SA HP u16 Squad 2012

After much delay, the 50 player strong HP under-16 squad has finally been published. KwaZulu-Natal has four representatives, while the Lions have nine and Western Province plus the Free State contribute eight boys apiece. Grey College from Bloemfontein is the best represented school with four followed by Glenwood with three. The players will attend  a training camp from 30 September to 7 October at the Paarl Gymnasium High School, where they will receive instructions from a range of nutritional, conditioning, coaching and mental skills experts. Part of the aim of the High Performance programme is to identify players who show signs of early promise and then get them into the HP system so that they can be track and offered advice.

@PlayFlair: Hi Playflair. Let us know which school you support.

The selectors are SARU National and SA School Selectors. Dawie Theron, the SA u20 coach also has input. There is a new move towards picking players based on future potential and not just what they offer here and now.

@Grasshopper: @kcob: We’ve seen that good players help a lot to make good teams but there isn’t necessarily a directly proportional relationship.

@Grasshopper: @Grasshopper: Grassy, I am sure! I didn’t mean to come across as being completely negative, but it just does not sound all the right players whom have massive futures were considered. I heard the purpose of the HP u16 squad was to put serious thought into those kids whom have clear futures at national level in 5 – 10 years. I know it’s hard to think that far ahead, but the principal is to mould them and give them the skills to carry them there.

That’s why I think was strange some Westville and college guys were omitted, because they do lookalike they have very bright futures.

The concept if sound; nurture your future, but like the yanks do with their folders, picking the key kids is the important thing.

Talking about college, Darren Goodesen. I love the kid. He was at Prep and he’s a great kid, with huge skills, but just seems to be staying the same size. What about him, moving to a open side flank role this coming year and perhaps wearing that famous red, black, white?

Another kid I wanted to talk about is a kid named Jaco from GW. He played fly half inside my son at Craven Week u12 in 2008. Where is he in themix at GW?

Another good player is Cliffy Egbrinks kid from Michael House?

Maybe this should be for another thread – Kids to look out For 2013

@kcob, I agree. The 3rd best Under16 side in KZN gets 3 reps and the best and 2nd get none. Seems very strange. I’m not complaining though…..

Sounds like a croc to me. I cannot believe Westville, or College did not even get one guy in there. Especially college, they played some good schools and have not lost a game!

This HP this a development gimmic!

@beet: Surely there cannot only be one hooker in a squad of 50?..Beet are you sure about the positions of Adrian Snyman, Mametsa and Brendon Smith?

@Grasshopper: Ja but i’d imagine that many of these kids are already on bursaries at good rugby schools where they have been able to make the step up and go to GK Week and leave an impression. So the rugby programmes at their existing schools must be decent, making recruiting them that much more difficult.

@Beet, obviously Northwood and maybe others have done some recruitment outside of the province at grade 10 level. According to the Headmasters agreement this is OK. Schools in other provinces are going to start getting fed up with this sort of activity very soon…
