According to the Rapport newspaper WPRU announced that from 2020, between 20% and 25% of their provincial Craven Week players must come from schools that were not former Model-C schools.
The move is guaranteed to weaken the Western Province u18 teams and will almost certainly only impact on their Player of Colour (POC) selections.
For this year’s Craven Week, the POC quota requirement has been increased to 12 per team of which a minimum of 8 per team have to be on the field at any given time.
So statistically translated it means that from 2020 onwards the WP selectors will have to pick 3 POC per Craven Week team from the non-former-Model-C-schools of which 2 of these players will have to be on the field at any given time.
Initial feelings are that the decision will do more harm than good for POC development in WP.
