The first thumbsuck of 2013

With the help of some key matches over Easter, schoolboy rugby followers are starting to get a rough idea of where everyone fits into the big picture.

It was a good weekend for the likes of EG Jansen, Nelspruit, Garsfontein, Gimmies and Maritzburg College. An excellent weekend for Outeniqua and Klofies. And a not so good weekend for Paul Roos and Grey High.

So here is a thumbsuck SBR Top 20 based on the results this year so far.

1. Outeniqua
2. Grey College
3. Klofies
4. Paarl Gim
5. Affies
6. Boishaai
7. Monnas

@Toeskouer: I watched Monnas vs Noord-Kaap. It was a pity the weather didn’t play along but Monnas were clinical in the red zone = 3 tries.

A few weeks before this game I heard that Hans Coetzee has a totally different style of play in mind to that of his predecessor Wynand Moolman. I always enjoyed Monnas at the Kearsney Festival because they brought with them this uncompromising physical edge which was always evident at the breakdown. Now from what I’m told, Monnas will be a team that leaves the bashing behind and focuses a lot more on running into spaces and getting the ball wide. I was also warned about the unique tactical play of the no.8 under Hans and this did not disappoint at MC150th. He did drop back into the pocket a lot. And he is a talented no.8 as well – Wian Jacobs

As Monnas supporters we don’t see a lot of Dale, Rondebosch, Queens, Grey PE, Noord Kaap, Maritzburg College games. So I enjoyed the MC festival a lot. I have a lot of respect for these teams after watching the games over Easter weekend. They played with passion, and as a team together ( not one or two stars who shine). Now I can see where the second group (teams 8/9 up to 20) lies. They are ready to surprise any top dog. I’m glad Monnas came through the tournament with 3 wins because it could easily have been a different result. Noord Kaap really wanted to beat us !! And I think Rondebosch will still surprise a few schools. Dale was very aggressive and did not stop to play. Over the years I’ve seen a lot of the Paarl Bois and Gim, Paul R, Grey C, Boland L , Outiniqua Glenw etc games, so it was good to be part of a different range of schools.
Comparing all, I will tell you Nelspruit/Midb Tek/Garsfontein/ EG Jansen can hold a candle to all of them. Maybe not every year but I always read about schools saying their competition is so hard, between above schools plus Kloof Affies Monnas there are also really very tough games.

@Woltrui: Sien jy hol amok hier.

@Woltrui: yep, maybe he is away still. Not a great start for KES but they will come back, pity they only have 10 games left in the season. They might struggle against Affies and Monnas this year. My beloved Glenwood had a mixed bag, losing a close one to Paul Roos who I think they could have beaten, ran riot against a decent Selborne side and then just outclassed by Paarl Gim. I would have liked them to have played like they did against Selborne but I think it was a bridge too far. The forwards against Gim were just out-sized and out-muscled. We did start with a few second stringers though. Gim will end up top 3 for sure. They have an immense loose trio and centre pairing. Glenwood can be proud of scoring 2 great tries against this great side. Our backs looked scary once they got some ball…

@beet: ” Must watch” in this particular case, could be translated as “maak gatskoon” As you can see, the decline in school rugby in Tshwane (Pretoria ruins) has had a far reaching impact on the followers too. This in fact, has been an ongoing process ever since they capitulated to the British at Vereeniging in 1901 and as clearly illustrated, has become quite critical. If you are in the counselling business, that is the place to be. Did you also read that they have to dig their own graves in “Pretoria”?

@HORSEFLY NO.1: MHS are pretty much an unknown quantity so far , not having been at any of tge festivals. Their forwards actually looked rather decent in their match against Northwood.
Their big challenge this year is that they are playing most of their tough fixtures away from home this year.
They probably won’t be as good as last year , but should give most of the bigger schools a good run for their money.

Yip but it doesn’t seem as if any KZN school has THAT good a tight five. Seems to me that the loose trios are the ones playing real well.
But yeah, if WBHS plays like how they can then its a whole different ball game! Right now I don’t see Glenwood beating College. Westville, I don’t know. I doubt MHS will reach the heights of last year.

@ Amalekite, point taken. Sometimes what makes a player look good is a fact that he plays with so much confidence because he knows that he can always rely on the players he plays with. Don’t get me wrong Tedder is a good player and he’d my starting 10 for Craven Week.

@ Horsy- I think College almost at full strength against Westville at Wartburg and went down 24-19 with an intercept try at the death . I think while MC will always play with 110% heart and commitment ,the jury is still out on whether their tight 5 can lay a good enough platform. This was a problem for them last year as well. I think we all wish them well in their 150th celebrations but it is still early days and lots of hurdles for all teams to overcome. Kearsney v MC at Stott or against Westville on Bowdens. Tough to call and do not forget House with their beast of a pack on the 4th of May. I will try and be their to watch the Old Crocks lower their colours and stand on the field for the very last time.My son does play KES that day so I will be under pressure.

