Coulson called up as cover

Glenwood wing Dylan Coulson who many felt was unluck not to have made one of the two KZN under-18 representative teams this year, has been asked to provide short-term cover for his injured teammate Corné Vermaak.

The KZN Craven Week team travel down to East London today. They will meet Border Schools at Buffalo Park tomorrow morning in a friendly which as a result of cancelled matches against the Pumas and at Bondedag, will now be their first proper outing as a team.

Coulson will earn a cap against Border. Vermaak is suffering with an ankle injury but is expected to regain fitness and travel to Craven Week.

He has the right to call himself a KZN Schools u18 player which is good enough, so when you update your list make sure he’s listed as a provincial representative. :-)

getting back to Dylan as this is dedicated to him, i wish him all the best , i think you will see him play outstandingly , for me if he had seen more ball this season, he would have performed even better, too many times he got man and ball or such small space he had to really work,
his work rate is good, defensively he is outstanding , yes he had a knock on or two, and didn’t deserve the yellow card he got , just unfortunately didn’t get enough ball with space

Greenhopper: Yes, heard that residence thing as well. All about captive audience at games, I would imagine.

Grasshopper: No arguments about size etc of the institution. The discussion I had revolved around campus excitement, pink shorts and balls, charities etc that all played a part in the success of the Varsity Cup. UNISA is the biggest ‘Varsity’ in the world (I think) but they would add nothing to the hype of Varsity Cup. If a deal has been signed that is done and dusted then I am surprised that there is still ‘talk’. If Varsity College have a clear cut route to the Varsity Cup I would be advertising in every way possible to attract would be students who are rugby players.
BEET, perhaps you could do an article based on the actual truth here. I am sure the Varsity College/ Academy people would have a signed contract etc and can take away all the doubt here? When you deal in rumors, agendas, preferences, loyalties etc you dont know what to believe.

my understanding is that lots of money has been spent on this drive, to get OLD BOYS and VC into Varsity Shield and then Cup, my understanding from VC management was that this certification had been completed and they had to deliver on the issue of accommodation, residences which they were addressing and that that had passed all the other entry requirements,
personally this would make a big difference to the VC set up and draw additional members , what would happen is that Collegians and Rovers might not be the only Dominate Clubs , as they draw heavily off the Sharks academy sides , simply closer , and hence the Clubs are strong in the premier division, with VC coming along with this , you might just find the emergence of a NEW Boy

@All Black, intersting that because Varisty College actually helps UNISA graduates pass their exams, so in it’s affliation with UNISA could be considered a part of a ‘proper’ university. UNISA is the biggest distance learning university in the world so there is no argument that they are not big enough or old enough. UNLESS Varisty College no longer offer this service, not sure as I was at Varsity College over 10 years ago now studying my B.Comm

I was told that there would be opposition to any non traditional Varsity playing in the CUP. I think you will find that the shield is one thing but the Cup a totally different scenario. At the end of the day it is about what is good for the brand of Varsity cup. Perhaps my informant was prejudice towards the existing KZN Varsities, which would be understandable. This is about TV coverage, crowds(students), fan fare etc. Would be very sad, in my opinion, that a traditional varsity is not given the support over a part time institution with limited tradition etc. Unfortunately you are dealing with rumors and here say. I dont believe that it is cut and dried.

@A-B and Hopper – I was also under the impression that VC were aiming at the ussa promotion / relegation game for Varsity Shield? Have they been rejected ?

Hopper: The apparent response from Varsity cup organizers is that Varsity College will not be recognized as a true Varsity. We have a side in the cup already but internal politics dont allow too much support as it will affect the Academy. Really sad.

@ all black, the things you have mentioned here have much merit , i have heard of the grow disconcert with all of the Sharks Academy , but Rumor has it that Old Boys and Varsity College are getting in on Varsity Cup and this will or might hurt the Sharks Academy

I think they can both play lock/8/flank so will be interesting. I am sure there is also the small matter of studying. Sharks have nothing to offer as far as decent varsity so a balanced option is always going to be Tuks and Bulls. I wonder how many KZN school boys are moving away? Between Stellenbosch and Tuks it is huge. Sorry, but the Sharks Academy which is now cricket and soccer cannot compete when it comes to overall grounding/education for youngsters. I wonder if more asistance would be forthcoming for our Varsities in Dbn and PMB if it was not for the Academy? In the 80’s our varsities attracted guys from other provinces. Now it is the other way around.

@All Black, interesting that Smith signed for the Bulls. I heard Carel Swart also signed for the Bulls, so they would have signed 2 No8’s from KZN, unless they see Swart as a flank or lock…

Grasshopper; Exactly. When College play Glenwood they watch Coulsen. All the others you mention as well as Coetzee, College centre/wing but he is still std 8 so his time will come. Smith signed for Bulls so enjoying holiday.
