You’re saying that okes are playing first team only because they’re bigger and faster than other guys as if that’s a bad thing? Being bigger and faster than your opponents is pretty much the most important part of rugby. Wilco Louw isn’t playing for the Boks because he can throw great spiralling passes to the wing. And we spend the money to develop the other skills which you deem to be more important than size and speed – surely if we reduce the funding as you suggest, then it is those skills that will suffer? Because spending less money won’t make guys slower or smaller. The reality is that guys who have a genuine professional future in rugby don’t play club rugby anymore. The guys that have a shot at making it get contracts straight out of school and, while they may be seconded to clubs like Maties and Ikeys, they’re very much still on the books of the Stormers at that time.

And, add to that, that many of Maties’ best u20 players are playing for Maties’ first team or even higher, not for the u20s. E.g., if you add Olly Reid, Danie Kruger, Riley Norton, Reuben Kruger, Samuel Badenhorst and Dylan Miller into Maties’ u20 team (which they qualify for) they would smash all-comers there.

    Parts I agree with, parts I don’t.

For starters, the fixture Paul Roos sacrificed for the Affies fixture was Oakdale, not Wynberg. I believe the Wynberg fixture/WP day was part of the compromise for Durbanville entry. If I have it correct, outside of festivals, each WP-League team is only allowed 3 fixtures against non WP-league teams. (I would have also preferred to have the Affies fixture replace the Grey PE game instead of the Oakdale game).

Ito Maties u20’s, the quality of the Varsity Cup has gone down when compared to Por-level and schoolboy level, and Maties have also taken a step back since the money for Maties rugby dried up, so naturally the u20s would also go backwards.

This happened last year already, Berg didn’t play Landbou, Bosch didn’t play Gim, etc.
I’m also of the opinion that the WP fixture lists have nothing to do with Durbanville joining the A league but rather because schools have decided to play in fixtures that have more to do with national honours as opposed to regional honours. For example, Roos vs Affies is a new fixture, its got nothing to do with WP rugby. Festivals like Wildeklawer & Noord/Suid have also taken preference. Don’t get me wrong the fixtures at these tournaments are fantastic but maybe Roos should rather have replaced the Grey PE fixture for the Affies one because we are heading for a National league which is not what school rugby is about.
We are already spending way too much money on schoolboy rugby, rather spend the extra money on our club system. Half the schoolboys won’t even play rugby when they leave school & a lot of them are only playing in the 1st sides cos they are just bigger or faster then the competition.
Real rugby starts when they leave school, when the props scrum against props & not converted 2nd team flankers/hookers who are protected by the 1m rule. This is where the money should be spent, on the boys that have chosen to keep playing rugby at a high level & not where a lot of them will never play seriously again. Our U20 club rugby competition would be fantastic.
I saw the Maties U20 Young Gun side the other day & was shocked at how poor they are, losing 64-0 to UCT which basically tells you what’s happening after school. A couple of years ago before professionalism hit schools, Maties U20’s would’ve smashed allcomers by record scores.

That’s as a result of Durbanville joining the A-league. All of the Winelands schools will now miss one Southern Suburbs school per year. PRG’s missing Wynberg this year.

I completely agree. And to make matters worse it looks like this practise match has taken the place of the league fixture between Paul Roos and Wynberg?

Ja nee, I agree. The purpose of the day needs a rethink. I do understand that DHL Stadium is expensive to rent, but surely there should be other options? Would not have minded a day out to Boland Rugby Stadium either

This Day has lost a bit of its sparkle. We used to all ride buses to Newlands and play each other under the lights there. Last year it was moved to the Danie Craven and this year it’s taking place at PRG. Markötter is a great ground, but it used to be quite cool seeing your mates run out at Newlands – now it just feels like warm-up games for the season ahead.

Paul Roos not playing? Weird since it’s being played at their home ground…
