@umbiloburger: Joubert went to the first round of trails but did not make it through to the final trials. He is a good player and if he works on his game has a good future. There are a lot of good loose forwards in the U16 age group so the competition is tough. I also believe a number of the Michaelhouse boys were injured for trials.

@beet: I watch the boy play at the Midlands trials. He’s a decent ball player, carries well and is a factor in line outs, but I think he is too loose for an 8. If he could tighten is approach to tackle ball he would be great. A player like Glover (MC) is the perfect example of 8.

@Vleis: I saw him play against Glenwood and I thought he did rather well but not knowing the u16 age group too well, I really can’t comment on his form relative to that of competitors in his position

@beet: Yep, I didn’t mention his name specifically as I thought we weren’t supposed to mention names? How has he performed this year – I assume that he is injured given that he has not made the final trials?

@Vleis: I’m sure that no.8 you saw is Andre Joubert’s son

@John3175: I defer to your opinion, as I’m sure that you see them play much more often than me. I only watched them last year at the Hilton u15 festival, where House had better individual talent – especially the 8th man.

@Vleis: the Hilton u16a boys are individually stronger, its jet unfortunate they cannot gel as a team! there are too many of them who try impress on the main field rather than making the man next to them look good

@star: Aye, I did sit next to him, and a fine gentleman he is too. I thoroughly enjoy watching sport at House, there is a stately decorum and dignity about the whole day (in the best possible way) … the only time any sort of tribalism emerged was when they brought out the chocolate eclairs …

As House u16A is stronger than Hilton, I find it strange that Hilton have five players in the final trial teams (plus one reserve), while House have none (one reserve). Last year, House had a very good u15A 8th man that was the son of a famous Shark and Natal player. What’s happened to him, as I’d have expected to see him in the mix?

Is anyone following the GK trials aware of 3 boys who are ‘unknown quantities’ – supposedly brought up last week from the Cape and promised places in the Grant Khomo team. I’m sure we would have heard of them by now if they appeared in the squads and nobody knew who they were.

    Amazing how rumors can start.

In all four teams for the final trials it looks like there are only 17 boys with Zulu/Xhosa names. If the selectors have to pick 11 of them it is going to make it very difficult for other boys that are on the edge of selection.

@ Gungets- the grandfather of the House no 8(2012) had to mark old” Pinetree” Meads. You actually sat next to him at that match. To dispel the myth of talent skipping generations at House there are 4 generations of family that played Ist team and made Natal schools. Solid as a rock

@star: Along with the House 2012 captain, who’s grandfather played full back in that AB match, or is that who you were referring to?

    @beet: Eeisch … :oops:

@ Beet- interestingly Van Noordwyk is the grandson of a Natal player who drew with the ABs in the 1960s. Another grandson from that team is one Pat Lambie together with that House no8 you were so infatuated with. What is that old saying about apples and trees?

@Pedantic: JJ was good. He is a huge kid with genuine pace. Apparently he wears a size 17 boot!!!!! KZN need to look after this kid as he is the real deal. The sad fact is that there just aren’t enough talented black players around. I agree with transformation, but this will challenge the selectors this year.

@umbiloburger: How did the U15 JJ go ?
I say Donovan interesting as he was originally a front row, moved to flank and now at 8.

@umbiloburger: So good to hear. I watched Muller play for College against Pretoria Boys High. Seemed like a real go-getter, like a tough little openside flank turned scrummy. I enjoyed his play and later found out that he is actually the son of former Natal and Bok prop Lood Muller.

@Pedantic: I saw most of the trials. Not enough depth. But there was some really good talent, but too few. Muller from College (9)and the youngster Kruger from GW (13) were very good.

@Pedantic: I watched a lot of these trials and there was a lot of talent on display. The PMB and Durban South teams had a lot more cohesion than the other teams because they were basically the College and Glenwood teams. It is not going to be an easy task for the selectors, particularly with a 50 % PD requirement. There were a few stand out players who have gone through and some stiff competition in some positions. Lets see what happens on Tuesday.

@Pedantic: It’s a pity these trials are played concurrently . Would have been good if they staggered games, allowing u16s to play on main field in the morning.
