Jeppe vs KES

The Jeppe – KES derby is one of the best attended schoolboy rugby games in South Africa in any given season. The good news is that the match will be televised live on SuperSport channel SS1 / SS1HD starting at 14h00.

Jeppe must surely be the favourites but at the same time the results achieved by the respective teams over the course of the season points to a close game.

Agree with Playa, first time I’ve personally seen Jeppe not throw everything but the kitchen sink at KES. Opportunities were there to be taken but Jeppe just weren’t on the mark this Saturday. Thought KES played the perfect game plan and will definitely feel that they should of won it right at the end there.
All in all two evenly matched teams gave us a great derby game. Congrats to KES, an exceptional school as always. See you next year!

Easy to forget that in derbies, past results count for vokol. I expected Jeppe to walk this one. Pleasant game to watch. Well done to KES for forcing a draw…Jeppe will be the men licking wounds here.

@Green Hopper: You forgot to add the gatekeepers, game officials, tuck shop assistants, and medical personnel. 5021.352 is on average a better estimation IMHO, if not adding the camera crew, the groundsmen and padre opening the procedures.

@beet: lets take that Calculation a bit further , 1200 students , plus 800 vistors, plus the families fo the 1200 , anothr 1000 , friends and supporters 500 plus visiting families 500 gives an estimate of possibly 4000 – 5000 would be a estimate IMHO , of the crowd size

Morning, there is no ways Glenwood vs DHS gets 10k supporters. I think the record crowd was the College (150 years)vs Glenwood. What a round of rugby at Glenwood yesterday. Was good to see the gap closing between the 2 schools, hope it wasn’t a flash in the pan. No big cricket scores, the Cherries game was going that way. Any way well done Glenwood was a great effort all round.

@Grasshopper: It’s those midday kickoff also ensure that the schoolboy crowds can get to Newlands for the S15 and Currie Cup matches. There’s good value in that too. I have given up my Tank season tickets because I was getting to so few matches it was better to just buy tickets when I could get there. Getting boys to the stadiums to watch those they aspire to has value too. Swings and roundabouts. Most of the time it’s just what you are used to, “different” seldom feels better …

@Gungets Tuft: agree, something special about all the KZN derbies, 3pm kick offs adds to the build up. These Cape midday kick offs lack something for me. Also they not as jacked up on the warcry front, KZN far more practiced at that….but each derby will be special to those with ties to the schools, who know the traditions etc…some of the smallest things like a mascot can be special. For Glenwood Stormin Norman is special…

@beet: Why the obsession with numbers. A full Gilfillan, Meadows, Dixons or Goldstones (put your school field name here), is a beautiful thing. If it puts R500k into the Jess Foord fund even better. Are we really counting?

I think most of the attendance figures at school rugby matches are grossly inflated.

For a big school derby if you have 1200 home school students and 800 visiting school students, they more often than not take up an entire side of the field. That’s just 2000 supporters. In order to get to 10000, a 4 : 1 ratio is then needed.

@Veg: yep, but a Glenwood vs College or Glenwood vs DHS game genuinely gets 10k as Glenwood charges at the gate and can count the takings. 10k is normal for a KZN derby..,

A very exciting climax to this game with KES almost taking it. This is a true big derby and although Jeppe were the better team IMHO they just did not get a handle on the BMT and botched opportunies. KES by comparison made just about everything count for something except their last kick which came agonisingly close (hit the crossbar)

@Grasshopper: In my opinion South Africans are a bit like political parties when estimating the size of crowds.Have been to many 15000 seater stadiums in the UK and even to have 10000 people being able to watch the game you need terraced seating on all sides of the field.I think the actual attendance at these games is a lot lower.

By the way, if Durban is “more about family than money”, then how do you explain your Alma Mater buying kids in grades 10/11/12 at the expense of their existing boys/family?

And as far as pretentious, Botox, Porsche driving goes cape towns southern suburbs are free of those ……..right? Don’t mock those 10ft walls either mate you’ll be building them soon enough, the Karoo isn’t some magic moat that will keep you guys safe as I said you are on the top deck bud. T

@Vin: Jozi grew on me, so I agree with you, its a great place. I like the vibe. Always buzzing, no time to get depressed, not even if you support the Lions.

Like all cities , it has its places to avoid.

I prefer Jozi in summer. In summer, when everything is green and leafy, its a feast.

Would not want to live anywhere else from where I live now though. Endless mountains and the ocean, always green.

Still, ending a hard week with a day and light lunch at Sammy Marks House is hard to beat.

Jozi “rocks” , and in general the people too.

@Roger: boring, I knew you would pipe up. I just not a huge fan of pretentious JHB, with your Botox ladies driving Porsche Cayenne’s, X6’s and Landie Evoque’s shopping at Hyde Park Corner. It’s a culture of money is everything, eating out every night and going to the dam on the weekend with your boat. I prefer the KZN lifestyle, beach and braai, no labels and pretentiousness just down to earth lifestyle. Sorry, I just prefer it and don’t enjoy JHB at all. Life is more about family than money for me…

I live in the Cape and it’s a world better. Before you say Bryanston, Melrose, Sandton etc, it’s a farce living behind Alcatraz like 10ft walls…..

@Matty: The DHS vs Glenwood, Glenwood vs College, Glenwood vs Westville and Hilton vs Michaelhouse all get between 10,000 and 15,000 spectators. I have watched derbies in all the provinces, nothing comes close to a big KZN one…..but that is my biased opinion though…;-)

Sometimes as parents, old boys, coaches and teaches we place far too much pressure on these young men they already are stressed and they don’t need the added pressure, all we can hope for is 36 games played in great spirit and let it be a showcase of sportmanship and comraderie. May the best team win. C’mon the REDS!!!!

I’ve heard that Jeppe are expecting upto 15000 spectators, as far as I am aware the Paarl clash is the most attended, does anyone know what the spectator numbers are for that match?
Really can’t see KES being able to match Jeppe physically tomorrow so they will have to think of alternative means to cross the tryline. Knowing KES they will have done their homework. Expect to see a close and hard fought game tomorrow, as it always is.
It’s a pity that two Jeppe players will be MIA as they have SA trials to attend. Keep an eye out on the big Jeppe wing Nkosi, he can cause some damage even with little or no space.
Very excited to see the clash of Jo’burg’s finest schools, best of luck to KES and Jeppe. Hopefully all we will see is the Black and White.

@Roger: I am reliably informed that the Jeppe boys didn’t exactly get 9 hours beauty sleep the night before that Northwood match. They got properly mugged by a fired up Northwood, who played the best match I have ever seen them play (along with the whupping they gave Hilton). Karrent know whether it was the Jeppe prop or hooker who got a yellow in that match, but something irritated him, he dumped a NW player on his head. Must have been a warm fanta that he drank the night before.

In a way a real pity that Jeppe no.8 Hacjivah Dayimani is at SA Schools trials. The match up between him and Jordan Mills would have been a super one. Both boys looked like go to players while down in PE. Dayimani has amazing pace even for a loosie.

Jeppe were hoping to get him back in time for kickoff but it doesn’t look likely.
