If you’ve spent any time on that platform, chances are you’re also regular reader of SuperSport Schools Plus – a genuinely professional school sport website that, for the last few years, has delivered top-class coverage through the work of excellent journalists. It’s been a go-to source for fixtures, reports and insight, adding real value to the school sports community.
So like many others, you’ve probably noticed — and felt — the silence. No new articles for over a week, where there was once a steady stream of quality content.
Behind that silence is a difficult reality. There are contributors who have not been paid this year for work they have already done. These are people who depend on this income. It’s a tough situation, and one that casts a shadow over Canal+, who are behind the decision according to this article: https://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadcasting/633770-new-dstv-owner-under-investigation-in-south-africa.html
In late October 2025, shortly after Canal+ completed its takeover of MultiChoice, reports emerged that payments to suppliers were suspended, with a push for as much as a 20% reduction on invoices as part of an aggressive cost-cutting drive.
“An insider at MultiChoice said the company’s procurement head was sitting with hundreds of unpaid invoices from suppliers as a result of the cost-cutting exercise.”
Whatever unfolds next, the hope is that those journalists and contributors are recognised and fairly compensated for their past efforts, and that a viable path forward is found for them to continue producing the content we value so highly—while being remunerated in line with their agreements.
