if Thobejane was playing 2nds yet , as I remember there was a thing about him making the Academy team even though he was playing 4ths
beet differ in opinion slighty with you and give you a little example any 8th man and player the likes in question will run riot behind the kearsney pack especially when you are getting the right shoulder in the scrum and getting a lot of go forward ball. put cameron wright behind the kearsney pack and he would be even better. Thats not to say the players in question wouldnt perform behind a losing pack but the job is made easier so it would be nice at times to also read that the game was maybe won upfront in the tight five…but suppose we only see the big runs
star westville have done well but i honestly believe and this is a stupid debate because we will never know the answer but if you look at the history of this team against westville through the ages you will see the scores were quite big so why would it have been any different now. but lets leave it at that westville can claim there unbeaten season so can kearsney let the boys decide who was the best team in kzn
@beet: You are quite right about injuries being part of the game. It’s what makes depth key. Kearsney seem to have depth as evidenced by their win earlier in the season against Glenwood when both the Du Preez’s were missing if memory serves correctly.
@Engelsman: again well done Westville, great achievement!
@star: Some of the HC fwds really lifted themselves tho. The hooker Dale Russell, huge psychological bounce back this week with his lineout throw-ins. As a golfer who suffers from the yips you will understand better than all of us what it’s like to doubt yourself when you have to aim a target. Jason Gouws too. Super athlete. He’s bound to add a bit of weight in the off-season and he might be a talking point player next season. Also think having van Wymeersch at 8 instead of Baldwin worked better. Baldwin restored to his 6 position where he was good at closing shop around the fringes.
You play with the team you have, Grassy always to many “what ifs”or should have have been” in your posts. On the other thread you speak of College not getting up for the game because of no tradition, that is so tired. And very disrespectful to 15 Westville boys who played their hearts out for their school and their team mates.
@star: yep, next year is going to be very interesting. 11 Glenwood 1st team back next year, Tredoux, Mngadi, Van Niekerk, Coetzee, Khanyile, Jonas, Ngcobo and Joubert back with a few 2nd team guys, will be interesting for sure….go green!
@star: imagine the score if Westville had De la Rey, Weir and Pieters. Mind blowing!!
@ Grassy- and we are going to fire away Common Grassy we are not the devil and as the saying goes the more you know us the better. We are all on the same page iro of the BIG picture.
@ Beet- when I heard that Maseko and Weissing were missing , I had a
horrible feeling . The spine had been broken and Hilton were always going to fall away in the later stages. I still feel they have had a solid season and can hold their heads up high. They lost to the big 3 but they were away from home and against Westville and GW they were in the game till the very end. Go the Whites.
@beet: exactly my point over the past few weeks for Glenwood, losing Coetzee, Vermaak and Van der Heever has been huge. Those three stabilize the side. Anyway, Westville bloggers now have their ammo to mock Glenwood, but we used to it….
@sharkie: Yes Kearsney may struggle to reproduce the success of this year’s team in the immediate future, a team made good by the input of many quality players that have stepped up during the season, so agreed that in any game it’s the input of 15 players all the way.
But 15 players for Hilton as well. They’re a better team than 34-9 suggests. The absence of Maseko and Weissing had an impact. A no.8 and a lock. I’m going to be bold and say if Dan du Preez and Schramm also a lock and no.8 were taken out of the equation and KC played with two 2nd XV players, yesterday’s game would have gone down to the wire. Those 2 KC stand outs couldn’t have won without the quality support from their teammates but they brought the x-factor that contributed significantly to the 25 point difference in the end. No harm in that. It’s all part of the game.
@ Sharkie- I think you meant to say ” potentially” unbeaten in KZN. Westville are really hitting their straps and you would have been playing on Bowdens where KC have not won for well over a decade. A win on Bowdens is defintely missing on the CV as most players have ticked off Dixons and Goldstones. Gilfillan and Meadows might also have alluded some.
well done kearsney one more to go. this has been a great team effort although the same names get mentioned everytime in the reports there are 15 kids on the park. The truth is that Kearsney have had a really good squad so much so that even if some of the big guns werent there the team has still won and done really well. Good luck for College lets end with a big one. Will be a tough record to beat for the next teams coming through just a real shame that they couldnt have played westville and been unbeaten in Natal
