@Andre T: Ja, T-tjie, Hy is beslis n legende by Bog se Etophia.

The 2 matches I will broadcast live is; Boland vs. EP at 13h50 and WP vs. SWD at16h00. I will also try and get the results of the other matches.

    Die volgende wedstryde vind plaas:

    @Balikibaba @Ploegskaar
I have watched the second half. These are my comments:

    1) Penalty count 5-1 in favour of BL.
    2) All penalties seem legitimate – ref seems to make the right call.
    3) In terms of the incident around the pushing and shoving. The penalty was for the Bishops player who pushed the BL player in the face. Penalty was legitimate.
    4) At 35:05, perhaps a marginal high tackle but didn’t look dangerous (more around the shoulders than anything).

On the whole, I would say the ref was pretty good. He let the game go. Penalty count was not over the top.
I thought both teams were very good and either side could have won the game – Bishops missed too many conversions.

I would say that it was an entertaining game and rugby was the winner. The ref didn’t negatively influence the game.

@pietretief: We clearly have different views on the purpose of schoolboy rugby. We wo’n’t convince each other otherwise so let’s agree to disagree.

There’s as little value in progress when you play weak opposition and score 50 every week, as it is when you play opposition too strong for you and be on the receiving end of 50 pointers every week.

On why Dale go to Kearsney – Dale have toured the country since the 30s, and played in festivals since St Stihians in ’84. Touring is part of the culture. It has more to do with playing against schools they don’t regularly play rather, and the experience that comes with touring rather than trying to play top teams. If Dale wanted to ‘stretch’ themselves, I can think of at least 3 long standing fixtures that they could drop and hunt for ‘big boys’ to stretch themselves against instead. We get our big tests against our traditional rivals.I think I turned out just fine

    @Galaza: “CW is a farce”

Disagree. I think there may be some discussion about selection (as there is – and is very obvious on this blog alone – just refer to the KZN bloggers) – but to call it a farce is a little strong.

CW remains a very credible strength vs strength competition – and I’m not sure that there is something quite the same anywhere else globally? It still delivers some excellent rugby from really class players. A lot who gon on to greater things.

I think even if we look back to the 1980s – there were plenty of example of great players who were overlooked (see below – all who missed CW selection at their provinces)

If results on the rugby field are your idea of a good marketing strategy then results will mean something to you. I think all these schools have lost the plot anyway. Too much emphasis is placed on buying players etc , let the kids from that area play in the 1st teams then maybe we could have strength verses strength. Keep the focus guys on education. Lets face it CW is a farce anyway , no reasons needed !

@Playa: Guaranteed, you will not grow in life if you are not stretched, if you want an easy season it can be picked, if you want your school and boys to grow then they have to play stronger opposition. Why does Dale go to Kearsney if they do not want to play against the best sides?

Sorry – late response. It’s been a busy day. It was Jean Pretorius from Midlands Referee’s Society. Done a few Tier 1 1st team matches in recent times and did a great job in a very tough game today I thought. Cool calm and collected – just what is needing in a tough game.

Wow – what a game. Did you notice the boys lying on the field at the final whistle? 30 lads who gave it their all and then some. Not one of them left an inch out on Gilfillan this afternoon. A match befitting the auspicious occasion of the 50th anniversary of Gilfillan Field I thought……….

@McCulleys Workshop: the 8 players from Glenwood will know what to expect having played the best packs in the country. When the chips are down they will know what to do having learnt from experience. If you think experience doesn’t count then sorry boet you don’t know much about the game. Winning Sanix meant nothing, the sides there are not the best in each country.

@McCulleys Workshop: beating Paul Roos, Paarl Boys, Monnas etc at age group level will give those players belief they can beat the best. It’s not showing this year as the team is still young up front but it will show next year. Looking forward to playing House on Dixons in 2016 with Palvie running hard!

@McCulleys Workshop: GW at home, a test but they are not strong this year. Nicely selected season for House. I don’t agree with the 20 plus games a season, said it many times before. 10 local games, plus 2 or 3 at festivals and 1 sortie to JHB/Pretoria is enough. It’s like the Poms claiming an unbeaten season vs Canada, USA, Romania, Uruguay, Italy, Samoa & Fiji. Awesome stuff but not tested….

