The SA under-16 High Performance training camp did not go ahead this year. These are the players that were chosen for the camp.
Official word from SARU: The South African Rugby Union (SARU) is in the process of aligning its Junior High Performance programmes in accordance to the Long Term Player Development Model. This will enhance training and monitoring from Under-16 to Under-20 level and will allow for the development of even more junior provincial players.
For information purposes only, the following squad was selected from the 2013 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Under-16 Week. These players will be monitored as part of the Provincial High Performance programme for 2014.

@Koos Roos:Koreksie = Bader Pretorius
also on Bader Pretorius not even making the squad……ludicrous!!!
agree with Bog & BuffelsCM & Koos Roos
really sad that not 1 Paul Roos kid made the squad but we had quite a lengthy thread about them not even making the WP GK squad really bar 1, so like Koos Roos said….over the next 2yrs they’ll need to work extremely hard to show why they should have been there!
all we can do is hope they are treated fairly in future
@jakes: Sorry Jakes, he is extraordinarily patriotic, please excuse him. Back to the topic, the survivorship bias of younger level CW/GK players converting into senior CW players is erratic at best, when a side like PRG producers the type of U16 season they did, to have so few players represented provincially and hence having no representation in the HP squad, is astounding, certainly to me. And therefore I think there is limited benefit at looking at how many players convert from JNR CW, to GK to SNR CW, and I guess we can’t determine which sides will have great first sides based on their U16 performance a year or two earlier.
@jakes: this was originally a KZN site, Beet ex Kearsney. Just saying….
KZN has about the least representatives here but their supporters are taking over the blog. Talking about millionaires and billionaires and all else except rugby. Nee man nee. lets talk rugby
@BOG: Ou Bog, vanjaar se PRG o16 ‘s moet maar die vlg 2 jaar op die veld die praatwerk doen. Ek voel ook Bader Prinsloo is ongelukkig. As daar beter losskakels as hy is, moet hulle dem goed wees!
@BOG: Haha, might be an idea, put a turbine on Ernie Pierce weir (at the start of the Dusi marathon) and feed the Neighbourhood. But no, the tech is not a big user of power. My tech friends tell me that the right “core infrastructure” with POE switches, backed up by a decently sized UPS and it it sorted. Put 30 solar panels on the school roof and even the winter sun will give enough power to keep it running.
Me, I just reckon they put the 2nd formers on bicycles and make em pedal for power.
@star: keep it tidy.
@Gungets Tuft: With all that hi-tech in place, all that remains, is a reliable and steady supply of electricity. Possible solution, is a small power station. Surplus can be sold out and funds generated, ploughd back.
@McCulleys Workshop: I am moonlighting as an intellectual tonight. Towing starts when all the p#sscats leave the pub.
@Grasshopper: See, when I post about College it is not as a comparison. Comparisons are odious at the best of times. By telling you what College are doing – not plans – reality, I am not trying to pretend they are better or worse than everyone else. People commented on the relative decline of College vs the rest. There are actions (not plans) on the go to take a step up again, I hinted, okes asked.
As for College seeing Glenwood as a “threat”, you are going to have to help me out there. Perhaps my definition of treat is different to yours, because this College boy sees no threat. Threats to me are sociopolitical, criminal etc, not other schools. If you mean we respect the competition, sure, but that respect is not 20 years old. Let me quote from Jimeloyo Ji ..
“… the schools initial matches with College, starting in 1921, were rather one sided – and not in College’s favour. It took 5 matches between the schools for College to register its first victory, in 1927. But College was to have good reason to be glad of its contact with Glenwood. During the bleak period, in a rugby sense, of 20 years from 1925, Glenwood was to be the only school over which College maintained a healthy advantage. This situation continued for the following 20 years as well. After winning one of two fixtures in 1946, Glenwood had to wait until 1964 for its next victory. It followed that win with two more in 1965, and a further win in 1966. Seven victories since then (up until 1900 – my words), more than any other school has achieved in the same period, have made its teams dangerous opponents.
Glenwood has often had little difficulty matching College on a physical basis in rugby. It’s teams over the last couple of decades have been big and strong …… like College they have sought physical confrontation rather than avoided it.
…..