@Sir Pius: You seem a bit confused. Are you sure that you don’t want to change your avatar to KES ?
Tedder and Smith do combine very nicely. The fact is that when he came on in the second half, the game changed dramatically. At that stage Boland looked on top of things and were leading. They must have been shocked at the difference in the way that Kearsney suddenly started to control things, thanks to Tedder. His tactical kicking, line breaks, defence and putting his players into space. Boland did not score a single point in the second half to Kearsney’s 25 or so. That tells a story.
Yes, it is a team game, but sometimes there a certain players that can influence a team’s performance in a big way: Naas Botha, Serge Blanco, Hugo Portas, Dewald Human, to mention a few.
Yes, there should be second team players who can take the step up. However, at this stage, it does not appear that Keasney have got anyone anywhere nearly as good as Tedder at no. 10 for the time being. This may change, and hopefully for them, it does.

@star: Yeah. I think that we got off to a slow start and a tough one at that ! However, our team got stronger as the Festival progressed. I think that the reshuffling of the backline had a lot to do with it. You can expect certain ” first choice ” backline players to be in the seconds. They have all been given their chances, and it is now time to select the guys that are willing to put their bodies on the line. I think that we will have a decent season.

I know you have it as a thumbsuck Top 20 but not sure how you have Maritzburg College above Kearsney (they have already lost 19 -7 to them after being 7-0 up at the Voortrekker Tournament) and no Glenwood who have also already beaten Maritzburg College 21-0 if I am correct. The top two sides this year from KZN will be Kearsney and Glenwood and they have both already played each other with Kearsney coming out tops 26-25. Westville will more than likely come in 3rd.

@ Amalekite I think it’s unfair to say that the Kearsney backline wouldn’t fire without Tristan. Take Tyler Smith out of that backline and tell me what that backline will be like. I personally think that Tristan and Tyler work very well together. Last year Westville played against KES without Marco, I was worried as a KES supporter but when the second team flyhalf started for the injured Marco, you couldn’t tell that he was a second team player. There are boys that are always willing to step up and do the job. Some boys find that shift to the first very easy, they might just not be playing because of favouritism that exists in most schools. Look at Chiefs, they’re still doing well without Sonny Bill. All I’m saying here is that it’s a team effort.

@ Horsy-Do not put words into my mouth. I am just interested in progression hence my question re the future rankings. I have also queried the “easy victory” as 5 front line WBHS players were out and they had a flank playing prop. Just a bit of balance although I am” sure” that School will prevail in what will be a competitive game.
@ Amalekite- I believe in the second half against the Kwaggas Westville had 54% of the possession and the score line was 7 all. They must have been able to gain at least parity in the tight exchanges. They seem to have built on this against Framesby and a winning margin of 44 is nothing to be sniffed at. The margin for Grey was 28 and GW only just beat them at KP. Is this an oversimplification? I honestly believe our tight 5 can stand up with the best and it is just what attitude our backline brings to the table that will determine the outcome.
@ Beet-I was reading the Kearsney program specifically the Old Crocks article and I cannot believe that there was an old bullet playing at the age of 51. He should have been put out to pasture years before

To be honest, I have no idea how good our U15’s are. I know that they had quite a good year last year. Plying at the Paarl festival will also help any team, so let’s wait and see.

BTW anyone welcome to send in contributions for posts. I know you are working on something big in SBR that all the readers would love to read more about.

@beet: The sequel to that other article about school rugby in Tshwane, appeared today under “Planne om skoerugby te red” ( IN PRETORIA) Essentially, it involves outsiders(non teachers) to become coaches. Looking here there are a few potential netball coaches@Tjoppa: No reason for you to suffer the way you are- help is available. Go for a coaching job- the schools in Pretoria needs you

And how are your U15s this year? Star seems to be very sure that they will exact revenge on DHS for the loss last year? I obviously think not and that home advantage will sway it in DHS’s favour.

I think a more indipendent top 20 list such as the FNB top 20?(when it comes out) should be used to avoid conflict of interest etc… i THINK wYNBERG AND sT andrews college are missing from this list.

Yeah true. The KZN selectors will be relishing to see them at trials. What a headache it’ll be for them when picking but at least its a good one!

Did Osborn(prop) repeat a year at WBHS? I think he started out at DHS in 2008???

    @Henkies:
Boys looking good this year. U14A at Glenwood were very impressive leading 31-5 at HT in their only match. In the 2nd half the B team came on and went to sleep and they ended up winning 38-15 against a very good Ben Voster team that went on to smash Northwood by about 40-50 points

As for U15A, they suffered a terrible tragedy but I still think they’ll come out tops in KZN. They have incredible players at prop,flank,8th man, flyhalf,Fullback, centre and wing. They beat a good Transvalia team 17-5. Same Transvalia team only lost 12-8 to a very, very good Helpmekaar side.

As for U16, they also beat Transvalia, a team they lost to last year. Hopefully this means they are going forward rather than backward.

Here’s to a great 2nd term for School!!!

