Schools pull the plug on Helpmekaar

THE ISSUE

This notice has been doing the rounds. It mentions that Linden, Randburg and Riebeeckrand High Schools have decided not to play against Helpmekaar in the Golden Lions finals and the contents of a letter are quoted.

THE RESPONSE

It is correct that the rugby organisers and principals of the Linden, Randburg and Riebeeckrand high schools have decided not to play the Golden Lions league final against Helpmekaar. The reasons given in the post are, however, not correct. In the first place the principals never wrote a letter to anyone about the decision, so the quotation provided is false. The rugby organisers wrote a letter to the Golden Lions union to justify the decision and that letter was unfortunately forwarded to Helpmekaar without the permission of the organisers. The reference to the scores in the semi-finals was to the schools who played and lost in the semi-finals, it had no bearing on the finals.

The correct reasons are that the decision was firstly a principled one: The large schools in the Golden Lions union have for some time now refused to play against Helpmekaar, as everyone is of the view that they should play in the macro schools league. They use their numbers as an excuse not to do so, but play all their friendlies against macro schools. This year they played against, inter alia, Affies, Waterkloof, Menlopark and Noord-Kaap. They do not play in the league for large schools like all the other schools do, but only come in when the semi-finals are played. This is unfair as far as the other schools are concerned.

The second reason is one of priority: The schools want to rather have full-strength teams for the Beeld trophy, which starts a week after the final. None of the schools have the depth in players that Helpmekaar has and after last year’s final Linden had four serious injuries which prejudiced them in the first game in the Beeld trophy. Because all the teams are through to the Beeld trophy in any event, whether they win or lose the final, they decided to rather concentrate on the Beeld trophy. If they meet Helpmekaar in the Beeld trophy at some stage, they will obviously play them. None of the schools and/or teams are afraid to play against Helpmekaar. In fact, the view that Linden’s first XV will be very competitive against them and stand a very good chance of beating them.

All the schools want Helpmekaar out of the league and these three schools have decided to take a stance. They are supported by all the other large schools in the Golden Lions union.

@Rugbyman: Thx. Waardeer.

Julle is 100% reg.

@MikeSt: ek wil nooit teen jou gholf speel nie… netnou wen jy my…

I pity them…

Now its time to really shoot the messenger….

@knowthegame: No offence Sir but do you not knowthelanguage? Pulling the plug is a figuritive reference to ending someones plans or activities, also disabling something ( more literally it refers to turning off someones life support thereby terminating their life). In the context of this article it simply means that the other schools have taken an action thereby attempting to end the games vs Helpmekaar. I don’t believe that any reasonable person can read an inference that there is any wrongdoing ( e.g. the bloke on life support ). Maybe you misunderstood?

@Lindenpa: I am sorry, but there is just no way of justifying a decision to pull out of a fixture other than admitting the complete absence of balls in the schools’ sport hierarchy. From the article in Beeld it is clear that the boys and parents were not consulted and have conveyed their severe disappointment at not having the opportunity to play. Seems they were up for it and should have been consulted, they are after all the ones that play the game.

In my opinion the results that you have listed show that there is certainly not a large gap between the 2 schools on the field, but it does point to a huge gap between some people’s ears.

@Ploegskaar: I agree with what you are saying.

However, these fixtures were aranged in 2013, why make it a problem now. Surely it should have been sorted out last year if a stand was to be made.

To cancel now smacks of unsporty behaviour. If the issue was that Helpies should move up, it should have been driven last year. Not now. Or then move them up for next year.

You cannot change the rules halfway through the game or series!

@Ploegskaar: To answer your question: Linden only moved up to the large schools division in 2012. In that year their under 15’s beat Helpmekaar in die final and eventually were crowned as Beeld trophy winners, which was a remarkable achievement in their first year in that division. Last year (2013) three of Linden’s teams played Helpmekaar in die finals. The scores were as follows (Helpmekaar first):

    Under 15 : 29 – 3
    Under 16 : 12 – 25
    First XV : 50 – 32

Linden have had a very good season having only lost to two top schools, Maritzburg College and Wynberg, to my knowledge.

It’s a great achievement, but this feels like bad sportsmanship to me. I could be wrong, but it appears that Linden are trying to protect their impressive record this season by boycotting a game that they are not the favourites. A similar incident was widely spoken about when Affies pulled out of a fixture.

This kind of behaviour is teaching the boys very poor lessons. Losing builds character and is a part of life. If everyone went into the rugby season with this attitude then who would Grey Bloem play against?

@Playa: At this rate schools will only play each other if they both think they have a chance of winning! Great life lessons there for the boys! Wonder what happened to “when the going get’s though” (not the KZN one, he’s chilling in his cabbie monitoring popo frequencies).

Did these schools play Helpmekaar in preceding years, when they were perhaps not as strong? Does anyone have these records at hand to provide clarity? Did Linden’s u/16’s not play them in the finals last year?
