@Queenian: @Buffel: Ward was the best outside centre at the week. The union wise enough to snap him up will make a very good investment.

Reminds me of Nico Lee from Affies. Bulls were recruiting outside Pretoria and Lee was snatched up by the Cheetahs two years ago and now he is in the Currie Cup squad.

Congrats to all the boys who made it and in particular the Eastern Cape boys. Very very proud. Just a note on Mayinje. I think it’s a massive massive achievement for him to make this craven week side in itself. He was a star til u15 and then injured his knee badly in one of the first u16 games. He then didn’t play a single rugby match until this year in his matric year. A truly brilliant come back as far as I’m concerned and a lesson to anyone who has had an injury and wants to continue playing rugby.

2dens ek dink nie iemand hier is n keurder nie so watse gewetens ons as bloggers moet he sal net jy of dalk OLD BOYS weet.

Good luck to all the boys that made the group.
I have seen a lot of talent at the Craven Week in the lock position. But my only concern is that there were not a lot of boys that measured above 195 meters. But if you look at height of the boys on the list, you get about eight that are saying they are over 195 m. No way!

@Buffel: I think the Sharks have recruited local talent more than any other Union – look at the u19 – Majola, Dan Du Preez, JL Du Preez, Schramm, Reece Mchardy, Brad Ellse, Chris LInes, Kelvin Elder, Moloi, Meaker, De la Ray – not bad if you ask me..?

@MikeSt: out of his depth. A great rugby player doesn’t make a good talent scout. Gavin had years of experience and that is invaluable.

All this hype around the big unions. Watch this space.
The Kings are going to make waves in 2015. If they keep a fraction of their Craven Week team and add a few from around the country, they will be a force at u19 level.

A big song and dance was made by the Sharks about keeping home grown talent at home and then they go shopping for every position under the sun. What message does that send out to the local boys- but then they are all doing it.

You must be very proud of him, seems like a solid kid and from the reactions at the Kearsney Rugby Festival, guys were certainly aware of his presence on the field. Looking forward to his progress

@Grasshopper: Don’t think there was any bias involved, but there are two possible points:

    1. Mathematically GW should have more boys in the SA squad as they had 12 representatives in the KZN team. (33% of GW reps were selected and 33% of Kearsney reps were selected)

    2. I stand to be corrected, but I think the selectors made use of performance testing data. It’s no secret that the GW players have superior conditioning to the other KZN schools which would have shown up in the test results.

Personally, I felt the best KZN prop at CW was Thomas – very surprised he was the only KZN prop left out.

So terloops, Durban se klimaat is baie goed vir sulke lang sterk jong manne, so as hy na skool so bietjie wil gap vat, stuur hom gerus. Ek is seker hulle speel ook so bietjie rugby hier iewers so hy sal nie verveeld raak nie

@Djou: As expected nothing make sense while dealing with SARU. They think they can fix everything. The SA team after Craven Week was supposed to be acknowledgement for only that. I think the reason why SARU is not stepping in, to stop the current abortion of professionalism in SBR, is because they see some money making possibilities.
By not picking the best players at CW they are sending a loud message to the boys.”You may have had an excellent tournament but you do not fit in our future plans. Goodbye and have a nice rugby career oversees.” Know of two players who were considering contracts from here and aboard. They say this whole debacle made their decisions much easier. One to the USA and one to France.

@Djou: @beet: It is very strange when a player like Ward from EP gets left out I find it really strange.

@beet: You mention that maybe it is not only taken on CW form which might be the case some of Ward’s play during the year was not great but look at Curwin Bosch his year so far has been quite a shocker even got moved from flyhalf to fullback for Grey PE after some very average play were he was found out under pressure but he’s there which throws that theory out the window.

