@Pietretief: I suspected something like this might happen. Drosdy is always fired up against big guns and perform less well against other good schools a notch lower.

    @Studebaker:

@Hanswors Goeie brokkie advies!

Jy is so reg.

My punt is …….

@Westers: Was it not the #9 that was knocked out?

If he was, then the sensible thing is 3 weeks off. It’s tough, but necessary – the boy was unconcious for at least 20 – 30 seconds – that is a significant time.

@Amalekite: The Westville coaches seem to do this every year. The side only gets settled over Easter, but more by accident than design. And most times the changes happen around the 9, 10 and 12 positions.
It doesn’t help that the 2nds no 9 will not be considered for the 1sts from what I hear on the grapevine.
But what worries me is that there have not been many changes to the pack, yet the 2nd team pack played with real purpose and structure on Saturday and the much vaunted 1st pack looked clueless as a unit. Could it be the coaching?

@beet: I have to agree with you Beet. However, I’m not surprised as they just keep on chopping and changing the entire backline. It boggles the mind that after 7 or 8 games, they still have not settled on a combination. This does nothing to help build the boys confidence. You also cannot expect any fluidity. It’s really a pity, as they have some decent players, who could develop into a decent team, if they were given the opportunity to play with each other more often…..

I agree Beet one could see their game plan …pod middle and then quick ball wide they had 2 forward passes which would have been another 14 points. One can see F Lubbe input in this College side. Westville just need to play in the right part of the park …. they cannot keep running from their own try line…. built phases with a dominating pack…. be patient and then unleash the speedsters… earn the right to go wide

College had Westville in every department today….. the breakdown was easily won by College with very few College players committing to the breakdown. The gamble with the 3rd team 9 did not work. To move your best backline player Ball into centre does not make sense. A big pack but no gameplan. Difficult to identify a game plan in the 3 games for Ville in the last 3 weeks.

@Rugbyman: Famous kickers that missed in front of the poles (from close range) include Dan Carter, Aron Cruden, Sias Ebersohn etc. I will never forget the now billionaire businessman Lance Sherrel’s missed kick that contributed to the Fee State beating Province. So nothing is guaranteed indeed.
However, probabilities suggest a larger chance of making a kick compared to scoring a try.

@Buffel: For me the spine of the team are the key decision makers at 8,9 and 10. They really need to settle there. Also while the no 8 has been very good on defence and on go forward ball , I would like to see more linking moves from the base eg bringing the wings in on the blind side or inside channel.
I also agree with Beet that we should play more traditional rugby through the strength of the tight 5 and release the backs once the recycle phase has got the SABS stamp of approval.

I really dont think Garsfontein is scared of playing any team.. not even Monnas or Grey! They are a quality side..on the contrary I think other teams playing them should be watchful … a wounded bear is dangerous! Same goes for EG Jansen and Kempton who will no doubt lie back and wish for the season to end. Just looked what Kempton did after they lost to Jeppe ,what Grey did after their draw , even MV after a not so good start. Two things can happen after an unexpected loss .. one is the team can learn from it and use the nightmare to bounce back or they can lose confidence in their ability… Sure Garsies, EG and Kempton will bounce back with great vigor..

Something I need to clarify… I said in one of my posts that in our game against Kempies on Saturday that we didnt go for poles to draw and that the boys wanted to win… I then said the kick wasnt a guaranteed 3 points… some people read the comment and thought that we didnt have the confidence in our flyhalf and goal kicker. This wasnt the case! We have confidence in him and he probably would have kicked it over had we asked him to kick… All I meant was, that no kick is 100% guaranteed, no matter who kicks…. I certainly was not trying to say that we didnt believe in our kicker…

If my post led anyone to believe that we didn’t back our goal kicker, I apologise!

Garsies finished number 1 in the group as a result of the Marais Viljoen win… Again just proof that anyone can win on the day… we will play Pietersburg in the quarters on their home field, and that will be as tough as nails…

@star: Going to be interesting. I hope the staff come to their senses and play Kitchin at Scrumhalf and move Schlemmer back to flyhalf. It was a stuttering performance last week with the Westville backline stuck in first gear. No flow at all and not one of the backline running onto the ball with a majority of the passes being straight at the man or behind. If they perform on Saturday like they did against Northwood then they are in for a long afternoon.
Front foot ball is what you need and with Kitchin you get a good boot off the base and speed around the fringes. His pass is strong and accurate so he needs to be on the field not sitting on the bench and unfortunately there has to be a casualty . Let us see who is selected come game day.

@star: It’s going to be an interesting match. Westville are expected to once again come with a big forward surge but have they figured out a viable attacking game plan yet??? Westville would do well to watch how Michaelhouse recylce the ball. Take the ball through a few phases with the help of good support players and then let the backs play basic old fashioned rugby.

I don’t know much about College this year but on paper it looks like their strength might be their backline. Last year College struggled to get their backline going in the earlier part of the season and the solution seemed to be Mac vd Linde at 10. So thinking along those lines maybe College should consider taking a page out of Kwaggas coach Piet Cloete’s strategy book and play van Blerk at 10 on attack and 15 on defence, alternating with Kriel.

Well I thought Garsies would be smiling at Kempies result coz it means Garsies no longer play Nellies in the QF and I thought that game would be in Nelspruit but as it turns out all the games are in Pietersburg and guess what that’s who Garsies now have to play, the home team. Should be fun.

Yes the Kempies lost against Marais Viljoen was indeed unexpected. AS far as I can recall Kempies played 03 tough matches within a week, Jeppe and Garsfontein. That is a lot to ask for so early in the season. Wonder how this will affect that group now??On the other hand, EG Jansen is licking their wounds after their tough encounter against Monument and reflecting where they could improve..And preparing well for their first game at Kearsney..guess who that is??

@Playa: I am sure they will Playa.

The scrummaging of Rondebosch impressed me. They put Paul Roos under a lot of pressure and their 3rd try was after a tighthead close to the goal line of Paul Roos. It seems that Zain Davids is going to stay at 12. IMO he needs to be closer to the action and should be among the loosies.

I have to admit I expected more from the boys in Maroon. Nico Leonard hardly ever touched the ball at outside centre. His 2nd touch of the ball was after about 30 minutes and he scored. He almost scored the equalizer right at the end as well.

@PRondersteuner: It seems that Hein and the boys have some work to do. The scrums and lineouts were not good at all.
