KZN 1st Team Rankings 2012 – updated

The Hilton win over Michaelhouse has made things a little fuzzy with regards to who the no.1 team in the province is.

There are a number of ways to rank the KZN Tier 1 teams.

To keep it simple, a pretty fair system of awarding 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss has been used below.

Scenario 1

Scenario 2

Please Note:

Since this is just an attempt to rank Tier 1 KZN rugby schools only, it excludes results against schools from outside the borders of KZN plus it limits the number of KZN schools to just those that play at least 5 or more games against the other traditional top KZN schools. This means that it is quite possible for a situation where one team is ranked higher than another in KZN only to be reversed when looking at the overall national rankings that obviously take ALL results against ALL teams into account.

Scenario 1 includes George Campbell and St Charles, 2 schools that each played 5 games against the other measured schools. In this scenario it is necessary to use an average points per game in order to gain parity because all teams would not have played the same number of games.

Scenario 2 excludes George Campbell and St Charles, leaving 8 schools that all played against each other this season and therefore should have eliminating the need for averaging. However with Hilton-Michaelhouse and College-Glenwood being a 2-leg affairs, an adjustment was required, so all points excluding Hilton and Michaelhouse’s have been recalculated by ÷7 & x8.

KZN beat Border by over 50 points(60-3 subject to final confrmation). Not really the practice you need before the week starts.I also think that the Border side must have been unsettled with all the selection issues.

If you’re interested in Kearsney’s UK cricket tour .. live score of the current game at http://www.webcricket.co.za/games/view/id/K5K125Jun12/

The were skittled out for 50, but look to be fielding strongly with Kings College Wimbledon at 7/4 !

@Pedantic, I third that! Great site beet and there is no aggro and sarcastic comments from some bloggers like on other sites, just a group of bloggers who love schools rugby, especially KZN schools rugby who respect each other opinions. Well so far that is..

Pedantic. Nope, also include Kearsney. They have the balls to play Grey so they must also be included. To be honest, I dont mind who gets the local honors now as we have 3 teams challenging the best around the country so rooting for the KZN teams, until we meet Glenwood that is, and then may the best team win on the day.

@All Black: Yep .. it’s Hilton that has mixed it all up like this. I think the top 4 stand out … only GW and College really have an opportunity to clarify things a bit so may be fitting that one of them grab the top spot.

@All Black, yep agreed College and Kearsney will have had equally as tough fixtures as Glenwood. Add Grey Bloem, Affies and College (who should be in the Top 20) to Glenwood’s list and that is 11 games against Top 20 opposition, ouch!! Added to that 3 or 4 games in the beginning of the season against very tough Argentinian Clun sides, so 24/25 fixtures in the season over 6 months, crazy!

@All Black, yep if College can win their final few fixtures then they are sure to be tops, however I think Affies will be very difficult to beat. If Glenwood (and these are big if’s) can beat College away and Grey Bloem at home, but lose to Affies away they could be tops. The Kearsney vs Grey Bloem game will put it all into some perspective. Glenwood & College supporters know all to well how hard it is against Grey Bloem in the Free State losing by heavy margins in the past, but this Grey Bloem side is their weakest in years, maybe ever…

Grasshopper: College play 8 of the top 20 from Rugby365 as well as 2 against PBHS who strangely do not feature, even though they lost to Affies by 2 and beat KES twice. So ‘arguably’ 10 games against the top. PBHS feature in the other top 20 lists on other sites. Top 20 teams Affies, Paul Roos, Grey P.E.,KES, Westville, Glenwood, MHS, Kearsney. Kearsney will now also have played 7 or 8 of the top 20. Now you look at MHS and see they only play 3, all of which are local sides. College are at 21, behind Westville?????

Pedantic: But then KC and MHS lost to Hilton and College beat Hilton quite easily. Sorry but the results are all over the place so you have to look at the big picture here. My genuine belief is that a 3 way play off between Glenwood, College and Kearsney would have been good. Not going to happen so pretty undecided. If Kearsney beat Grey then I am inclined to go with them or if either Glenwood or College beat Affies then I go with them. Affies, I think are the best in the country after Paarl Gym so that will be a huge test. Much happier now that Kearsney are playing Grey.

    Pinetown 74 0 W
    DHS (OB’s Day) 34 9 W
    College 16 16 D

    Points for: 410
    Points against: 291
    Played: 17
    Lost: 5
    Won: 10
    Drawn: 2

8x Games against Top 20 opposition (Rugby365 rankings) – Paarl Gim (no1), Outeniqua (no6), Dale College (No7), Noord Kaap (No 8), Framesby (No12), Michaelhouse (No14, Kearsney (No16) and Westville (No 19). 4x Games against Top 10 opposition. I don’t think any school in KZN can claim that level of opposition…

While I like the look of Scenario 1 – I think Scenario 2 is probably the fairest – let’s see how GW and College average out after their Goldstones clash – that will give us the final undisputed ranking :)

The fact that KC and MHS both beat their local rivals MC and GW makes it very hard to pick the latter schools as genuine #1’s in KZN.

Any of the top 6 could beat each other on the day. There is no clear cut winner this year, but the top 4 in both systems has College, Kearsney, Michaelhouse and Glenwood. Personally, I think because of College and Glenwood much busier and hectic seasons that they should get additional points for wins outside of the province against Top 20 opposition and also take into consideration the number of fixtures. I mean Michaelhouse have played about 12 games (stand to be corrected) and Glenwood will play 21, a huge difference in workload. For me the game at Goldstones on the 4th of August is the game to decide the top of the table…..but I would be biased as a Glenwood supporter