@Pinotage: For me to restrain myself, in this instance, would be fake. To a point I agree with you, but when you look at the number of Bulls players in the group, given the results, before and during CW, it should raise an eyebrow or two. And with no reflection on the player who was included, how can you justify the inclusion of a “reserve” player? (Mind you, the selectors are probably capable of a lot worse) You may get my e-mail from Beet. I dont need a stream of hate mail from certain quarters, particularly from an OAH in Pretoria or the WC Mafia  But I certainly agree with you about their motivation for the remainder of matches- beginning this Saturday. A pity that GW will not be at full strength

@Pinotage: Trevor Kershaw did say, when interviewed for a Sunday paper (denying that 3 Eastern Cape boys had arrived at Glenwood) that Glenwood might be recruiting in term 3. His statement about the alleged 3 was “they are certainly not here yet”. Interesting to see just how many do arrive, perhaps the story wasn’t wrong, just bad timing?

Who is/was the Glenwood U16A fly half. Hope he is a highly motivated young man, for the right kid it will spark a competition, for many it will do the opposite.

@Beet: Must say I am a bit perplexed. Had they not gone on Craven week alone, a player such as Toerien (and a number of others) should have been there given his outstanding performances in other games. However, had they only considered Craven week, Ward should have been there – and a lot of others not.

One would think the selectors have had enough of an opportunity to gauge the talent on display. The need to choose almost 4 teams for a trial evades me? It is surely disruptive to schools fixtures and it would appear that decisions have already been made judging by some exclusions…perhaps the professional administrators don’t want the party to end…

I watched quite a number of games of the GCB first team so far this year.
I have to say that as a TEAM , they are very good. The coaching staff must be commended.
With regard to individual players, if I have to be brutally honest, it will be difficult to argue for inclusion of any of the players in the SA Schools side.

Having said that, we must not forget that Neil Stannard, Charl Pretorius and Dwayne Wessels were all injured and not at CWeek.

I just have a feeling though that in the remaining schoolgames, the opponents might meet up with some highly motivated GCB boys.

They must be having a terrible season this year?I certainly dont question the ability of the coaching staff of GCB, but certainly the competence of the “selectors”, which of course, will once again, only be seen in 5-6 yrs from now. Perhaps you can list them and give us their rugby CVs. Even a photo if they are not too shy to show their faces.

Miskien weet ek nie genoeg of kyk ek na die games op tv met die verkeerde oog. ak@phat55: A lot of thought went into the selection of the trialists with the proposed game plan in mind. It will look very similar to the U/20 game plan.

It has solid guys up front that will dominate, loosies that can dominate the breakdown, xFactor half backs, solid flyhalves that we know what they will do, exciting centres with solid fullbacks that can attack from broken play.

Remember, these guys will fly the SA flag in 2 years time at the U/20 champs

@Djou: I think Ward’s absence is a strong indication that SAS selection is no longer limited to performances at Craven Week itself as may have been the case 5 or so years ago, when there would have been a huge outcry if a selection as obvious as that of Ward’s had been overlooked. Certainly I agree with you that he has been impressive at CW. Feedback I received on his skills set and form during the season suggested to me that he would not make SAS though and one can only assume that with the advancements in access to information and the establishment of a reliable SBR network, those charged with the decision-making have looked beyond CW.

It’s perhaps something that we should get opinion on – Yes or No: SA Schools selection should be limited to Craven Week form?

@Djou: 100% Djou. A few boys not on this list, perhaps not even at CW will go far in rugby in the years to come. It always happens.

SA Schools and Craven Week is in a sense an end point in itself and the achievements of those who attained that goal should be viewed in that light. Sort of like winning the Heisman trophy or being on the main College Football Bowl winning team in the USA, its an achievement and an honour to be cherished for life but in no way guarantees success in the NFL.

What’s amazing and probably a tribute to their coaching staff is that Grey College is the unbeaten top school in SA but only has 1 rep out of 55 at trials.

The 1 rep is Naas Prinsloo who was at school in Potch last year so he is new at Grey College and just as with the FS team, I think he is the reserve prop. So under slightly different circumstances this could well have been a year when Grey had no reps at all in spite of being the best school team.