Glenwood’s record over the last 20 years (1970 – 1990 – my words) entitles it to the greatest respect, and this it receives from College. The two matches played each year are always among the highlights of the season and every College team knows that nothing but its very best will suffice”
Why I bother to reproduce this with my 2-thumbed typing skills is this. If you think Glenwood has had to rely on it’s recent successes for respect, you are wrong. Jimeloyo was printed in 1990, before you – as a moderately vehement Glenwood supporter – thought it necessary to chase respect. It’s a funny thing that, that respect is there when you least think it is earned, and conversely, often lost when you think it is most deserved.
The Glenwood part of Jimeloyo is longer than that, you should read it some time. You will have to borrow a copy though, it is out of print and not available any more. It has sections dedicated to Hilton, House (Bishops College), DHS, Glenwood, St Charles and others, even Estcourt.
Now, almost towing time, so time to get some grease under the fingernails ….
@Gungets Tuft: wow, a few big words there. Seriously, I admire College for what they are doing. I am not entirely supportive of what Glenwood are doing, however to even be considered in the same breath as College means Glenwood had improved drastically in 20 years, so much so they are even considered a threat by College. We were once the whipping boys to DHS, that rabble across the road. I am certainly aware sport is not the be all and end all, academics is the key reason the boys are there. That said Glenwood are producing their best results in years with plenty of very average academic boys. It’s easy to get great results with the cream of academics, even harder to get average boys to shine. Something Glenwood is thriving at…
@McCulleys Workshop: tow
@Gungets Tuft: Big word for a two truck operator on a Friday night.
@Grasshopper: Boet, at least some things never change, your consistency is, I suppose, admirable. You asked what College are doing, you got the infrastructure précis. I made it clear that I believe these are anecdotal and that the real renaissance will be the cultural one. Frankly, I am not surprised you didn’t get it, and that’s fine. I resisted telling even half the story because you will read and then see what you want to see. There is a line in a song about a man that “see’s what he wants to see an disregards the rest”. It’s called The Boxer, I think, Simon and Gardunkel, give it a listen.
Roll on, the results will be evident in the progress you see, in the calibre of men College will continue to produce, their success in all spheres, academic, cultural, sport. Speak to me in 5 years when hard work, passion and dedication have shown their results. Until then I will do my best to overlook patriotic myopia.
@Grasshopper: Name one
@HORSEFLY NO.1: well done DHS! The Glenwood 1st side this year is average at best. Watch out in 2 years, haibo!
@McCulleys Workshop: yawn, it is a fact not a penis measuring contest, I’m sure Michaelhouse and Hilton have plenty of hand me down billionaires. Glenwood and College billionaires have earned their money the hard way, from modest beginnings. I intend to be another of those. No seriously, you can’t compare a school that is R200k per annum vs one at R30k per annum, so contest!
Well done to the new prefects of School selected on Tuesday headed by DPHS old boy, Micheal-John du Plessis.
TOP 10 water polo results from today:
1st DHS vs Glenwood- DHS won 13-7
15A- DHS vs Northwood- DHS won 11-1
14A DHS vs College- DHS lost 9-2
Also a very well done to the 11 DHS boys selected for the various KZN water polo teams!!!
@Grasshopper: Yawn, let’s unzip, shhhhlong…Sadly you are going to need more than a generous Mr Clark. Let’s have a compo to name the most famously wealthy old boys, shall we. Ok very few famous, let’s just go for the wealthy list hopper, great life skill, how to get to know the rich and famous.
Glenwood have a magic wand called Ivan Clark, not too sure how much magic it has left though…
@Gungets Tuft: Impressive yes, but I think most schools have similar plans. College is lucky to have the space. All of the big 8 schools have wealthy old boys. I got a list of the Glenwood plans, in a similar league to your list. Again College is not the only school producing young gentlemen. Honestly I wish all the gov schools best of luck with their plans, plenty of competition out there. It’s going to be a dog fight staying alive in the next 25 years. I will be helping Glenwood as much as I can.
@All Black: Many schools have equal history and passion, it needs to be a wand!
@Gungets Tuft: Yep! That’s him. Well done on getting him. Great sportsman.Passionate and has a lot of knowledge in him.It felt like the world had come to an end when it was announced that he was leaving Dale for Selborne in his Std 9 year .Your cricket and hockey has gained immensely!
