    Baie spesiaal!

@CHS08: I think comparing Bosch and Steyn are like comparing apples to oranges. They are two very different flyhalfs in what they bring to the game. Where you are right is that Steyn and Winnaar have been better than Bosch up to this point in the season. But you saw what Bosch is capable of at craven week and had he been playing that way the whole season, I don’t think there would be much comparison. I think Steyn’s play can be compared to Tinus De Beers style of play.

@Rugbyfan @Bog @Knight CHS 07: SA Rugby selectors at all levels really irritate me with their selections! Courtney and Morgan are better than Bosch! Bosch is good yes but Morgan is just special! @Mike: We not criticising Grey players Pokomela and Vers deserve to be there infact Jeremy Ward and the Grey captain should be there too however Morgan Steyn is better than Bosch!

@meadows: Andile Phelukwayo has made SA Schools & SA Under19 cricket and hockey I think 2 years in a row now…stand to be corrected……he will surely be Glenwood’s sportsman on the year and win the Derek La Marque trophy. Jonty Rhodes was probably the last to do that in KZN…

@Sir Pius: I’m not sure if anyone has done it since but Pat Lambie captained both the Craven Week and Nuffield sides in 2008. He also played in both in 2007 making the SA Schools rugby be side in both of those years and was certainly in with a chance to make the cricket side in ’08 but missed out.

I think that Errol Stewart from Westville played SA Schools rugby and cricket and Natal schools hockey if my recollection is correct.

@Bog: Moet saamstem!

@star: The 81 KC team is still regarded as one of the best ever for KC. Great all round team with few weaknesses. The tour in 1980 to South America helped a lot of those guys develop a unique team spirit!

@ Kosie- my old man would have been part of the Old Crocks forwards kept busy by Hopkins that day. The Old Crocks went on to break with the traditional KC match to play Westville, Hilton and House. I think it was so he could play and dominate his sons. He actually played against his future son -in -law who was the vice captain of the 1981 KC side . Talk about back to the future stuff. Eventially he and his good mate Robbie Savage were put out to pasture at the age of 50. I think everyone said about bloody time. Good times indeed.

@Grasshopper: Thats correct, 1979 he captained both the SA Schools rugby and waterpolo teams. As far as I know it only happened once before at Glenwood with Mike Madsen captaining the SA Schools cricket and hockey teams in 1968. I wonder whether any other readers can tell us of double (or more) SA schools captains from their schools?

@rugbyfan: I think maybe it’s because Bosch “stepped up” when it counted the most and that was at Craven Week. However he hasn’t been consistent and that maybe another reason why he was moved from no.10 to no.15.

Morgn Steyn on the other hand has been very consistent and accurate with the boot. He is a team player and is capable of handling the pressure. By far the best no.10 I have seen at Schoolboy rugby level.

Courtney “The Wizzard” Winnar has been consistent this season, even though he isn’t alwalys on target (kicking) like Steyn. He has good ball skills and runs into spaces. Did you see him against the Limpopo Blue Bulls at Craven WEEk? Him(Winnar) and Jerry Danquar were a good combination.

@Buffel: You brought back many a fond memory with the names you mentioned. I recall the 1979 game against the Old Crocks at KC with Hopkins almost single handedly keeping the old crocks forwards busy. And the 1980 Springbok team practise held at KC. We were all dissapointed as they only practised a few moves.

They did however have a token scrum against the 1st XV scrum. Good old day’s with good memories

@CHS08: The fly half storey is very interesting I think all the ECape No 10’s have been good this year Bosch/Steyn/Winnaar.

But up until Craven Week Steyn and Winnaar had been a lot better at school level than Bosch, who battled for Grey PE even got moved to No 15 for Grey PE as he was a bit suspect under pressure wonder were they will play him against GCB who will put a lot more pressure on him than what the CW teams did.

@star: Yes he was in the 1979 CW team. He played SA Nuffield cricket during 1979 too. At the time he was rated to be a better cricket player than rugby player if I remember correctly. (We did our basic military training at the same time and place in 1980. He was in just about every sports’ team ).
If I’m not mistaken he was a good water polo player as well.

@ Meadows- Reece Edwards captained the 1979 CW week team with La Marque as his vice captain. Smith was a monster of a centre. I think he still holds the shot put record at NW/Northlands. Very intimidating squaring up to him on the rugby field.

All the bloggers could come up with an alternate side that would give the selected 28 a run for their money and probably beat them. Playing people out of position etc is normally a Sharks senior side ploy but this is ridiculous. There are players that did not make the 55 who should have been a cert. 1. jANTJIES. 2. WARD. and the list goes on.
As one blogger put it, it is a nice to have on the C.V. but in the greater scheme of things not imperative. How many deserved boys from the Free State / Grey didn’t even get to Craven Week. I was expecting them to be the side to beat but were a shadow of the Grey side that has plundered all before them. Slipping through the cracks ,hopefully caught by the scouts from the unions making sure that South African rugby is in a good place.

@Dave41: Grey had two in 2008 in Chuma Faas and Siya Kolisi. That year they only picked an SA Schools side of 22 players after Craven Week. They also picked two B sides (North & South) as well as a side from the Academy Week that incidentally thumped SA Schools when they played each other. Grey HS had at least one other player in the South team as well as a few in the Academy side so arguably if they had picked a squad this size they may have matched this performance.

Of interest is that the SA Schools side that year has produced 3 Springboks – as many as emerged from the North & South sides. The only loose forward who is a Bok is Kolisi. I think that the only other loose forwards playing pro rugby are CJ Stander and Helmut Lehman. This was in a year that Marcel Coetzee didnt even make the Craven Week side

@Dave41: Remarkable indeed. Queens would have 2 players, instead Southdowns has probably their first (of many to come) ever representative.

Some unlucky ommissions, but the side still looks good. Well done to all the boys who made it. Do yourselves and your schools proud!!!

@Babbelas: Ja.

Just hope there will be a 6 flank in the team – and we don’t play with 14.

Jammer daar my maat ek is net so verbaas . Weet ook nie wat is die idee met net 1 No 5 slot , gaan seker 7Flank Cobus Wiese sub as dit nodig is . Hendre se workrate is net so goed , maar wat weet ek.

We saw a few good no.6’s at CW. None of them were chosen for trials. Then none of the 4 players picked out of position at no.6 for trials made it??? Maybe the selectors should have just chosen the specialist no.6s from CW for trials to begin with.

@Woltrui: a big surprise but I think Cobus Wiese will cover 5 now and actually might have been selected as a lock in the end – that’s where he played at CW.

Geluk aan die seuns wat gekies is.

Net weereens , geen GCB First Team speler in die SA skole span??????

-Only one no 5 lock? Such a crucial position. Why not rather one left or right wing-I am sure one of the 3 no 15’s can cover wing (Stassen boitjie extremely unlucky)
-Congrats to especially the Blue Bulls laaities.
    -Generally a good squad IMHO.

Well done to all the boys selected, especially the KZN boys, awesome achievment.

Personally feel there are one or two bad ommisions from this squad, but that is just the way it goes.

    Good Luck to everyone selected
