The Affies first half against Diamantveld was really really good. It looked like the Witbulle had played a few competitive matches together already. Their understanding, speed of execution and decisiveness were all outstanding.
I watched this match after the Kwaggas vs Nories game and the tempo by Affies was so much higher. 26-3 at halftime and if I didn’t know the final score, my guess would have been that the Diamonds were in for a 60+ drilling.
The second half started with many penalties conceded and sort of broke up the Affies rhythm. BUT big big UPS to Diamantveld. Plenty of character. So good to see that after being beaten up in the first half, they come out show so much pride for their jersey.
Lots of good Affies performances. Ruben Pienaar’s boot -wow. AHS got 3 50:22s. Forwards looked good. 9 was a handful. Janco was prominent and makes good passes but would like to see him used better as a gainline bully. I love the way Nories use their 12 Jared Coetzee to punch holes. 13 Theuns Maritz was my second unexpected high quality performance of the weekend after the Outeniqua no.8 Gareth Maree.
It will be interesting to see how the Affies coaches and backs adapt to more linespeed where they can’t make those comfy spin passes and they need a bit more improvisation and tactical alertness.

I agree. Two weekends in a row and the refs are really finding it a challenge to remember to call the above the sternum tackle as a penalty. I saw the attacking player dipping and getting penalised a few times.
I was also curious about jersey grabbing. Its never really been a tackle and involves limited contact but it can bring a ball carrier to the ground.

    Lekker dag

Haven’t seen the Diamonds team yet but holding thumbs that Simon Liversage is fit to play 12. He looks like a class act. It would set up a mouth-watering matchup in midfield against top rated SA Schools’ Janco Purchase. Interestingly I think both boys are good cricketers as well.