@Stripes: I do think it is a good MHS side, as was the 1999 or 2000 side as well as both 2007 and 2008. As I’ve said before, I think they are very well coached and have some very talented players and have been the better side provincially this season, although not playing Westville. I think they could have had an even better season if they had played tougher opposition at the Easter weekend. It’s a little like studying really hard for an exam, only to be given an easy paper. I am not however an advocate of these transprovincial relocations of whole schools multiple times a year for the purposes of rugby and bragging rights, nor do I think it would make MHS a better rugby school.
@Grasshopper: I agree, because Glenwood were certainly not a test! I note that GW have improved over the season due to their numerous out of province sorties to play the big guns, not … And I sure hope they can stand up. It’s a stupid theory of yours Hopper.

@Balikibaba: Sorry, but a battle of snap-shots is silly, I was equally aggrieved by the last Bishops try that was scored after they should have been penalized for what must have been a 30sec hold, likewise an earlier try scored from a ball that came out the mouth of the scrum on the blind. You lost the game because of Boland tries in the last quarter scored from a line-out overthrow, poor D in the 13 channel and your pillars going awol for the last 2 tries. BTW, Nathan Barry is one of the best refs in WP, he calls it as he sees it and has done so consistently for the past few years. It’s never nice to chuck a close game, believe me I have been on the wrong side of tight ones enough, so best to just suck it up and move on

@Stripes: yeah enjoy it! As an example today, Glenwood started with 6 players who were fringe players early in the season. Mchunu, Botha, Klopper (starting front row), Ruan Van Rensburg, Jaydon Morgan & Ilunga Mukendi all didn’t start today. All of these guys would have made a difference today. Klopper did play a short while today…

@Ploegskaar: Ploegie…..I have no sour grapes. That ref was not rational.

Let’s take a look at just this ONE odd decision.

Here is a link to the game. At 35.05. High tackle by Boland on Bishops player. Should have been Bishops penalty. But ref gives penalty PLUS 10 meters (for something – not sure) to Boland.

Then, earlier, at 32.50, the Bishops boy FIRST gets pushed by Boland player. Then pushes him back and they push each other. PUSH. In S15 those do not get penalised even. Why schoolboy rugby? But seems the linesman had to have his say.

Both these incidents directly contributed to Boland scores.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esJTxDAC-ts&feature=iv&src_vid=SMVYBZBLqmQ&annotation_id=556119ad-0000-2b75-84ba-001a1141511a

What was the penalty count in the 2nd half?

Bishops will always play high risk rugby, and, yes, some stupid decisions. And well done to the Boland boys for NEVER giving up. Great spirit.

But, no, Ploegie, I would like some comment from neutral people on that 2nd half reffing performance.

As I said, we lost to SACS and reffing was good. We lost to Boishaai and were DESERVEDLY penalized by Kaplan because we were under pressure at ruck time and lost fairly.

I can’t say the same about the ref in this game. Sorry. Some very irrational decisions.

@Stripes: they are a good side, but what sort of injuries & attrition would they have if they played the likes of Monnas, Affies, Grey Bloem, EG Jansen, Noord Kaap etc like Glenwood, Kearsney & Westville have. Regular Top20 sides. What would happen if suddenly their pack was going backwards, that is a real test. Hopefully the House Boys in the Craven Week side can stand up when tested….

House won 94-3 against SCC a very slick performance against weak opposition. I understand the opinions that say this side has not played against the top sides but I still think they are the top side in KZN. Also I think they would do a lot better against the top sides than most people think. Well played House next week against College is going to be interesting.

@Balikibaba: I suppose it’s about perspectives and who you support. It was a game of two halves in which Bishops capitalized on Boland mistakes in the first half and converted it into points. Second half and fourth quarter especially Bishops lost shape and discipline while making numerous consecutive errors. To knock the ref is just plain sour grapes, fact is Bishops played the wrong rugby in the wrong areas, while boring Boland played the same structures from min1-70 and kept faith with their systems. 33-8 is absolute stront, 28-13 yes, and then your boys buckled. In heaven you may have pulled the game off, but on earth we won it today, without help, just guts and self belief

I have just witnessed one of the most one sided reffing performances I have seen in a long time.