I’ll be sure to share what I have. I am still in the collating process myself.
@Playa: When we have a pot I am willing to spill the whole plot for a Dale man. I am sure you have some ideas for us.
Michael Smith – the same man I believe, Eastern Cape man.
http://www.maritzburgcollege.org.za/home/news/411-director-of-cricket-appointment
@Gungets Tuft: Very impressive!!! I have hijacked an idea or 2 for my own alma mater, thanks for that GT.
By the way, this Michael Smith wouldnt happen to be a former Border boy who hailed from the Amathole Mountains overlooked by Dale College but ended up at Selborne? Great hockey and cricket player. Playing for Border in both codes (may have made SA hockey – not sure). In fact he was a multi-talented sportsman, also brilliant at rugby and squash. If it’s him, College have done well to secure him.
@Grasshopper: And the funding is mainly from Old Boys, via the College Foundation. It is, as ou Madevu would say, a fair old splodge of wonga, but you have to break some eggs to make an omelette.
In there are also the building of more school and boarder masters accomodation, upgrading facilities etc, but those will nae interest the crowd esor.
@All Black: Ahahha. Believe it or not, my words were penned before I saw your “no magic wand” post. Unfortunately I am in the middle of testing for a new … er .. kofff … dolly wheel system and got distracted for a while.
@Grasshopper: Not a magic wand, while money is nice it is the people that are more important.
Some initiatives:
College have been granted the use of the Harry Gwala stadium for their 1st Team soccer games. It’s a 20,000 seater stadium, and properly used, will turn College soccer into a public exhibition. College are seen as a feeder for Maritzburg United, so College has access to their facilites. The College coach also heads up the MU academy. In addition, College has been granted 2 more soccer fields above the AB Jackson astro, they will bring the College soccer fields to 6.
We are converting the Alan Paton Hall into an airconditioned multisport centre for basketball and other indoor court sports. It will be properly surfaced and be a state of the art centre. The current indoor centre is being converted with articicial turf and will be an indoor facility for cricket and rugby. There is already a fully equipped gym there.
PMB municipality are building a modern tartan athletics facility across Margaret Maytom Drive (the road behind College). This will be available to College for athletics from the first term next year.
A new water-polo coach was appointed earlier this year and the results are already showing with success against Durban schools. College did have a superb coach, a long standing member of staff, but with La Marque leaving he was overwhelmed. We expect to have the services of another superb coach from this term. If things go according to plan we will have a master dedicated to aquatics shortly. I know who I hope for, but we will know shortly.
A new cricket Director, Michael Smith, joined College last term. The results have been instant, except for an unfortunate loss against Affies (ou Wollie …. try again next year) the results have been superb and will only improve further with the indoor facility at our disposal.
Schoolwise we are busy putting in a new IT network which will make the whole school WIFI-able. The next step will be “bring your own device” and a move to a more IT integrated school.
The sporting “houses” have been doubled to 10. This means that intra-school competitions involve double the number of boys. The existing case is that inter-house sport involves too few kids, the same stars dominate every facet with just 5 sporting houses.
On the “boys into men” front, which is the primary purpose of College, internal changes are being made to establish stronger mentorship programs, better life-skills building. If I get my way there will be a much stronger link between Old Boys and school, where “out of school” mentorship, no more on that because you scrubbers will just steal the ideas. Suffice to say that the boys will have access to the Old Boys and what they can offer.
By the beginning of next year, or shortly after that College will have 2 indoor centres, 2 hockey astro’s, a tartan athletics track, a 20,000 seater soccer stadium. The rugby HP centre is physically there, the processes are being implemented to turn that into a science.
If these don’t show immediately on the sports field, so be it. It will show immediately in the lives of the boys, both at school and after they leave. Quality will be measured by those inside the system, but hopefully be evident to those outside.
@Grasshopper: Just old fashioned College gees
@Gungets Tuft: @Grasshopper: No magic wand just, Passion.
@star: You need to use the “reply” button for posts esor. That way it makes the “@All Black” a hyperlink and we can track back on the history of the thread.