@Henkies: Outeniqua’s weakness is actually their 2 props who are not strong scrummagers. I see them as passengers. They are way too overweight for the modern game. They did not dominate set pieces against any of their opposition.
The loose and the lineouts were pretty even. Grey are very well drilled.
It appeared to me that Outeniqua just wanted it more, in the second half especially. Their number 10 wreaked havoc with his stepping and lightning quick speed. At the end of the day, it boiled down to 2 things:
    1. Pace
    2. Hunger

Waterkloof beat Nelspruit who beat beat Garsfontein, So Nelspruit and Garsfontein could be swapped. Also EG jansen and Nelspruit and Monnas and Kempton park still in race for nu power trophy, that should help the log a lot. It is very close between nr 3 and 10, could swing any way. :-x

Grassy, Beet and anyone else who was at Kearsney,

How did Grey manage in the set piece against Outeniqua where the Outeniqua pack must have had a massive height and weight advantage? Grey’s locks were down as 185 and 189 in height . How did they go in the lineout against locks who were much taller and heavier ? The scrums must have also been interesting ? Did Grey hold up ok or did the weight advantage start taking it’s toll eventually? The scoreline suggests a really even contest so Grey must have some great technique to compete against guys so much bigger than them.

What’s it now? Kearsney will be top 2 but I’m just stating that their toughest opponent might just be College who are also looking good.

As for Tedder, yip, he’s looking real good. Won’t say much more about the #10 jersey than what I’ve already said. Need to look at other contenders. A pity that DHS vs Kearsney will play after the KZN team has been chosen. Willve been great to see Webster against Tedder(both of the same age). I would personally go for Kurt.Tristan to get the jersey next year. That’s it for me on that matter.

@BOG: Bog it gets closer 22-22 now that is not close sir it is spot on BUT the score was 22-20, four tries to two, sixty minutes, good ref. That is how big the difference is. As one blogger wrote here how can the other team be dominating if Grey scored two tries.

@Playa: As Beet correctly points out, you will hardly find two teams closer in strength and the match proved it and so too, I believe, will the next few months. Two points margin which was only gained in the last ten minutes? It does not get any closer, but somehow you think it is justifiable to have several teams between them on the “ranking”. Time will tell!

@BOG: Hahahaha! Really taking this hard hey.At the end of the day,the records will show 22-20 to Outeniqua. It won’t matter how they go against Boishaai and PRG…especially to those who rankings do not matter.

I agree with those calling for Wynberg to be in that thumsuck list. From what I have heard, I think Kearsney should be higher up on that list, in the region of about 10-12.Monnas may be a little flattered by their position there (maybe so is Grey Bloem – sorry BOG).

But ja, its a long season ahead.By the looks of things, things will be very different this year. Some teams really putting their hands up.

@Woltrui: I think the next big event on the horizon is Outeniqua’s trip to Paarl to meet HJS on 13 April and this will give more context. In terms of the game Grey vs Kwaggas game, these two teams were about as equal as equal gets on the day. As logical as it seems going by the result on paper, it’s hard to put one team at 1 and the other at 6 now.

Did HTS really beat Transvalia. I know Transvalia are in the NuPower group with Garsies and Nelspruit – they meet Garsies next. Also Transvalia went thru the Pukke Fest unbeaten.

@kcob: Kearsney definitely the team to beat in KZN.
Tedder is an amazing player. The worry for Kearsney is that if he is unable to play for whatever reason on matchday, they will be rudderless as was the case in the first half against Boland Landbou. The minute he came on, the game changed dramatically. He has to be a dead cert for CW, providing his school don’t decide to send him on a cricket tour again….

@ Far Meadow, I would have to agree with you boet. I watched them play against St Stithians yesterday. That is a quality side and I see them finishing in the Top 15. That backline is deadly. They should easily put 50 points against any opposition this season. They attack and defend very well. The centres run good lines and confuse the opposition. I was impressed with St Andrews as well, don’t write off Pretoria Boys.

Beet, I was getting a little worried concerning your wherabouts. I was beginning to think that they had rolled you up with the beer tent and packed you in some store facility until the next event. Dont bother listening to the moaning minnies here. It explains why poor Affies will be playing a curtain razor to an invitational side on the B-field at Wildeklawer. No reflection on the team, but it does isolate SOME of their supporters, and reading here, understandably so. As you know, I and most OG dont regard ratings too much, but what will happen, eg, if Boishaai or PRG beats Outeniqua by ten and GCB beats them by 20? Go Boishaai and PRG !!!

    Admittedly looking at Wynberg’s results:

50-12 vs St Stithians (at St Stithians)
    60-7 vs St Albans
    36-13 vs St Benedicts

it’s clear they deserve a place in the Top 20

Methinks College vs Kearsney might turn out to be the decider for KZN top honours. College have lots of talent and the kind of heart which I haven’t seen in a while plus a star 8th man along others. Kearsney are the team to beat and are known as far as their strong points go. It’ll also be interesting to see Schramm vs Goodson etc.
Personally I hope for College to take KZN top honors.
Has to do with the “Blue and Gold” and the “Red,Black and White”!
