Glenwood’s Corné the Ver-marquee player

Glenwood takes on the Monument Witbulle in a Premier Interschools game this afternoon. The match will be shown on a delayed broadcast at 21:30 on Supersport 1 tonight. One of the players well worth keeping an eye on is Glenwood fullback Corné Vermaak. Vermaak is in outstanding form at the moment. With each passing game he looks to have peaked but then seems to set the bar a little higher with his next outing. Although he’s always been a strong runner with a bit of toe, it really looks like he has worked hard on lateral movement as well this season and the dividends are paying off handsomely. His ability to change direction at pace has unhinged many defences. Apart from being a ballplayer, he’s an established goal-kicker as well. Vermaak’s influence on the outcome of games in Glenwood’s favour has been significant. There’s no doubt KZN supporters will be hoping he carries this form into Craven Week and contributes to the much needed x-factor required to beat the Bulls in their first match. The SA Schools fullback spot looks like it might already belong to EW Viljoen of Greystaat but keep an eye out for Corné Vermaak today and at the provincial tournament in July. He is bound to impress.

For today, the feeling is that Glenwood will have the firepower out wide to keep the scoreboard ticking over. It’s nothing new, they have been doing that for several weeks now with the exception of a muddy game against Hilton when conditions were not conducive to their brand of running rugga. Today it’s bone-dry though, so Monnas are going to have to work extra hard to shut the door in midfield  and not leave players unmarked on the outside. It’s been noted before that Monnas have a different more exciting style of rugby now that Hans Coetzee is back as coach, however for today one feels that their best chance for a victory is to totally dominate all forward exchanges.

Of the interesting battles that lie ahead are those of young local Koos Tredoux against highly rated WP target loosehead Frans van Wyk and Wiehan Jacobs versus Wandi Mazibuko as both loose-forwards are expected to play a loose ball in hand type game. The two Glenwood players who’ll have to make the biggest step up will undoubtedly be locks Kevin du Randt and Michael Teichman. Their opponents particularly Rhyno Herbst is very physical and can be  more than a handful on his day.

@TheGoose, should`nt be max 6 weeks if it is a grade 3 tear. There are already talks that worst case scenario he goes to the Sharks medical centre for treatment that cuts the recovery time in half.

Corne is currently still in hospital waiting for a scan of the muscle above his left hip as it seems he has torn the muscle. The scan will indicate the grade of the tear.

After reviewing the photos from the game, I was amazed at how well he lasted and how tough he is. Corné took some major tackles during the day and all seemed to connect to his lower rib area and kidneys. Hope he recovers well.

After his injury there was no fire power left in the Glenwood backs. Several handling errors by 11- his trademark. No 12 running insdie ONLY never passing a good ball…bur killing any move. No flair. The “dancing” of 11 with not a meter gained rewarded with a Craven week spot ? Seems very afraid to run forward and can’t take tackles.

Looked like Corne picked up quite a serious injury today.

Good luck boys! The locks look a little light so I’m worried up front, losing Coetzee and Van de Heever is huge. It’s basically Monnas pack vs Glenwood backs, usually the pack wins but if Glenwood can get some ball they could keep in touch. I would have played Potgieter at lock to bulk up the tight 5. Go Green!