Just a value add, I can do more than just tow …
@Gungets Tuft: Yep, Glenwood too has what I call ‘dogdy creep’ unfortunately. No tips from Glenwood at all, very different areas. The parents I know have kids heavily involved with sport and academics. They are impressed with the ethos, history etc but in some sports they feel the school is lagging, probably athletics, rugby and aquatics training. Cricket and Hockey are obviously the schools bread and butter sports with consistently good sides. I would just like to know what this ‘magic wand’ is that College has, maybe a cash injection from a secret billionaire….who knows…I’m not trying to be funny here, it’s a genuine question….
@ All Black- Not what but who. One of your star players comes to mind.
Also I hope that given the current situation our esteemed city fathers see fit to cut the VIP protection costs. After all crime is on the decline( so we are told) and what better way to endorse that situation.( as opposed to enstar Beet ) Sorry back to rugby now.
@star: What is DG?
Sorry. That was aimed at our finance fellow who has claimed that Durban will be bankrupt soon. Just wonder how his mates can drive 11 luxury cars. Sorry. Rugby it is.
@ McCulley’s- consider yourself served
@ All Black- with the current fiasco they can only get worse.
@ Beet/Gungets- on another note how is the Superbru form looking. I would hate to think you were one day wonders
Also Gungets I am not criticising College on the recruitment of players. All schools are in that business. How did the Kearsney U16 become competitive from the worst team in U14? So long as it is balanced and within accepted norms all good. The DG approach is an example of what is not acceptable.
What a sad and dreadful person.
@Grasshopper: Perhaps you can share a few tips with us about schools surviving despite the downfall of the surrounding area?
These parents you mention, are they even slightly involved in the school, do they subscribe to the newsletters, do they visit the web page?
I will put together a missive of the things on the cards, purely sporting, because that seems to be the obsession (and 1 sport in particular, but I suppose it is a rugby blog), but there are also huge changes internally, with a renewed focus on producing the “whole man”. Sportmen are nice, whether or not they go on to represent, but as we know, if we produce a single career sportsman a year, that is good going. However we produce 220 men who need to go on to contribute across society in general.
@Gungets Tuft: you have mentioned a few times about some grand plan at College, I know a few parents with kids there. They are not aware of anything, in fact they think College are behind most of the big schools sporting programmes, still using outdated methods. Anyway, I hope they do have a grand plan as they going to need one with the downfall of the surrounding area. Maybe a 10 foot wall around the grounds..,,
@McCulleys Workshop: You mentioned rates and I got angry again. Does everyone realise that Durbanites pay the highest rates in the country? All because we have a rates base of approx. 4 mill but only 485 000 pay rates. Ok, got that off my chest. Back to rugby.
@beet: Wa ha ha
@star: How is the Westville recruiting going.
In fact, everyone quite coy about new arrivals. Nothing happening between the harbour and Fields Hill?
@McCulleys Workshop: Be careful old Star’s extended family is known to own large chunks of local land and might just own the land on which you live. I wouldn’t want you to have to invoke your squatters rights just to avoid eviction.
@McCulleys Workshop: Goldstones has it’s own gravity, little things like Howick get drawn closer.
Don’t knock Howick, I did primary school there. And it is the Maritzburru Retirement home.
@BOG: Bog I guess the reason is that the squad got selected straight after the GK week and those that did not take part, were not considered.
Paul Roos had one player only (a sub) in the WP squad. We have discussed it on this blog before that Paul Roos should have had more players in the WP GK team. I don’t want to go down that road again but I agree with you in principle!
@beet: I reckon Sun should become a CW selector. He identifies them early and is related to at least half of them.
@Gungets Tuft: Why don’t you just out the facts, you are relocating to Howick where there is a burgeoning population of rates paying individuals driving 1970 240d’s. Much safer for visiting teams and you can ensure no power outages or water shortages – how would you move Goldstones?
@star: No the oppose is definitely “endorsement” not entrapment
@Gungets Tuft: Glad to hear you didn’t offer the heli trip as an option. It would have been a long walk, how do you think Marne got to Glenwood, Harley or horseback?
@star: Waking up from a short slumber boet, and about time. And if you think it is just the two player that will make the difference, best you check out the U16 team that came right through the ranks and lost just 3 matches in the season. Will a new player help, for sure. Is it a forklift upgrade, hahhahhhaaa.
There is a great deal afoot in Sleepy Hollow, watch and wait. All will be revealed, not that I didn’t warn you earlier in the year.
