10 SA u18 players missing Paul Roos (Bituas) vs Grey College (Cherries) 2024

Update on 10 August 2024:
Due to France u18 withdrawing from the International Series, the SA “A” team will only play one match in the tournament against Georgia u18 on Monday, 12 August. As a result all SA “A” team players will be available to represent their schools on Saturday, 17 August 2024. This means 3 Grey College and 2 Paul Roos players out of the initial 10 will now be available to play in the massive test match on the Markotter.

Paul Roos and Grey College are still on course to compete in a South African schoolboy rugby national championship game on 17 August 2024.

However its worth noting that this 2024 edition is likely to be the most watered down 1st XV match in their interschools history due to 10 key players away on u18 international duty.

Ten players missing!
The best five players from each team will be missing. Therefore one-third of the players who take to the field will be second team PRG Bituas and GCB Cherries regulars.

PAUL ROOS GREY COLLEGE
1 Oliver Reid – green light to play
2 Liam van Wyk – green light to play
7 Riley Norton 5 AJ Meyer – green light to play
8 Reuben Kruger 10 Alzeadon Felix – green light to play
9 Adeeb Borraine 12 Pieter vd Merwe
12 Samuel Badenhorst – green light to play
13 Ethan Adams

Oliver Reid you were an absolutely brilliant captain today. I take my hat off to you Braveheart. Charl Holwill, Badenhorst, Kemp ens was fantasties, maar my persoonlike keuse vir man of the match was tussen Oliver Reid en Altus Rabie. Semper Splendidior.

PRG en Grey het 3 spelers elk uit. Wynberg se belangrikste speler is uit. Boland Landbou moes sonder ‘n baie goeie speler speel verlede week.

The only constant is change. Tye verander.

As ek die span moes voorspel:

    1. Reid
    2. Rabe
    3. Du Plessis
    4. Schoeman
    5. Holwill
    6. Erasmus
    7. Kemp (indien fiks)
    8. Kolbe
    9. De Silva
    10. Dampies
    11. Stoffels
    12. Smith
    13. Badenhorst
    14. Lambrecht
    15. Seymore (indien fiks)

    Paar moontlike veranderinge:

Grey will have their pack at full strength, and they have 9/10 back. They will compensate for 12/13 and play according to their strength.

A big factor will be whether Kemp is fit to play for PRG. Reid is a big one to get back: he’s been ever-present at loosehead for PRG. If Kemp is fit, then PRG’s likely loose-trio will be Erasmus, Kemp and Kolbe – who have all played first team already this year. Also cannot overstate how important Badenhorst is to PRG’s backline. But Boraine is a massive miss, I think.

    Not convinced about this.
Pieter and Ethan have been instrumental in test match wins for Grey College this season. Their undeniable influence will be sorely missed by Grey.

The quality and ability to lift their games of the respective fill-in players for both schools is going to be crucial.

    PLAYERS RELEASED

Hearing rumours that, as France is flying back, the SA A players are being released for the PRG-Grey game. Reid and Badenhorst to PRG, Meyer, Theron, Felix and Van Wyk back to Grey.

    Bituas vs Grey, it seems.

Another player set to miss the big derby is top-rated Grey lock Heinrich Theron who missed CW due to injury. Heinrich will replace injured Tom Barnard (Rondebosch).
The other replacement is Torren February (Wynberg) in for injured Kebotile Maake (KES)

The fields in the Western Cape have had so much rain that it would probably be muddy even if it’s sunny every day until then. Agreed on McLaren – really good player. In difficult conditions, kicking from the base could be really important.

McLaren at 9 is going to be key for Grey. He has to dictate tactically. I would play Ekeji at 13…
It also depends if the field us going to be heavy and muddy…that will favour PRG.
Cosmo needs a big shift, Grey’s loosies must play a tight controlled game, none of that chicken-wing stuff.
GC still has plenty of class…Stockenstroom will show what he’s made of.

As sad as it will be to not see full-strength sides, it does bring a fascinating twist to the game (glass half full).

I have to agree with beet, Grey’s 10-12-13 has been brutal the whole season and will have a massive impact on the day. I will not be surprised if Grey sees the forwards as their biggest chance to topple this great PR-side. Especially without Reid, Norton and Kruger. That will provide Mclaren and Shambreel ample opportunities, especially without Adeep and Samuel to check them.

However should PR’s forward replacements hold their own, it will be advantage to the home team on a heavy pitch and the slow poison could be lethal.

100% agree that the quality of the players coming up from the respective 2nd XV’s may ultimately decide the outcome. I recall in 2018 when both schools went into this last match unbeaten. Paul Roos did not have the depth they have now, meaning Hanru Jacobs and especially that yster JJ Kotze were badly missed.

For the players missing its hard to look past the nucleus of Felix-vd Merwe-Adams as the biggest point scoring threat that has been removed from the big sold out derby.

3 of PRG’s 5 have been injured or unavailable for stretches this year. Boraine missed at least two games (SACS and Stellenberg), Kruger missed a few and Badenhorst missed 3 or 4 games. All of their replacements have been exposed to first team rugby this year. Norton will be a big miss, but it will coincide with Kemp coming back from injury, so can be covered. Loosehead is the only really big issue for PRG.

The “selectors” at saru did Grey a moerse favor by dropping McLaren, Shambreel will go to 10 12 I think Ruben Cilliers who played against Monument at 13,13 I’ll play Ikeje with Kenny at 11,Wan Wyk at 2 is a massive loss ,I believe that he is the finest lineout thrower in schoolboy rugby this year…Coetzee will replace Meyer ….

Very difficult to tell. Olly Reid is a big miss: he has been the only loosehead that has played for PRG all season. Much more depth at tighthead than loosehead. Think there are decent replacements at 7 (Kemp, returning from injury) and 8 (Kolbe, who’s played a few games already). Boraine is a massive miss at 9 – the backups are relatively untested. Will probably see Smith at 12 and Kleyn at 13, or Steenkamp (who played Academy Week too). Suspect Grey won’t miss Felix as much: Schambreel is a fabulous backup. Don’t know what the rest of their depth is like.

Hard to decide who will be impacted most. PRG more impacted in the pack, while Grey will have to shuffle the backline a lot.
Both still have big games against landbou skole this coming weekend and then a week off.
My gut says PRG has a little more depth this year, and home ground advantage. They also do not have to put the sprinklers on this year, Markotter is already slow and soft.