Look, I don’t mind losing. Bishops lost to Boishaai a few weeks back. Great reffing. great game. Bishops lost. Boishaai won.

But what I saw today at Boland was a shocker. And one has to question why this keeps happening out there on the plaas.

Bishops at one stage were 33-8 up. Then something happened. I am not sure. All I know (and I have not done the exact analysis), but the ref decided to start penalizing the proverbial cr*p out of Bishops.

I am not sure how many penalties Boland got in that second half (including Bishops being marched back 10 meters for no known reason) but I do know it was easily double digits. Now you may be asking how many penalties Bishops got in the second half. Once again I am not 100% sure but I THINK it was…..wait for it……….ZERO!!!!!!!!

How does a team go from being 33-8 up lose 39-38? Look, well done to the Boland boys for never giving up, but someone needs to have a look at this tape.

And before anyone says I have sour grapes…….

Bishops lost to Boishaai FAIR AND SQUARE!
Bishops lost to SACS FAIR AND SQUARE!

But today was HIGHWAY robbery! That ref should be ashamed.

Also I am tired of all this negative talk about GWs chances against Monnas.
GW have some very talented players and need to look no further than their performance against College for inspiration. I am sure Monnas have taken note and will show due respect.

@MSP12: I didn’t know that. Maybe this could be our year  But I hear we were 32-5 up against Kingswood, and the match ended 32-26, so it doesn’t look like we’re at our best either.Bosch vs Winnaar at 10 will be very interesting. Both teams have similar sides to last year’s, and that encounter ended 44-38 to Grey so I expect a humdinger…weather permitting. We don’t get to beat Grey often nowadays so I hope it’ll be one of those rare occasions.

I have a feeling there is going to be a massacre on Dixons this weekend, I hope not but Monnas beat EG and EG humped Glenwood by 30. I know it’s not linear like that but if Glenwood’s forwards don’t stand up its going to be a very long day for them….eish!

Hopefully ou GT has done a recce to find the Hilton equivanlent of the bowling club, just to take the edge off before the 1st team match which should be entertaining.

@playa, interesting contest between Grey and Dale this weekend, Grey Pe had 5 serious injuries against St Andrews doubt very much if those boys will be ready for Dale.So Dale on home turf could be a very tight contest, also depends where Bosch plays, at 10 he will be tough for Dale to handle.

Some good matches this weekend…exciting! Am new to the blog and love following the banter and the rivalry. Have been intrigued at some threads of late speaking of the depth of schools and what it is that gives a school bragging rights. Is it the performance of the 1stXV or is it the general results on the overall given day? The rankings a little bit lower than the top 5 would be interesting then. I think it is a given that the top 5 deserve to be where they are with Grey College sneaking up when it come to overall results but a few and they shall remain nameless need to be bumped down a bit if this was the case. If I look at KZN my results would look like this on overall scores…

    1. MC
    2. Westville
    3. Glenwood
    4. Kearsney, Hilton and House
    5. The rest

    What do you think?

PS.So where do I get my MC badge for my name???

@QC86 Thanks for the info pleased for Morgan and Selborne, looking forward to his contribution for the remainder of the season. Sad for Grant, saw him at the Greame rugby day , said he was looking forward to the season, this must have been before the injury to his knee, was confirmed. He has a great future, beyond school, the knee will heal, more rugby awaits, I am sure Selborne have missed him as well.

@QC86: Eish! My heart goes out to Grant. To end your high school career like that must be devastating. Happy for Morgan – must have been a bitter-sweet moment for your boy. I was in Std 9 when I dislocated my collarbone against Queens in the second game of the season and had to sit out the rest of the season. My team beat Selborne the next week . I finished high school never having played in a winning team against Selborne, but I lay claim to that victory though I wasn’t on the field. He’ll be a better man after this, knowing his mates can do well even without him, and him supporting them throughout.

@spilly: He played for 18 min,had tears in my eyes when he ran on and then i had this sadness for Grant ,knowing he won’t be back must have gutted him.He was rusty and unfit, but the nature of the game did not allow him much chance to settle, made two clean breaks and one lead to a try.He had one high speed run that would have tested his leg and all looked fine.Happy days, the team has missed him big time.