@Grasshopper: That’s not what you want to say, is it?
Put it this way, he is not locked in at night, so he was clearly not kidnapped. For the rest, ask away. My only answer to how he ended up at College is, probably along the N1/N3, by bus.
KZN definitely got stitched badly here. They played crap teams at week, only played one game at 8 am on the main field despite being unbeaten. Had the top points scorer in the tournament ,which counted for nothing. Bader Pretorius is extremely unlucky here but his quality will prove this selection wrong. Dahl is a great player, good cricketer and great chap too. Well done to him. It looks like Hilton have someone to fill Wright’s shoes.
Not a single player from Paul Roos ? In case their supporters are to humble to say it, allow me- Absurd !! Along with Affies and GCB, they were certainly in the top 3-5 in SA. Old aunt SARU again.
Geluk aan Taigh Schoor. 8)
How did Guma end up at College from the Boland? A little cheque book maybe?
What The Puck Is Happening In Charkie Town. You guys not playing cricket anymore?
Some 1st team cricket results:
-21/9 Affies Glenwood:(50 overs) Affies won with 8 wickets?
-22/9 Affies Hilton: (50 overs) Affies won with 8 wickets?
-23/9 Affies Maritzburrow: (50 overs) Affies won with 78 runs?
-24/9 Affies Westville: (20 Overs) Affies won with 6 wickets?
No fuckit boys. If you want to play with the willow and leather ball you guys must leave the weed, beach and babes and start practising. This is run away results and at your home grounds as well!!!
@Ploegskaar: I am delighted to see that Zain Davids has been included in the squad. I’m not too sure why his position is given as lock, seeing that he is a flank. It is also interesting that he was on the bench for WP but none of the other 2 (starting) flanks were selected !!
Regarding your comments about the props: I haven’t seen any of the GK matches and therefore I can’t speak about the quality of the other props at the GK. Perhaps some bloggers can inform us about that. My view is this:
1) The general standard of the props at the GK were perhaps not that good (please note my comments about not being there); or
2) The U/18 selectors at Western Province have seen (other) more talented props available in the province.
@ Beet-surely enstarment is the opposite of entrapment where the young sportsman sees the light ( so to speak) and soars to new heights. I suppose the SA U16 High performance is a good enough place to start.
So College have got a new U16 wing to add to the U15 No8. Definitely keen to keep the rugby flag flying high.
I am aware that this “Elite” squad was selected from players that attended the 2013 GK week, but it is still interesting to note that the two WP props, Adams and Thiart, were selected for the WP GK Team and this “Elite” squad, but were not included in the 2014 WP u18 Elite Squad.
I think this selection is really going to put Matthew Dahl on the map. He still has a lot to prove but being the only player from a big region like KZN to make the squad will carry a lot of weight.
KZN seem to have been unlucky. Their GK results from the first 2 days were good and they should have been paired in one of the final day match-ups that mattered for unofficial seedings. Instead it seemed like they were shafted a bit.
@star: ENSTARMENT meaning : when an up and coming young sportsman or his relatives are somehow connected to a certain Durbanite resulting in that sportsman’s future no longer seems quite as bright as before the association is made and his background casting a bigger shadow than ever before, that sportsman has been enstarred, possibly for life.
Interesting to see the name Massyn appearing on the list. It was surely be Chris Massyn’s younger brother. At 1.92m tall already, he must be quite a prospect.
@Grasshopper: There was a Koenig in the KZN u13 team. His second name is Sven. Must surely be Sven’s son???
The number of KZN reps has doubled. I’ve updated the list.
Good old Sven Koenig, great cricketer. Should have gone further in his career..
Valke does not have a Provincial High Performance program. I am sure they are not the only province without one.
@Amalekite: so was Border but like KZN they played none of the heavy weights,so not a true reflection of strength.
Well done Matt. You have done Hilton proud. Good family genes there. His uncle Sven Koenig was a great all rounder for Hilton in his day. Another uncle was in the great Kearsney side of 1981 as fullback. Maybe I should have paid more interest in the aunt growing up.
@burra: Yeah, and that is from a side that won all 3 of it’s games
Shocked too only to find that one player made it (x_-)
Just one from KZN, 2015 looks bleak!
